Came here with my friends last night. Bartender (brown hair, long beard) has one of the most aggressively miserable attitudes I've ever encountered. I think he was born with a stick shoved up his ass and has been shoving it further every chance he gets. I was mid-order when he snapped at us, didn't even let me finish my sentence, aggressively told us absolutely not and then just walked away and ignored us. We were going to order 3 glasses of wine and 3 shots but his tantrum started before I could ask for the shots. There was no reason for him to treat us like that, so the stick up his ass is the only explanation. He's clearly not fit to be a bartender if somebody ordering drinks is the biggest inconvenience in his life. Sending him to therapy might be wasted. I think he'd just bring the stick with him. read more

Cool old classic and cluttered dive bar. Innertown Pub is a kind of bar that's hard to find any more. Lots of cheap drinks and cheap decorations all about, with a pool table. Fun just looking around at it. They're cash only. Bars like this are going away. It's more popular to pay too much for mediocre drinks and bad music. This is a classic neighborhood bar located in Ukrainian Village. It's a little better than a dive bar. Too clean even with the clutter on the walls. Has lots of cheap beer. It's about $9 for a strong cocktail. The bar is bigger than it looks, with a few pool tables. Fun neighborhood bar. It's just drinks but you can bring in some food. Female bartender acted rude the whole time I was there and then said "do you know how to use a fucking door" when I was trying to leave at 1:50 AM today. Not saying we all don't get upset when we are closing and people are trying to leave, but in no way have I ever been treated that way before. Smelly dive bar with CHEAP booze and operates via cash money. A non-bank atm is on premises. They don't offer food but also don't mind you bringing your own or receiving deliveries. Sometimes one can find an open-mic night or rando gathering of some kind. (There's a lot of free comedy nights to be found around Chicago at neighborhood dive bars) The best part of this bar is being a douche-free zone, so check your 'tudes and doucheyness at the door. Bar amenities include a single pool table and dart board. Sign-ups occur on a chalkboard on a non-exit door, so throw your name up on the board as soon as you walk in. They also offer a photobooth. Dive bars in Chicago carry this damp, wet sorta smell. Sort of like a rug that stinks up the place but for some reason the owners won't discard it because of fear they will lose their dive bar gold standing. That damp stank gets worse in the Men's room. God forbid should you need to drop a deuce. Each visit tests the most important of swimming skills. (I wonder how their employees deal!) read more

So this had promise. Lord knows, it had promise. To the casual observer it looks like any other corner dive bar.. however, inside it is gargantuan. So, there's definitely that. On the downside, the bartender kept pretending to not see us, and we are hard to miss being the age of most patrons' great grand elders. Now I'm truly not the "sensitive " type. So, I don't know, please don't see this as me grumbling about some perceived slight. I do realize it seems that way. However! You, my fair reader are wrong. I think there were just not the best bartenders and it felt a bit like a fraternity party. I know, I know, that is a plus for many. I myself, hold positive memories of frat parties I have attended in a galaxy far away. Anyway, I shall give the space a 5, but the staff a 3. I shall then average my scores incorrectly to a 3. Innertown Pub is the bar-next-door that we all need in our lives. If you're tired of the wild drinking spots in Wicker Park, head a few blocks south to the quieter residential Thomas Street and look for the corner building with the vintage sign that says "Home to the Arts." Full disclosure: I visited this place on a Sunday night, so I can't speak to how crazy it gets on Fridays and Saturdays. But when I got there it was moderately busy and quiet enough to hear The Avengers playing on the TV. I enjoyed the eclectic, chill atmosphere of the place. Cash only... free pool... free ginger ale... plus, the friendly pub dog wanders around seeking your affection. It seems like Innertown was going for an Elvis Presley theme with its statues of the King everywhere, but then it got high and said, "Hey, this Mona Lisa print is cool too. And this American flag. And this wooden owl collection." Between the mish-mash of decorations and the low fairy lighting, Innertown encapsulates the mellow, no-cares-given vibe that Wicker Park is all about. If you'd rather listen to music than shoot pool, you're in luck too. On Wednesdays Innertown has "New Wave Wednesdays," an all vinyl DJ night that starts at 9 PM. Must be something in the stars that has me visiting multiple dive bars this year! The Innertown Pub reminds me of one of those places that time has forgotten but that is all right. What can be wrong with a bar that looks, smells, sounds and feels like a bar? Cheap drinks, great bartenders, a pool table, really bad bathrooms and enough smoke to smoke a turkey and you know you are in a real dive bar. The Innertown knows what it is and embraces itself! This place is a bit off the beaten path as the cab driver had never heard of it even when I gave him the address. And trying to find a cab when we wanted to leave was impossible. Ended up walking several blocks before we even spotted a cab! I only stayed for a couple of drinks but ended up smelling like the place for the rest of the night! I like to call it Eau of Smoke and Bathroom Deodorizer . Ahh- the beauty of a true dive bar! read more

