I have spent the last 3 and a half years searching throughout Ann Arbor and metro Detroit for a good tailor. That search is finally over. Before moving back to the midwest, my local tailor was a man who trained in Milan and spent 50 years in the business. He was perhaps best known for making John Kerry's bespoke suits (and if you've ever seen photos of John Kerry, you know those suits fit his body wonderfully). Getting clothes tailored from him was like a high--and I've been chasing that high all over the region for the last few years. So after being dissatisfied at 4 other tailors in the area, I gave Ojen a shot. I had somehow gotten my hands on an obscenely nice (and expensive) coat, and needed a few nips and tucks here and there. Nothing was necessarily complicated, but the unique construction of the coat meant it needed a gentle hand, particularly around the sleeve buttons, to avoid scarring. The coat of course turned out perfect (hence the rating), but a few other aspects of the experience are notable. Ojen and her co-worker explained every decision to me and walked through exactly what they would do to the coat. They communicated great via text, and also had me try on the coat a couple times throughout the process to make sure the fit was exactly right. They also under-promised and over-delivered on the timeline. While it was not cheap, it was certainly comparable to the other highly-rated tailors in the region. In my experience, Ojen is the best in Ann Arbor, and certainly worth a visit. read more

Krista is amazing! I've brought several of my clothes to her for altering or other adjustments (e.g. fixing a broken zipper). She is always super quick and does an amazing job. Most impressively, I brought my wedding dress to her a few months ago to remove the tail and make it tea-length, and she did an amazing job (especially given how much fabric there was). I enjoy the quality of her work. She does an excellent job and really takes the time to make sure the piece doesn't "look repaired". I've had them repair two pieces. The first they took out and replaced a broken zipper that extended all the way down the dress and the second they replaced the tie on my son's hat. She really took some time with me to pick out another zipper from her "collection" that I liked and that she felt would match the fabric style. I have a love/hate feeling about the location of the shop. This place is hard to find in the basement of Bivouac and because, it is in the basement and there is no elevator...this place is not handicap friendly or stroller friendly and yet it is right down from Comet Coffee so I have a good excuse to stop in for my favorite coffee drink. read more

I would strongly advise Michigan students to stay away from Ojen's. Although her location is convenient and nicely tucked away in the basement of Bivouac, her prices are criminal for the quality of work that she delivers. As a college student, I was confused when my clothes ended up looking terrible after paying $30 to have a shirt hemmed. Ojen defended her work and attempted to explain that she had tailored my shirts to specification, and I initially trusted her as she was the expert. However, it quickly became apparent after three shirts that the hemlines that she was produced were blatantly uneven, and it was then that I realized she had been taking me for a sloppy, expensive ride. When I brought my shirts back to Ojen and asked for her to redo the hems, she said that she would have to charge me an additional $30 a shirt. I found this outrageous considering the quality of her first attempt and brought my clothes to a tailor right down the street. They fixed the hems for $10 a shirt and got them back to me in less than half the time Ojen did. I was unwise in repeatedly bringing my clothes to Ojen, even when she had messed up previous pieces. I'm writing this review in the hopes of warning others that Ojen is not to be trusted as a tailor. read more

I was a little confused about this place because I didn't realize it was inside of Biovac. Who woulda thunk it? Located down in the basement in the southwest corner is an adorably cute lady who does very nice alterations. I took a pair of Joe's Jeans here and had them altered such that the original hem stayed on. This is pricier ($27) whereas you could have them do a normal hem where they just cut and fold it up for $13, I think. I thought it was worth it because I got the jeans so cheap ($4 at St. Vincent DePaul Thrift, see review). Now, this was my first time getting a pair of jeans altered, so I wasn't sure exactly how to decide how short or long to make them, but Ojen knows what she's doing; her advice was spot on and she did a great job with my jeans. read more

I really really like this place! Ojen really cares about doing the job right. When I needed my pants hemmed, she asked what type of shoe will I most likely be wearing with it. I said probably a boot of some sort. At the time I was wearing converse, so she immediately slipped off her own boot so that I could wear it during the hemming process, in order to get the right estimate of height and length. She said she will never go short and always be a pinch longer to be on the safe side. I found her because I needed my pants hemmed about 4 inches, but then I also found out she fixes those holes you get over time in your thigh area. So I had her do 3 products in total. The price might be too high for some, but I would rather pay that price then throw away a loved pair of jeans. She also does texting so you can message her anytime and check up on your pants or if you have any additional questions. Her shop is hard to find at first. You have to find Bivouac on State st and actually go in the store and find the stairs down. read more

