Don't ever go here. This place is an absolute scam. Paid 85$ for an alteration where they barely did anything, didn't do what I asked, and they didn't do it in time. Originally my things were supposed to be done on Saturday. Not even an hour later I called to ask if I could change that to Thursday where the man told me it would be no problem. Went to go get my things on Thursday and he told me that wasn't right because he hadn't changed my slip and they wouldn't be done till Saturday. So unprofessional and extremely overpriced. I never write reviews, but I think this place deserves an exception. Terrible quality of work, you can tell everything was done with zero effort. Sent off two pants for the simplest alterations--hemming. The hems on both pairs were twisted to where the pants no longer sit right. One of the pants even has different lengths between both legs. This is the absolute simplest alteration that was somehow botched. I also brought in a $1700 Herno jacket to get the sleeves shortened. The owner was confident he would be able to shorten the sleeves. I come to pick up the jacket and it looks worse than before I brought it in. The work on both sleeves was uneven, the stitching was crooked, and the worst part is, because the material was cut, I can't even go to another tailor to fix his mistake. This jacket was irreparably botched. I brought in 3 items--two pairs of pants and a jacket--NONE of the pieces were altered correctly. Your clothes are better off not coming here. Whatever you do, don't go here. As several other reviewers have written, the store owner has an unprofessional manner. I came in to get a handful of dresses, pants, and a blazer tailored. He berated me asking "why I had bought pants if they didn't fit." I replied, "Because I could get them tailored?" To which he said, "Too much work. You should have just returned." I asked if he could fix them and he said "Yes, but too much work." Ultimately he obliged, and - despite my reservations - I left my items with him to mend. Just picked them up today and he did a god awful job on almost everything. I brought in a Missoni dress (that I love!) to have hemmed - he hemmed it WAYYYYY too short such that I can barely wear it without my butt showing. (Honestly, I don't really think I can appropriately wear it at all.) I will bring to another tailor to see if they can let out his seam. Another dress I had hemmed, his hem was so poor that already before I tried it on there were loose threads and snags. I brought in a blazer for him to take in the arms. The arms are uneven, such that one hits at my wrist, and the other mid-hand. Again, I will need to bring them to someone else to get fixed. Beyond frustrated. Poor service - a red flag. I should have trusted my gut, but figured - how complicated can it be? It wasn't like I was having a wedding dress tailored, I was simply having a few things hemmed for length. This was my first time getting clothes tailored and it certainly won't be my last. I had a very good experience with A-1 and will certainly be back with lots more clothes as well as recommending this tailor to friends and family. I am petite with wide hips but a small waist and often clothes I buy off the rack have weird fits, so I finally took the chance and took some of the worst fitting pants to the tailor. Getting them back is like having a whole new piece of clothing! I'm not sure I've ever had pants fit so well! The tailor did a wonderful job for me measuring and making the appropriate adjustments. I am very pleased! I also took a suit in to be altered: pants taken in and hemmed and blazer taken in and sleeves shortened. It's like a whole new suit! Best tailor in Ann Arbor. There's a reason why he has a prominent location in Nickels Arcade: he gets lots of traffic, respect, and customers who consistently return. All the times that I have been there, I have been greeted and treated with respect, so I am unsure of all the 1-star ratings. Perhaps you caught him on a bad day? It happens to the best of us. Here are just a few things that I really admire about this business: 1. He does rush repairs/alterations, sometimes even same-day and next-day based on your needs. 2. He is very honest. He has told me and I have witnessed him telling other customers when their clothing indeed fits fine, or cheaper alternatives rather than getting alterations done. I've had a pair of jeans hemmed and a pair of jeans patched up by A-1, and they did a good job. Honestly, hemming a pair of jeans, even pricey Japanese selvedge stuff that I like, isn't hard work, so I can't really speak to their magical abilities. However, I had to get the pair re-hemmed because they were about an inch too long the first time. Whether that was due to the tailors decisions or our discussion during the measurement, I can't say. I was charged $10 for the re-hemming, however, which was a bit irksome, I would have appreciated/expected a discount on that. The patch job was on some roughed up older jeans I've essentially worn out, but didn't want to get rid of. The job was done well enough, but wasn't miraculous or anything. I'd certainly suggest taking your garments to them and seeing what they can do for you! For me, they did the job I asked and nothing more, which earns 3 stars in my book. Updated review: I've taken a few more things there for alteration and repair. They owner is nice and does a professional and fast job. I've had pants hemmed by A-1 Alterations and have been satisfied with the results. However, I took a dress in to be hemmed and the results were very poor. One side of the dress was clearly shorter and they didn't want to fix it. They said, "It's not noticeable." I noticed it! After insisting they fix it, they agreed. They "fixed it" by shortening the other side! So, now the dress has two matching short sides and the front and back hems are the longer length. Really? I won't be back. It's over! read more