A dive to the nth degree. We joked that, from the outside, you would think there will be the town drunk sitting inside, not having left the bar since 11AM. Inside, the crowd actually skews young, somewhat professional; generally just normal. The place is covered in random signs, objects, borderline junk. It's a hoarder's paradise, but a bar. My friend took me here after a night of eating/light boozing in Wicker Park. I wouldn't have sought this place out on my own, since I usually run away from hipsters or any signs thereof...but I liked this place a lot! Even the man who checked IDs was friendly. Basically, the whole staff was friendly, as was the overall vibe. It was chill and it didn't seem like everyone was hell-bent on impressing each other in a tacky/disgusting way. I can handle this. My friend and I met some hot hipsters. I don't usually find myself attracted to hipsters, but they were good looking. Also, the drinks were cheap and somewhat strong, the latter explaining why I got just one. Anyway, it was a fun bar. I wouldn't go far out of my way for it, but it's great for winding down a fun night or even spending an entire relaxing night. read more

Just came back from this place. And I really like it. Maybe more than Rainbo, not sure. There are a lot of regulars here whom I recognize and they recognize back which is a nice feelings. Kinda like that one show back in the day where everyone was cheerful and cheered each other, I can't remember the name. The vibe, though subtle on the skin, is unique in each of the three dives that neighbor each other. Inner Town, Rainbo, and the Happy Village. But it was good vibrations tonight, so four stars - bravo! The only thing that would make it epic would be a photo booth... although maybe that would attract unwanted clientele. Hmm. Entering Narnia through a tiny old door on Thomas street- a myriad of visual treats from floor to ceiling- a lot of people-- very unexpected. But...liked. They got billiards, they got lights, they got stained glass, they got a red illuminated giant moose, all maintaining the neighborhood pub atmosphere. If you do not know where this place is at you most likely will never find it unless it is your specific destination. It is off the beaten path just east of Damen on Thomas. I have never even heard of Thomas until last night. This is a true dive - I loved it! Give me a dive any day! There is a lot going on with the decor here you have everything from a moose's head decorated with little Beck's beer bottle lights to old pictures and anything else you can imagine. This place is old and it looks it. Who really cares because the pool table was free, the beer was cheap, the drinks were strong, Sarah the bartender was amazing, and everyone in the crowd there was friendly and approachable. What more can a guy ask for? Thanks to all of the Yelpers who came out to drink and be merry. It was a good time! read more

3.25 stars. While I actually enjoyed my last visit to the Innertown Pub, the foul stench that permeated throughout the space must be addressed. I wish it was simply a patron wearing poisson de mort, but apparently, the cause of this putrid odor is inherent to the edifice. It has been described as "that fart smell" by Jesse S. and as "10 year old tuna that someone threw in the microwave as some kind of sick joke" by Katie H. This might be hard to believe, but BOTH descriptions are accurate. Whatever the case, it stunk to holy hell and eventually accelerated our exit from the bar. Yet, unlike the aforementioned odoriferous aroma of Innertube Pub, the remaining attributes of the bar do not take on fecal qualities. For example, the beer selection here is admirable. While a number of patrons might simply take advantage of the pitchers of PBR, there are also more obscure taps at reasonable prices. The clientele comprises friendly hipsters (to be distinguished from the grand majority of annoyingly unfriendly hipsters) generally enjoying cheap beer, decent tunes, and pool. The artwork and decor are noteworthy (I especially like the owl theme) and the ATM machine spews out your money (a nice touch). Overall, you could do a whole lot worse than this place in the Ukrainian Village. Do I like this place as much as the unique experience known as Nilda's? Hardly. Would I come back to Innertown Pub? Absolutely. Especially if I temporarily lost the sensation of smell. read more

