Of the three places we've tried so far in Hilo, this is our favorite. We ordered the curry fries to start. My wife ordered a flight of ciders and I ordered an Ola draft (I think it was a lager). We then ordered all four Bao buns, a house salad with shrimp, and the O La Burger. My beer was good but my wife couldn't stop talking about how good the dragon fruit cider was so she ordered a full sized glass. The curry fries were out of this world awesome! We tore into the fries and they were gone in less than two minutes. My kids ate the Bao buns and said they were delicious. My wife loved the salad with shrimp. The shrimp were perfect. Not over battered, not under battered, and not overcooked. I had the burger. DAMN. It was the bomb! I ate half and then started letting everyone else have a bite. It was the best burger I have had in a decade. Actually, I can't remember having a better burger. It was a very clean restaurant with very good service. I wish I had time to go there again. read more

Huge fan of Ola Brew. I discovered it in December and always look for a reason to go back. I've enjoyed everything I've had both food and beverage. Bao, burgers, curry fries. Great time at Ola Brew in Hilo!! Stopped here after driving up from the south coast and was MOT disappointed after the drive! We came on a Saturday around 3 and sat down at the bar immediately. Fantastic drinks and food! My husband and I stumbled upon this place while spending the day in Hilo. He loved the Orange Vanilla seltzer, and I favored it the Tangelo hard cider. My friends and I came here on a Thursday night and it was surprisingly packed. I was visiting from Honolulu and my friends live in Hilo and one of them would come to Ola often ever since they opened. We waited a little while to get seated and I was very excited to order. We ordered food and drinks and my friend had asked for no sauce on her burger. When we got our food and drinks, we realized they had put sauce on her burger even with her asking for no sauce. This was fine because mistakes happen of course, but it was extremely difficult to get the servers attention to ask them to fix this. It took 20 minutes to finally get their attention. They did not seem very happy about this and when they finally returned a new burger with no sauce, they put it down a bit aggressively. We all kind of looked at each other and my other friend who is was a regular here said that this was quite out of the ordinary but she would usually only come for drinks. Either way, I think their entrees taste good but are severely overpriced. Might just be a place for drinks and appetizers. read more

Fav new place in Hilo, becoming a weekly staple. Big fan of their mushroom tacos, fries and miso Caesar. Fun and friendly staff, nice vibes inside. Only drawback for me is it's freezing inside, so bring a sweater if you don't love fridge grade AC. read more

Overall good place for drinks and food. We were seated quickly with water and menus. Our initial drink and pupu order was also taken quickly. Food arrived not long after we ordered. We got the lechon and crispy tako, both were very tasty and cooked well, not over cooked which can be easy to do with tako. The only downside being we went there for dinner and it took a while for our server to come back to take our dinner order and a get a second round of drinks. But this is definitely a must try place. read more

