The soft serve matcha ice cream was excellent! The texture and flavour were excellent! The seating area outside and inside the restaurant were very comfortable. A lot of customers came to this matcha restaurant to try different types of matcha desserts. They could sit, chat and eat at the same time. It was good for groups of people as well as individuals. I would highly recommend this matcha dessert restaurant.
Decent dessert and fast food place. The menus say Oh! Matcha but it's the same place. Also called oh matcha on Foursquare. Chanoma specialises in matcha drinks and desserts, and also serves some hotdogs (looked half sized) for a savoury and more filling option. We tried the matcha anmitsu - matcha ice cream in a cup with red bean, mochi balls and some jelly. The matcha ice cream had a nice matcha flavour, not too bitter but not too sweet. The ice cream texture was smooth but not too melty. There was also some brown syrup added on the ice cream but didn't taste too sweet - maybe maple syrup? I didn't try the other additions, but my Husband did mention it had a strange flavour. Perhaps getting the matcha soft serve with flavoured cones might be a better bet. Worth visiting if you like Matcha! More 3.5 than 4
Quick service and lots of matcha options! I was expecting a rich matcha soft serve based on other reviews but was disappointed by the flavor, which had a mild matcha flavor with other sweetener flavors mixed in. The soft serve also melted very quickly, leaving a puddly mess before I got the chance to finish it. Was disappointed but other people seem to like this place so YMMV!
This place is one of the things I'll miss about Sydney. Matcha is my favorite flavor. I was thrilled to find a place completely devoted to making all things matcha. After a tough decision, I ended up going for the matcha float because it's got the best of both worlds, matcha ice cream and matcha tea. Let's just say it was divine. I recommend scooping your ice cream and then sipping your matcha. Don't forget to get some cash at the ATM because it's cash only.
I hven't tried their savory food items but I love their matcha teas and soft serve. They let you mix two flavors in a cone. My go to is matcha and whatever is the newest flavor they are offer that week. I've been really loving their new hojicha soft serve. The flavored waffle cones are also pretty great.
If you have a matcha craving, this is the place for you. Options include everything matcha from the classic tea, soft serves and floats. But it doesn't stop there - black sesame, matcha latte, hojicha has you covered on all bases. You can even mix it up with two types in the soft serve. The queue does get quite long but goes fast.
Japadogs! This place gets the highest possible rating because of it. What is it? It's a North American Japanese fusion dish (originates from Vancouver, Canada). The pricing is just about right but don't expect one to fill you up, get some chips on the side or use it as an entree/starter then head over to tenkomori for more food. I'm sure I'll be back to try some of the other flavours.
Oh the hidden gem that is Regent Place has produced yet another diamond in the rough. I've gone pass Chanoma several times, even being one of those weirdos who stick their head inside the cafe only to study the menu and awkwardly walk out without saying a peep. But the place is very Japanese Hipster-Chic... Whatever comes to mind when you think Japanese Hipster-Chic, that's exactly what it is. Very well kept and lively atmosphere. Well after one ramen-filling night at Tenko Mori, I had a hankering for something sweet. I thought about Yogurtland, but decided to FINALLY give Chanoma a try. The Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream was screaming my name so I gave it a go. When I said I wanted something sweet, it never occurred to me that perhaps the ice cream would be made with REAL MATCHA aka polar opposite of sweet!!!! Wooooo!!!!! If you've never had Matcha before, it's definitely an acquired taste... Kinda like having Budweiser for the first time. But it was soft and creamy and tasted exactly how my green tea would taste if it were frozen :) Kudos Chanoma! I'm coming back to try your Japa-dogs and other desserts. --- Addendum 21/11/13 --- Finally tried a Japa-Dog and I wasn't too impressed. I think because I got the most basic one, Chanoma Dog. Either that or it's because someone sabotage the chili sauce bottle so when O went to squeeze it into a dipping sauce tray, the cap came off and got all over my shoes! Ugh! The employees were quick to grab me a towel to wipe my hands and shoe down. They were also really apologetic; apologizing over and over. I'll give you another try Chanoma... Going to ask for recommendations from the employees next time.
I'm not a big bubble (boba) tea fan or tea fan in general outside of chai, earl grey, green and sweet tea so this review ignores all the tea this cafe has to offer...this review is simply about their Japa-dogs (Made popular in Vancouver, CA) and fries. I came here after a workout at the gym and promptly ordered a Teriyaki Chicken Dog, Kim-Mayo Dog, and Chili-Garlic fries...all this after a protein shake. I'm a big boy. When you order a sausage dog, you can choose 3 different kinds of hot dogs, and I opted for the Aussie kransky. The chorizo is the one you choose if you want a spicier option, and the middle option is more of a bratwurst kind of dog. Those 3 orders total $15.40...not bad at all. Each hot dog is $5.50 or $6.20 except for the Chanoma dogs, which are $4.40 or so. I really liked the Kim-Mayo dog, I would order that one again in a heartbeat. Stay away if you don't like things drenched in mayo though. The Teriyaki Chicken Dog didn't really taste like Teriyaki at all, but it was good nonetheless. If you're a fan of hot dogs and cheap eats and want to try something different, give this place a shot.
The matcha master under townhall station! Chanoma offers a pretty good variety of green tea desserts (ie. Soft serve - to die for!) and drinks plus Japanese hotdogs. I had the matcha fruit anmitsu which had Green tea ice cream, red beach paste, fruit, jelly and some mochi balls on top. It was a good mix of everything and you can choose your level of sweetness. Delicious and great if you have that little bit a dessert craving and don't want something heavy. Would definitely come back for just the green tea soft serve! Reminder that this place is *cash only* some people tend to not carry cash on them, so if you want some dessert without going to the bank you should bring some cash!
There's something intriguing about Japanese food and hot dogs together, so I had to check out this place. The service is friendly and efficient and the seating area has a green feel to it, like you're in a rainforest or something. Awesome. I have to say, the dogs are okay, they're not something spectacular and crazy amazing. I'm actually not a big fan of the flavour combo. But they do good shakes chips and their desserts. Their. Damn. Desserts. Get a load of green desserts here, with green tea being the main flavour. The ice cream is spot on delicious and perfectly sweet, whilst the matcha latte (apparently a better alternative to coffee!) is smooth and aromatic. Their desserts are perfect for sharing between two as you engage in a nice conversation about dogs or something haha. So come for the desserts, they're the bomb!
I always feel a bit odd when my review is going against the mass consensus. Alas in this case my review is based purely on the dessert and not on the hot dogs which I will have to go back for. So just a bit of background about me. I loooovvveeee matcha so when my friend led us to this place I'd never heard of I was so excited. The Japanese Matcha Master. It sounded like an arrival to the Sydney dessert scene that was too good to be true. I ordere the Matcha Anmitsu and was quite disappointed. The flavours just didn't really gel together for me I only really liked the mochi balls. But each to their own taste buds I guess!

