The area…read moreseemed a bit sketchy and the beach doesn't look like much from the road but I'm really glad we stayed and checked it out. This is one of the more interesting beaches that I've been to. There is some grassy wetland, a small cove, and plenty of beach line. You can explore and find lots of interesting things or you can just sit and listen to the waves. We brought our dog and she really enjoyed it. There were also lots of other people with their dogs there. I can't say for sure what the rules are about your dogs being leashed, but we only saw one dog on leash. Our pup was able to play with some other dogs and enjoy the water. We ended up spending much longer here than we had anticipated because we enjoyed it so much.

Look, I love forests of all shapes and sizes but…read morewhen you get here and get into the Coastal Redwoods... well, that's a forest of an entirely different caliber. Or rather, caliper. These things are huge! There are a lot of sections of this and we got to most of them. We loved the hiking along Prairie Creek(and we did, indeed, see the Elk). We stayed at Elk Prairie Campground which was incredible, dark, and deep into the forest but had a river and bridge nearby for good wandering. Don't sleep on the Ranger programs, we had a good one about fire management that was very enlightening, no pun intended. If you're there at the right time of year, you'll catch the rhododendron in bloom, but there are lots of other flowers and things happening at all times so there's really no bad time to visit. Don't get too stuck on seeing the most famous spots (like The Big Tree) because there's so much to see and some of my favorite areas were the lesser known hikes or just side quests like the nearby Sue-Meg State Park where I got to work on hollowing out a canoe or exploring the coast.

So if you want to avoid slathering sunscreen on, the best bet is lightweight, light colored clothes that have some kind of built in SPF. Our fishing guide, who deserves his own non-5 star review (unless you count amount of marijuana smoked while supposedly working), recommended this place as I was suffering a bit from heat. From the outside, the shop doesn't look like much, but inside - wow. This small and neat shopped is like a fly fishing paradise. As I'm not a fly fisher and also not really knowledgeable about fishing, it was overwhelming. But cool to look around and see all the crazy things people use. Anyway, they had the sun shirt that I was looking for, and I found a nice hat. So overall, cool spot to visit, and great if you're into fly fishing. Parking is easy and they take credit cards too.

Just a few minutes south of Orick, CA is Stone Lagoon, a protected wetlands area nestled next to…read morethe 101 where the Pacific meets the NorCal redwood forests. A nondescript entrance off the 101 leads down to a beautifully empty sandy beach. Rocky outcroppings create a beautiful view, and beachcombers and driftwood hunters can find all sorts of treasures here. A long natural sand spit protects the lagoon (and the aptly named larger Big Lagoon to the south) and at certain times of the year, this is a great place to see all sorts of wading and shore birds, along with ospreys, pinnipeds, and occasionally otters. We enjoyed a little picnic here on the windswept beach, and walked around a little with the kids. We had the place to ourselves... always surprises me as a SoCal kid.

Besides the fact it's walking distance to river and just above the camp site a few miles is the dock and an overlook of the coast.
