I should probably add that…read moreit's shared with The Lemon Tree, but since I moved to the southside a Lemon Tree is a rare occurrence nowadays! As I've said in reviews before, I love a chinese that offers vegetarians something other than just vegetables in a sauce and Cathay Cuisine has the most to offer vegetarian diners in Glasgow in my opinion! Cathay Cuisine is more than just a chinese, they also offer Japanese, Malaysian and Thai dishes, as well as traditional "british" chinese takeaway fare. My usual order consists of fried beancurd and dip (Just Eat will give you an option of dips, don't bother choosing, you always get sweet chili!), fried rice and salt and chilli chips. I also really like the mini spring rolls, they're really crispy and crunchy! I'm also a fan of their salt and chilli beancurd and the sweet and sour aubergine in batter. I've never ordered a dish from here I didn't like! The deep fried beancurd can be a bit hit and miss, last time I ordered it was a bit dry, so I'd recommend ordering a sauce to go with it. I usually get the satay sauce which is a tad on the spicy side. One thing to keep in mind is that the portion sizes here are extremely large! A large rice is more than enough to feed two. A portion of salt and chilli chips will arrive, I kid you not, in a small pizza box, enough to feed four! Great if you are fully prepared for a feast or if you're ordering for a large group, but keep this in mind if you're only ordering for two people (or one person, don't judge me!). Their menu is enormous so I challenge anyone to not find a dish! I usually order from the Cathcart Road branch and deliveries can take up to an hour, so order in plenty of time!! I've converted friends to Cathay Cuisine in the past, so I'm fairly confident I'll be correct when I say, you'll love it!

I saw the generally positive reviews, and typically enjoy Japanese Hibachi and/or Sushi. So we…read morethought we'd give it a try during a brief trip to Glasgow. The staff we interacted with were all very friendly and helpful. But unfortunately, the food was the real weak spot. The hibachi chef used enough salt to cause an immediate coronary - a layer of salt on the grill before adding the meat, before cooking the fried rice, and another layer of salt before the bean sprouts and noodles - you get the idea. The couple next to us agreed that everything was terribly salty, but eat there regularly, and said this was different than usual. So maybe it was the individual chef. At the same time, my Dragon Roll also tasted salty, so who knows. If I were here, I might give it another try, but not likely.

Fortunately it was through an itison deal and it brought the cost down my a massive amount. It was only £19 for 2 people and 2 courses and you still get the pleasure of the Sapporo "experience". Sapporo is a show chef bar, so we had Superman, I kid you not, as our chef. He had a Superman belt and it said on his name badge so it must be true. We sat along with a couple who I believe were from Mauritius, mmm maybe it was Malaysia. Anyhoo, we ordered our drinks and food, which we ordered from an itison menu that Sapporo had created. They must be doing many of these deals, I would double check they are still available as it was it worth it. The sushi was good and the main course was amazing. Superman had many tricks up his sleeve, jumping out your skin most of the time to be honest. They suggest that you tuck in while he's cooking, as it'll just get cold otherwise. Not only Superman but other chef's do make many noises and beware you will also sound like them after a while. Hehe! I swear one of them had a laugh like a looney toon character from Who Framed Rodger Rabbit. I don't want to give away the show as I'm glad I didn't know as I really enjoyed it. It was cheesy but a good laugh, probably even better in a larger group. I need to find out what he used to cook the stir-fry veg as I've never tastied anything like it. The Teriyaki sauce was also delicious including their fried rice. It's an experience, so I say chillax and just enjoy.

So when my man and I were deciding where to go one night I suddeny remembered, as I had only passed by it earlier, "we should definitely go there" I announced with great eagerness. I was excited as they serve Thai, Chinese and Japanese. I didn't realise though that it was 2 restaurants, one upstairs and one downstairs. There was a waiter on the spiral staircase in the middle of the restaurant and both myself and Ian thought he said that the Japanese restaurant was upstairs so I was a little disappointed to find out it wasn't. We were in Oriental and downstairs was called Teppanyaki where the chef's cook in front of you. Anyhoo we Ian ordered Chinese and I had Japanese which felt weird but the dishes were delicious. At least we know for next time to stay downstairs for Teppanyaki.

The Yen is a Teppan-yaki and Oriental restaurant at the Rotunda building near the SECC…read more Teppanyaki is Japanese for "cooking on the iron table" (or some variation) and is cooked right in front of you by a skilled chef on an iron skillet. It's about being entertained as well as being fed, so it's a fun experience. The meal consists of several courses: a sushi sampler, miso soup, salad, a meat or fish of your choice, fried or boiled rice, another selection of your choice with veggies (courgette, beansprouts and onion, generally), and finally a pancake and ice-cream dessert. It's pricey, but you get a lot of food for the money, and a fun experience to boot. Since I've had teppanyaki countless times overseas where it is vastly more popular, I couldn't help but expect Yen to live up to those same standards, and unfortunately it didn't. However, since it's one of very few in the area, as a new experience it is pretty excellent. If you fancy having an expensive date or big birthday celebration, teppanyaki is a great way to dine and have fun at the same time. Also be aware that for large groups you have to pay a deposit when you book. The staff can be quite stern about this, and if you don't arrive ahead of time they can be a little unpleasant. I'd also shy away from the steak as a main course option unless you like your steak well-done. The seafood is especially good, and it's something a little different. All in all Yen makes for a good night out for first-time teppanyaki goers, and is fun for all ages.
