Our group was age 10 - 64 and everyone survived :-) *** request Chris *** I guess I didn't realize how potentially dangerous it was until a couple of our teenagers fell out of the raft during a rapid.... But they were ok... Only bruises and some scrapes. They would do it all over again.... Falls and all. We went on a Class III tour which included Class I - III rapids. It's sort of "medium adventurous". If you have a lot of younger or older people in your group, you are probably good sticking with a Class I - II tour. But you will be safe during a Class III if you tell your guide that you can't swim, don't want to be thrown from the raft, etc. TIPS: DRINK A LOT OF WATER, show up early, expect to be exhausted the next day, expect to do a little hiking / climbing during lunch, Bring sunscreen, get one of those things that help your sunglasses stay around your neck because you will lose them, wear a visor or a cap under your helmet, bring cash to tip your guide because they do a hell of a job and they only make $100/day. My issue is with how I was treated after expressing understandable disappointment over a last-minute cancellation of a Father's Day charter that had significant emotional value and required planning around limited availability. After simply asking whether any alternate guides or solutions were available, I received a response stating they were "extremely disappointed" in me and implying I lacked empathy. As a paying customer, I believe it was reasonable to be disappointed and ask questions. Two things can be true at once: their guide suffered a tragic loss, and their handling of customer communication was unnecessarily defensive and unprofessional. I would have appreciated empathy and professionalism instead of being reprimanded for my reaction.

Went out for a guided trip with Matt Atkins yesterday on lake Shasta. We did the 6 hour trip, and I learned how to fish/ caught fish on 3 different baits that I had never caught fish on before, and my father in law caught his first decent black (spotted) bass. Matt has been fishing Shasta for years and had no trouble putting us on fish even in less than ideal conditions. My grandson and I had previously fished for Steelhead on the Smith River, but had come up empty handed and disillusioned. Todd river fishes 200 days a year, so he has extensive and current information. He used his hand-painted lures to tease every possible fish out of our run, while ensuring a wallop of a bite when they hit. We ended up catching (and releasing) 8 nice fish up to 8 pounds - an excellent and exciting day. The fish were leaping out of the water at the hit. Todd was calm and informative, with tips and stories with each passing hot spot. We can't wait to come back for another Steelhead run or perhaps during the summer salmon run.

Todd was so awesome. I had never caught a fish before and he was so patient and helpful. He's a great teacher to such a rookie and it was worth every penny. The river and views were gorgeous as well. We caught 3 salmon the first day and 8 the second day which is the limit. It was awesome!! I have already booked another day in October with my son and am looking forward to catching more fish. We stayed at the Indian River Lodge (see my Yelp review) and Todd picked us up in the morning there. He provided everything except for our lunch and drinks.
