Old Style in a Polish bar.
The S.

Back when I was living in the hood the last original reminants of the overwhelming Polish and Ukranian population could be found in this bar. The bar is a throwback to the day when first or second generation Poles and Ukraines would unwind after a hard days labor. Those days are gone but the bar hasn't changed. It is a simple little bar with Old Style on tap and some packaged liquor to go. Simple and wonderful.

I was having a horrible time at Zentra and decided to ditch for Ola's. I had been wanting to go there for over a year. What would be sweeter than boozing it up at a bar with your name. Ola's did not disappoint we got there around 12:30 on a sat. There were a handful of people. The bottles had prices written right on them and they had every beer I was homesick for. The bartender (not Ola) was on her way to getting drunk herself and was in an ongoing fight with an even drunker Irish man. They ended up hugging and having a smoke on the street while leaving the bar to us. Oh... and I found out that there is a real Ola.... other than me.

You can get a shot of some kind of Eastern European brandy and an Old Style here for $2.50. The bartenders are friendly and the patrons don't seem like they would like to stick a knife in you. Really, there is not much you can ask for. If all this cheap liquor leaves you only wanting more, they also have take out that they sell until 2am.

It's a reasonably-priced busy dive bar in the heart of Chicago. I asked the bartender if she had a beer + shot deal and she said "no, but you can order a beer and shot." And so we did! Noise level is fairly high, thanks to a lively crowd plus a jukebox. They don't normally serve food but I think are fine with customers bringing in your own food, and you can also place an order from a nearby restaurant (I don't recall which one). And yes, it's cash only so bring some money if you don't want to pay ATM fees! 4 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. I like bars that allow customers to bring (or order) their own food - it allows for all diets! The one thing I'd like to see is more beer on tap - even just one good rotating local beer (e.g., Goose Island). Draft beer has smaller environmental footprints compared to bottled or canned.

You can grab you own beer from their refrigerators, however, you'll need to pay and have the bar open them for you. I was impressed by the variety of the selection. Keep in mind it is cash only and swing by for a drink!

Dark, grungy, feeling like a German Octoberfest Pub with beer signs and signed pictures on the walls, I love it. At first we were seated in a small table next to a family who was letting their kids run wild in the restaurant, slamming plates and glasses, so that wasn't going to fly. Asked the host to move us, he said no problem, and we got a much better table away from said family, and it was great, totally changed the experience for the better. Our server was friendly, helpful, talkative, and was prompt with delivering food. I got the Chicken Pot Pie, which wasn't like any other I've had, super creamy, nicely filled with trimmings, light bread crust, and warm to the soul. My girl got a Chicken Sandwich and she liked it as well, a filling lunch and a cozy spot. Love it.

The decor looks historic with dark wood walls, beautiful molding, and of course antique sports memorabilia. It is in Chicago after all!! The menu items that were highlighted was the prime rib, while supplies last and the ribs. I tried to go with the prime rib but at 7:30 it was sold out. The bartenders suggested the French dip sandwich with shaved prime rib but went with the ribs instead. Smoked daily the ribs were tender and moist with a very sweet homemade BBQ sauce. I prefer my sauce on the spicy side but it was delicious, the shrimp were fried and crispy, served with fresh cocktail sauce. I opted for the fries and side salad but were good. The Greek vinaigrette dressing was delicious. The bartender was super engaging and knowledgeable. I hat his signature Ole Fashion and a glass of cab from their list. Both were great You need to eat here!!
