    Shrimp Quesadilla Plate

Food was great! I've had shrimp quesadillas at way more expensive places in way bigger cities that tasted way worse. The portions were perfect for feeling great after eating. I like the chill atmosphere and our waitress was very kind. Definitely get the salsa it was so good. For sure will get again if I'm ever passing through.

OJ's Mexican Restaurant in Claude, TX, ready for breakfast.

I found myself driving through Claude, Texas on a September Tuesday morning, and was looking for breakfast. There aren't many restaurants in Claude, and there weren't many open, but I managed to stumble on OJ's Mexican Restaurant, which had a bright OPEN sign lit, so I knew I was about to enjoy a delicious Mexican breakfast. As you walk in the restaurant, you'll notice, beside tables, there is a cash register and food for sale, which includes everything from fresh flowers to pre-paid money orders and phone cards to Mexico. Such a great breakfast! The eggs were cooked perfectly, the ranchero sauce was flavorful and spicy, but not hot, the potatoes were perfectly fried and the refried beans tasted like the amazing beans you find in a loncheria, at a small town in Mexico. The breakfast was delicious! When you're touring Claude, Texas, and you're in the mood for some great TexMex cuisine, stop by OJ's Mexican Restaurant. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly, and you'll love the friendly, small-town diner atmosphere.

The food was fresh and tasty. The atmosphere may have been very casual but we could not have asked for a better meal on our roadtrip!

It's different from ALL of the many Lupita's in Amarillo, and the service and foods are both top-notch.

We stopped at Mejia's Bakery while passing through town looking for a quick lunch. At first glance,…read morethe place almost looked closed--it's very unassuming from the outside and located in an older strip-style row of storefronts that gives off a bit of an old-west small-town vibe. Don't let that fool you though; once you step inside it's clear this is a very authentic Mexican spot. The interior is long and narrow. On the right side when you walk in there are bakery cases filled with a wide variety of traditional Mexican pastries and baked goods. On the left there's some seating and an ice cream area, and further toward the back there's a larger seating section that looks like it's used for their buffet (which we were told they offer on weekends). We visited on a Wednesday, so we ordered from the counter instead. The people working there were very friendly and welcoming, and the prices were very reasonable. I ended up ordering a cheese quesadilla with fries. The fries were actually excellent--crispy, salty, and exactly what you'd hope for. The quesadilla itself was okay. In fairness, this is clearly a place that specializes in more traditional Mexican dishes, and I probably didn't order the thing they're best known for. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food and pastries, this seems like a great local spot and it's definitely worth checking out. If your taste leans more toward American-style Mexican food, you might find the menu a little different than what you're used to. Overall, a friendly local bakery and restaurant with very fair prices and a lot of traditional options.

Visiting my girlfriend and her family in Amarillo led me to trying some of their favorite places in…read morethe city. My girlfriend's mom was especially excited to take me to El Tejaven while I was visiting. This dinner was a celebration of my girlfriend's sister playing in the top All-Region orchestra. It has nothing to do with the food itself, but I want to mention it because she did a great job performing and I think it deserves to be remembered here. It is the reason we went in the first place. It was a busy night at El Tejaven before we arrived. A group of 32 was just wrapping up dinner. Thirty two people. At that point, just cater, dawg. It took about 20 minutes after arrival to get seated, but it likely would have been much quicker if it were not for a group that size. Once we were seated, we were served chips and salsa. The salsa was spicier than I was prepared for, but it was good. The chips were excellent as well. Most people at the table ordered margaritas on the rocks, while I got a dressed Dos Equis on draft. From what I tasted, the margaritas were solid. For appetizers, we ordered the small queso and the small ceviche. The queso was standard but good. The ceviche, on the other hand, was exceptional. I could have eaten a large bowl by myself. I was pretty hungry, so I ordered the Orden de Tacos, which comes with four tacos on corn tortillas. I got all of them with al pastor. I also added a side of rice and beans, which normally comes with the three taco order but can be added on for the four tacos. The tacos were very good and exactly what you want from street style al pastor, especially with the cilantro and onions. It comes out to roughly four dollars per taco if you do the math. The rice and beans were both great and I ate all of it easily. The plate also came with a side of guacamole that had a nice kick, which I enjoyed. Living in Austin with family in San Antonio, it is easy to find good and authentic Mexican food. That does not always seem to be the case in Amarillo, so it is nice to know there is at least one spot in the city that feels authentic and not overly gringoified. My girlfriend's family knows ball.