I'm really, really glad we finally have a spot that takes their food seriously in town. We've been needing this for a long time. So many local spots overprice mediocre food because they know they can draw in tourists, and it's frustrating as someone who lives here and wants to have a nice restaurant experience! The menu is thoughtful, changes fairly often, and reflects local ingredients and traditions while still integrating modern trends and innovative flavor combinations. Above all else... the burger is reliably superb. You'd be surprised how hard it is to get a good burger in Hilo. The following is a little food review: Burger: 9/10. Very well executed smashed style burger, would be nice to see some options like a fried egg or kimchi Bao buns: 7.5/10. Obviously they vary because there are options, but generally speaking they were rather dry and could use more sauce/juicier meats to counterbalance Loaded fries (I've tried a couple versions): 8.5/10. Solid option. I appreciate that they switch it up seasonally. Cauliflower: 7/10. I can't deny that it's delicious, but the massive amount of hot fish sauce made our whole table and all the tables around us smell like feet. The table next to us kept sniffing the air and asking each other to check the bottoms of their shoes. I'm going to try the vegan option next time... I know personally that fish sauce just has this effect, it is what it is, and the taste of the cauliflower was on point... but you really have to take the whole customer experience into account and food that smells... uh, polarizing, sometimes needs editing. Lechon: 9.5/10. YUM. And what a generous serving!!! The texture is so good- skin is crispy, interior is juicy and porky, and the garnishes and toppings perfectly accent the pork belly. Without enough acidity to balance, fried pork belly can be really heavy, but they nailed this one. Kalbi Meatballs: 8.5/10. Presentation is great, flavors mix well, wish there was one or two more meatballs for the price. Dan Dan Gnocchi: 3/10. You can't win 'em all. This was the first dish I've had in a restaurant in years that I barely touched... I tried to like it. Nobody else at the table wanted it either. The Dan Dan sauce itself along with the ground meat and peanuts was good, I ate a few spoonfuls of it on its own and it would've been great with some buckwheat noodles or something. The most common adjective used to describe good gnocchi is "pillowy"... these gnocchi were more "sandbaggy". Granted Parisienne gnocchi are slightly different that traditional gnocchi di patate, but they're still supposed to be pillowy. It's like the chef thought the pillowy gnocchi were too hard to handle or something so instead they added potato starch until they got a modeling clay consistency, and then just served it without tasting it. I used the word "heinous" at the time of eating to describe the gnocchi themselves and I stand by that unfortunately. Fried rice: 8/10. Classic combo, well executed, great plate. Would've been nice to see a little creativity in the ingredients for the price, but I can't deny the comfort in familiarity with their fried rice. I won't do a detailed breakdown of the beer/seltzer/cider menu, but I always enjoy getting a flight. It would be nice to see more diversity in the beer lineup... the IPAs mostly taste the same. For a tasting room, the beer offerings are somewhat limited. The seltzer and cider lineup are great though, nice and diverse and a lot to choose from. Hey ola brew, if you ever want to talk about your food shoot me a message! I'm a bread baker, not a line chef but I love food and menu development! Forgot to add: some other reviews have noted issues with the service, and I hate to say it but... it could use some improvement. We had like, 4 different servers and none of them seemed particularly interested in our customer experience. Also, I HATE iPad based restaurant interfaces. They feel very unprofessional, they're tedious and take a lot longer than an old school order pad, and it makes me feel like I'm at either an Apple store or a fast food restaurant. It's not hard to find wait staff with aloha in Hilo... it might be time for a job fair! read more

Chanced upon this gem on their Grand Opening and will be back as often as we can. Solid selection of beers , hard ciders, hard teas and hard seltzer on tap and in cans. Incredibly attentive and engaging staff who knew a lot about how the in-house beers/ciders are made with local ingredients whenever possible and top of the line imports when not (Yakima, WA hops and Wenatchee, WA apples). Food menu is eclectic and inspired. Bao buns are very good and visually appealing. We tried both the walnut shrimp and pork belly versions. Kale Caesar salad was killer, as were the JerK Chicken Wings. Well worth the trip. read more

I normally enjoy my time at Ola Brew. The service I received last night, however, was less than enjoyable. The tall curly haired brunette who was serving our table was not personable at all, and in fact was very rude. I ordered two drinks on the first round, one of which never even made it to the table on a night that was not busy at all. Later I ordered a Pork Bao Bun, which took 35-40 minutes to get to the table (longer than it should have). When I asked our waitress if my food was on it's way out soon, she didn't hear me well, and made a rude face trying to discern what I said. I repeated the question which was met with more disgust from her. To make matters worse, our waitress did not even alert us of last call for food and drinks and it ended up being too late. Once again, I love Ola Brew and I have nothing but respect for the employees. What is so sad, however, is that this is not the first time I received bad service from this same waitress and the same goes for friends of mine who have been served by her in the past. Us 3 sisters had the beer flights and shared crispy tako, kalbi hamburger balls, and deep fried pork belly. The beer was chilled perfectly and fun to try, and the shares were onolicious. Our friendly waiter, Zac ( with the blue eyes), was spot on in his beer suggestions and checked on us often. For dessert we shared the deep fried bao, dusted with sugar, alongside a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was sooo delicious, great ending to a great meal! read more

My partner and I came here for lunch and ordered the octopus, pork belly boa bun and the ola burger. The pork belly and octopus were dry, the burger was good but the service was very poor. It took us 30 mins to get served and well and truly after finishing our food and drink we waited and waited until my partner had to approach the gentlemen at the door to ask for the bill. The guy at the door was lovely but unfortunately the service when actually seated was severely lacking, potentially need more staff on or staff dedicated to certain tables. read more