I went to Ojen a few years ago and I will never go back... Like a previous reviewer, I had never gotten jeans altered. I knew what I wanted though. Ojen had a different opinion of what i should do. I tried to explain to her what i liked... apparently she didn't think that was right. When i got the 2 pair of jeans back they were tailored how Ojen likes them. I was furious. It was really just the difference of maybe a half inch but that made all the difference to me. My jeans ended up dragging in the back and wearing out much faster than they would have. This place is bit hard to find in the basement of Bivouac. When I first walked in, I had no idea where I was supposed to go until a Bivouac sales associate noticed how lost I looked and directed me to Ojen's. I had two pairs of jeans hemmed here, not hard to mess up. The job was done fine, nothing special. Ojen does leave a little to be desired in terms of customer service, though. While I understand that this is her field and she's been doing it for years, she can come off as a bit condescending, and for that reason I'm not sure I would return. read more

Ojen is a wonder woman. I came to her desperately needing a fixed zipper on down coat. Rather than quoting me $50 for a 1 week repair (not possible at the end of February....it's freezing.), she honestly told me that she would try her best but not risk opening a down coat. I found this place because I'm a frequenter of Bivouac. I primarily went in because I needed a stitch on pair of gloves, but I figured I might as well bring my mangled pair of jeans with me just to see if there was something that they could do. For starters, they fixed my glove in 2 minutes while I was standing there. Cool. The cause for my glowing review is their approach to my jeans. I had been stepping on the hems on these jeans for months, so much so that finally the hems gave way completely and were hanging from my pants leg. I thought I was going to have trash them...until I met Ojen's. They embraced this challenge full on. Basically I left my jeans with them for a few weeks, while they waited for the perfect hem match to walk through their door. When it did, they gave me a call, we looked at them together, and they performed serious surgery on my jeans, being mindful of every detail from length to the stitch color. I could not believe it when I picked my jeans up. They looked brand new. Now, the whole process took time (3-4 weeks), but this was no ordinary job. They brought my jeans back to life. On top of it all, they were SUPER friendly and cool throughout the process. Coming from NY, I'm used to tailors being surly and dismissive. To the contrary, these ladies were just awesome and a pleasure to do business with. read more

We took a suit to Ojen's for tailoring, and she did a fantastic job! She went the extra mile and sewed in some remnant fabric inside the pant hems to get as much length as she could out of them. Magically, she made a 32x32 long enough for a guy who's 6'4". She didn't over-alter the jacket either, and even asked us if we were sure we needed to do anything to it/spend the money. But we wanted it slimmer and she made it happen. She's very nice, friendly, funny, and the prices were very reasonable. I will take all future alterations to her. read more

My zipper from my leather jacket broke and I asked them how long it would take to fix it. After examining it carefully, they told me that the whole zipper would have to be replaced and that it would take until Wednesday (It was Friday). I checked inside Bivouac next door and they had an alterations store in their basement. It is pretty hidden but there is a really nice lady there and after showing her the jacket, she just slid it inside in 2 seconds. She didn't even have to use a tool or fix anything. She fixed it and added a stopper for free. Please avoid A-1 Alterations, there is a lot better service next door "Ojen's State Street Alterations". PS: The reason why I leave this review is because the lady did it for free and saved me a lot of time and money. So I wanted to thank her. read more

Ojen and Christ do a great job. I have a much smaller waist than hips, and almost always need to get the waist taken in on pants. They are a little expensive but they do a *beautiful* job, especially with difficult alterations. They are also very good with hemming jeans with the original hem. I have been going to Ojen for several years now and cannot recommend her more highly. She and Krista (sp?) are top-notch professionals who take the greatest care with whatever you bring to them. She's hemmed pants for me; fixed buttons; Krista has measured me for a custom-made suit, and most recently Ojen and Krista worked tirelessly to make alterations to this suit I purchased from Indochino for a wedding. I'm not the easiest fit, but Ojen and Krista were attentive to every detail throughout the process, even talking with Indochino on the phone to help them understand what alterations needed to be made, so I could get reimbursement for these alterations. The suit is now a perfect fit and it's all because Ojen and Krista knew what they were doing. On top of this, they are great people, kind, though direct, and clear about the scope of what they need to do. I've always found them helpful, reasonable, and excellent at their work. I will likely be leaving Ann Arbor in the next year or so, but I look forward to coming back to Ann Arbor to have Ojen take care of me in the future. Yes; she's worth the trip. read more

I'm new to the are, so I went to them based on the reviews I read and I was not disappointed! They advised me that they could tailor my suit, but it would be much more expensive and the end result would not be nearly as good as if I returned the suit and bought a different size. Upon my return with the new size, we were both pleased with the result and there was no need to tailor the suit. Their decision to give me this advice was very much appreciated, especially acknowledging that it cost them business: but it was in the customer's best interest. I did ultimately need to have a shirt altered and it was altered and in excellent form after 2 business days. I agree with the previous review that this is certainly the best advice I could've asked for, not to mention the quality of the alteration and the experience that they provided.
