This type of fishing isn't available near Livermore but I was aware of the fishery around Redding and was also aware of the Fly Shop because of their worldwide fly fishing travel services. I called and easily booked a guide for a one day float trip on the Sacramento River. We drove up from Livermore and spent the night in Redding and showed up at the Fly Shop the next morning to meet our guide Shane. Although I own enough fly fishing gear myself to stock a small store I didn't want to lug it all on the plane but Shane provided all the gear we needed - rods, reels, flies etc. I asked Shane to focus on my grandson and he was a big help in upgrading my grandson's skills. He hooked numerous rainbow trout and landed a few which were carefully handled and released by Shane. It was a great day - a nice clean drift boat, a skillful and friendly guide, beautiful scenery, and a good lunch. I highly recommend

He said that numerous times with the other person behind the counter that wasn't doing anything, hearing this, but saying nothing throughout the whole process. And after $300, it turns out the lenses are not correct for what I need. They're good glasses, but they don't work properly for my usage. At no point through this did that sales person or the person behind the counter say ,wait , let me find somebody in the store that does know about these glasses to help make an informed decision. What it felt like from this store was , pick something out, pay us and get out. And the smile you say on my face as I left was definitely a misread on your part..

What I believe is most important in a guide, over just catching fish, is Darrin is SAFE and responsible. I trust him to guide on trips across any body of water with the most valuable person in the world to me; my son. That cant be said for all guides. With all of that said...Darrin is suburb at fishing all types of fish species across all types of water. He is patient with new anglers as well as kids. Starting as a new fisherman myself Darrin taught me the skills of Fly Fishing that I have developed over the many years of fishing with him. On top of that Darrin taught my son when he began fly fishing at the age of 12. We have caught more Steelhead, native trout, strippers and bass than I can count. I would highly recommend Darrin for any California, Oregon, Idaho fishing trips. I would not hesitate to contact him for any other trips or states you plan to fish solo or with your family. Darrin I'm happy to be used as a reference for any of your clients. Feel free to have them call me direct.

Their site and cabins are comfortable, clean, and cozy. It's such a treat to have delicious breakfasts and dinners al fresco, under a canopy of tall trees. There are a variety of options for ingredients for your sandwiches on the river and delicious, homemade salsa. Michael and Wanda are great hosts making sure you have everything you need. The rafting equipment is well maintained. Our evenings were topped off sitting around a campfire. Anyone would be fortunate to spend time a couple of days with Redwoods and Rivers.

Our group was age 10 - 64 and everyone survived :-) *** request Chris *** I guess I didn't realize how potentially dangerous it was until a couple of our teenagers fell out of the raft during a rapid.... But they were ok... Only bruises and some scrapes. They would do it all over again.... Falls and all. We went on a Class III tour which included Class I - III rapids. It's sort of "medium adventurous". If you have a lot of younger or older people in your group, you are probably good sticking with a Class I - II tour. But you will be safe during a Class III if you tell your guide that you can't swim, don't want to be thrown from the raft, etc. TIPS: DRINK A LOT OF WATER, show up early, expect to be exhausted the next day, expect to do a little hiking / climbing during lunch, Bring sunscreen, get one of those things that help your sunglasses stay around your neck because you will lose them, wear a visor or a cap under your helmet, bring cash to tip your guide because they do a hell of a job and they only make $100/day. IT'S A LOT OF FUN and the owners are really nice people.

He used his hand-painted lures to tease every possible fish out of our run, while ensuring a wallop of a bite when they hit. We ended up catching (and releasing) 8 nice fish up to 8 pounds - an excellent and exciting day. The fish were leaping out of the water at the hit. Todd was calm and informative, with tips and stories with each passing hot spot. We can't wait to come back for another Steelhead run or perhaps during the summer salmon run.

I brought my 8-year-old son Brandon along for his first real fly fishing adventure, and Jack made it a day we'll both remember forever. From the moment we hit the water, Jack was patient, knowledgeable, and great with my son. The float down the river was absolutely stunning, and the fishing action was steady throughout the day. Jack knew exactly where to go, and we hooked into some beautiful rainbows... 12 strikes and 9 landed, some north of 18 inches. Jack grilled up a hot ribeye steak lunch riverside--seriously next level. It felt more like a gourmet adventure than a fishing trip at times. Spotting wildlife along the river including deer and a bald eagle as we tackled the mild rapids was awesome! I've fished this river from the banks for years, but the float trip really gets you to locations that you can't otherwise access.