Cool little neighborhood place. Upon first glance it resembled one of those North Woods bars you stop by for a half an hour while snowmobiling. I was looking around for all these "hipsters" I was supposed to be afraid of but I didn't see any! I knew I was in a real old school bar when they didn't take credit cards. They need to get their ATM machine fixed because more than likely the ATM at Happy Village will be broken too. Daniel and I had a good time meeting Yelpy peoples Molly McButter, Jess and Tim, and Joel there. We heard there were other drunken Yelpies there but we did not see them. Hate me all you want but this is what I experienced... Walked in on a cold night and the first thing I noticed was it smelled like piss. Err, excuse me, urine. Urine for quite a surprise when I say that the drinks are made strong because that's all they can do to detract your senses from the obvious- this is the bottom of the barrel. Decor? I think they still have Halloween decorations up.. kinky. I went there a few times culminating on a punk night where there was a lot of pop-punk and punk gangsters. Please pleeez plz don't get me wrong.. if you happen to be close by and want to get hammered, this is the place to do it. I really enjoyed the cellar hatch underneath the back of the bar to the basement: brought thoughts of prohibition-era times to my mind. The whole 2 star thing is that I have regular haunts that are way seedier and as cheap that don't drag me to this part of Chicago. read more

This is the ONLY bar that has not changed drastically (actually, it has not changed at all), since I first set foot in here way, way, way back as a youngster in 1994. That was an era when Sweet Alice was across the street. Sigh. It is hard to believe, but Mike is still there. When he remembers who I am when I come home to Chicago to visit, he gives me a hug and buys me a drink (shot). Thank god this place is still the divey, dirty, sloppy, dark hole that is has always been. Full of artists, riff-raff, drunkards, smack users and a variety of freakazoids. Yay-yay-yay for the falling apart jukebox, the scuffed and mangeled pool tables and the happy memories of hard core drinking with peoples now long gone. The inner town pub, or innertown, or itp is a pretty neat place. first the positives: good cheap beer - berghoff on tap for $3.50/pint good crowd - mostly art school and fixed-gear, some granola and few preps atmosphere - hard to describe, dark, woody, and bustling on a weekend night pool table and jukebox - the most important itp fixtures save the taps the negatives: smokey as a mofo. now dont think I'm some militant anti-smoker, but you can smoke a 5-lb ham in this place before last call. sometimes the pool table scene gets a little pushy. also the table is shit - but since it's free 20+ people put their names on the board each night. read more

This used to be where the Chicago skinhead crowd gathered to talk about people they hated. Now it belongs to the displaced scenesters who stand shoulder-to-shoulder and talk about how the neighborhood used to belong to them. One of the last bastions of cool. This place is pretty great. The booze is cheap, the decor is cool and interesting (note the jumbo american flag with only 48 stars) and the pool is free! We came here last night to close down some birthday celebrations and there was just enough room in the back of the bar for our group to camp out and mingle amonst ourselves in conversation. The bar was pretty cool about letting us order a pizza there (although perhaps we should've just waited... Inner Town got two visits from the Tamale Guy while we were there). Everyone who wanted got to play a couple games of pool (competition level on the table: moderate) and the surroundings and the company were sufficiently stimulating enough to keep us all entertained for a few hours. I've been going to this place since approximately before I was born. This is where I played my first open mic "sorry, here's my next song, sorry, it'll be over soon, sorry don't worry sorry" when the bartender poured me a shot of Jack to ease my shaky nerves. These days, it's still one of the best open mics in town; you can hide behind the clamor of the pool table and the haze of the free performer's drink, but it's awfully hard for even a cowboy to not make a friend on stage. I believe this bar's perseverance owes itself chiefly to a single man, the owner Mike. Though he's rarely present, his presence is always felt in his decor, shamrocks tacked on top of scarecrows and valentines and santa clause sleighs, red white and blue stickers, dingy old paintings. Uppity new neighbors trying to remake the neighborhood in their own image have been trying to shut this place down, but Mike always wins. This bar keeps pulling back the Ukranian Village expatriates long after they've gotten gentrified out of their own neighborhood. Not a bad song on the juke, if you like raw, organic, dixieland, old country. Last time I stopped by, they had Bitches Brew on the juke box. I know this makes me a jerk, but I like to stretch my dollar as long as it can go, across a three songs and 45 minutes of Miles Davis' self-indulgence. The new neighbors come and go, but the same damn lot of bartenders and barflies keep on coming back, every day since forever. And that's most definitely a good thing. read more

I love a proper dive. This is a place that I can choose on any night of the week and know that I'll find balance. By balance, I mean that I'll either stay social enough to talk too much to drink too quickly, or that I realize that I might as well just go to bed and get ready for tomorrow. Sometimes I can't handle the smell, but I can't put my finger on what the cause is. One time, some girl that should've been hanging out near State and Rush had tried blaming the smell on the food that I was holding. I told her that the smell was actually her face and that it'd be in everyones' best interest if she left. Sometimes I just assume that some hipster spent too much time with some Crusties and forgot about soap. For whatever reason though, I usually will have a tough time not having a fun time at the ol' ITP. read more
