Time for a pandemic-friendly update. As the general public adapted to our masked new reality, if there was one thing I could count on, it was that the crazies gathered at the post office. For whatever reason it was the post office where I witnessed the most brazen disregard for distancing, sanitizing and, well, just human decency. I feel especially sorry for postal employees, who've weathered this with reasonable calm. I'm going to double-down on my secret, this little nook of a post office in Old Town. I've driven well out of my way to come to this location, particularly during the holidays, because if there were lines, they were short and appropriately spaced. Only one customer allowed inside at a time. Very friendly, even personable help. This is the best location in the city, people, and no, it doesn't quite land five stars.

They perform like many government workers. They need someone to put them on a performance based pay system and light a fire under their A@@. I actually went in their the other day and things were slow, so slow, two of the clerks were bored. I suggested they grab a can of red paint and go out in front and paint the no parking zone as it hasn't seen fresh paint since Benjamin Moore was invented, but then I would expect them to say it wasn't their job, but even their job isn't normally their job, or at least what they do. Many years ago I worked at a USPS Bulk Mail center, and I mean WORKED. We were busy and had to work efficiently but that can't be said for this particular branch. The only positive thing I can say is they have a good assortment of Priority Mail boxes, but then I have my own supply and print my postage at home. I am amazed more people don't print their own postage and avoid the line.

The staff is always kind and helpful. My recent visit involved shipping a non regular-sized package internationally. I was actually recommended by another FedEx office to check USPS rate out as if I were to use FedEx, the only rates they got for me was $300-$400! Well, I'm glad I did! A gentleman working at a counter was so helpful in quoting the rate for me and helping determine the option/shipping speed for me. He even got me all the custom/mailing forms that I needed to accompany my package and even found me a marker and a pen to borrow! Super nice! When it came time to mail things out, another lady at a counter helped me and was very helpful. She made sure to repeat some facts to make sure she got everything right. Best if all, I was able to get thing package shipped for around $70-80 instead of $300-$400! Thank you USPS! One thing though..service can be slow and line can be long especially during the holidays. There were only two cashiers open but they were quick and super friendly! Taking care of business on my lunch break so that I can get back to the grind, so yeah, I was a bit in a hurry. Low and behold, I am my own worst enemy! I left my debit card and id at work. I could see it, there on my desk, taunting me. I called the office an inquired with coworker only to have my thoughts confirmed! Dag-namit! I made my way through the line and decided to play it like I didn't know....I'll use a credit card! It was my turn, the guy helping me was very friendly and efficient! Asked me all the usual suspect questions! Do you need any insurance? Are there any flammable items in the package? (Is that one of them? Perhaps! Ha!) Do you need any stamps today? And then, he gave me my total! I grab my credit card and swipe it quickly through the machine. I accept the total amount due. Then. He asked for my ID! Whomp! I look for it in my wallet (knowing it is not there) and reluctantly tell him that I must have misplaced it. He asks for another form of ID, with a picture on it, which I do not have. He must have saw my distress, because he decided to let me slide! Eureka! He sure did make my day! I love this post office!