Went to A-1 because some of my friends who wear raw demin pants recommended it to me. Although their clientele doesn't seem to center around raw denim, I brought a pair of 3Sixteen pants to A-1 for hemming and tapering. They were finished within five days. The selvedge was maintained. (Being someone casually interested in rather than passionate about raw denim, I googled how easy it was to maintain the selvedge when tailoring denim. Seems like not many tailors know how to work with it.) The taper and the hem fit me well. The person with whom I dealt was confident and reassuring. I brought another pair of pants in today because the crotch blew out. I can't wait to get them back. The people here know what they're doing and the cost is cheap. This is my only experience with a tailor. My needs seem uncommon based on some of the other reviews here, but considering my expectations, the cost is low and the quality is high. I can't speak for their actual service, but immediately when I walked in, neither of the people greeted me, and barely looked up to acknowledge me. They didn't ask what I wanted, so I asked if they could fix the buttons on my coat. They said it looks fine, and I said, "No, I need the buttons replaced." They asked if I had another button, but I didn't, so they said they couldn't help me. I understand if I needed to go buy some buttons for the coat, but they weren't helpful in the least, and clearly don't want my business, so I will be looking elsewhere. read more

My zipper from my leather jacket broke and I asked them how long it would take to fix it. After examining it carefully, they told me that the whole zipper would have to be replaced and that it would take until Wednesday (It was Friday). I checked inside Bivouac next door and they had an alterations store in their basement. It is pretty hidden but there is a really nice lady there and after showing her the jacket, she just slid it inside in 2 seconds. She didn't even have to use a tool or fix anything. She fixed it and added a stopper for free. Please avoid A-1 Alterations, there is a lot better service next door "Ojen's State Street Alterations". PS: The reason why I leave this review is because the lady did it for free and saved me a lot of time and money. So I wanted to thank her. read more

I went in to get 2 tshirts shortened. They did an excellent job. However, the 1-hour job was $25, and the service was terrible. When I asked how fast they could do it, they asked how fast I needed it, like they were trying to buy time. They would not quote me a price beforehand. When I asked for a receipt, the woman asked me "Do you need a receipt?" as if it would be a lot of trouble. The first time I came here was with a next-day rush repair that a different tailor in town hadn't bothered to finish on time. I promised him that if he did it for me, I'd bring future tailoring to him. He did, and I did. He tailored a handful of items for me over the years ranging from adjustments to clothes of varying difficulty to sewing patches onto military uniforms to fixing a ripped seam on luggage. One time he took the initiative to fix a poorly sewn patch after putting a different one on. When he pointed out the fix, I sheepishly admitted to having done the original work. I just took in several pairs of jeans to be repaired -- they'd all developed pretty significant rips. A-1 repaired them so beautifully that you can't even tell there were rips! They even reinforced the jeans in places where they were wearing thin -- to prevent future rips. And they were really nice. I highly recommend them! read more

They almost always get it just right, and when they don't they'll re-adjust it without charging extra or having a bad attitude. Family owned and operated, and everyone there is very friendly. Personally, I had a very bad experience here. I'm a college student and I went between classes to get my dress hemmed. I pulled out my dress and before I even put it on, the owner was like "that dress is short, are you sure you want it hemmed?". As I am short and did indeed want it hemmed, I said yes, ignoring the insinuations of his comment. He then proceeds to tell me that he is very busy right now (with the one other customer in the store) and that I should come back later (even though I was on a time crunch and was rushing the order so it would be done within a few days). I still came back later in the day and set up the measurements to hem it, while getting judgey looks from the man and woman working there. When I asked how much it would cost, they gave me an unnecessarily high price (probably thinking they can take advantage of a college student) so I took my dress back and told them that was too expensive and I would find somewhere else to go. The woman then started begging me asking how much I would be willing to pay for it, but I did not want to put up with their unfriendliness anymore so I took my dress and did not even end up getting my dress hemmed there. read more

I just left this place and I am furious. I brought them a 300 dollar designer dress to have taken in and they said it would be an easy fix. When I picked it up today, they didn't let me try it on and said it was good. I got home and put the dress on, and it is still too big and they did a terrible job, rather then taking the time to properly alter the dress, they folded over the sides and stitched it up. It bunches at the side and it's still huge! I took the dress to a new seamstress in hopes that she will fix what a1 ruined. read more

I had a very disappointing experience with A-1. I left several high quality items, and received them back with holes in two of them. The tailor said the holes had been there when I brought them in. I asked why he hadn't mentioned them when he took my measurements or why he hadn't called to ask why I was paying to have my garments altered if they had holes in them.