Oh! my gosh This soft serve matcha spot is so good, the taste is prevalent without being overwhelming, they have touchscreen ordering which makes the service super fast, the only thing is that the space is aesthetic but a little small and crowded. They offer matcha soft serve, matcha floats, boba, and even special flavor combos like Sakura and black sesame which elevate the flavors! Definitely worth stopping by on your trip down under! read more
The sister and I were excited to try some matcha and black sesame; so we got in line. Service was a bit slow and the line moved slowly. The MATCHA flavor was weaker than I was used to. It was sweet and too icy. I wanted more of the strong earthy flavor. The BLACK SESAME was okay. It didn't have that rich nutty flavor that makes black sesame so great. The flavor was really sweet. The good thing about this place was the price. It's very cheap for some soft serve. I only wish the flavors were stronger. Perhaps the drinks are better, but I didn't get the chance to try them. The food looked good though and I might come back to try some when I'm in the area. Overall, meh. There's too much going on around the area to come back and see if the next thing will be good. read more

I like the hojicha ice cream. It's a roasted green tea. Can't find that anywhere else. I also tried the Hokkaido milk parfait. Imagine what milk candy would taste like. read more

This place was surprisingly good! Had the Chanoma Cheese Dog, Teriyaki Chicken Dog, Chocolate Parfait and Matcha Soft Serve...loved them all. I don't normally enjoy green tea ice cream, but this was very tasty. Loved the bread used for the dogs - they were soft. Just overall, yummy. read more

I only had the Matcha Icecream, it had the strongest Matcha flavour of this style of soft serve I have had in Australia, but it wasn't the creamiest soft serve. The creamiest Matcha soft serve is Aqua S directly opposite this Cafe, but their Matcha flavour isn't as strong. It depends on what style of Matcha Soft serve you are looking for. They had plenty of other things on the menu that I will have to try and review in the future. read more

Whenever I crave for nice green tea icecream and drinks, Chanoma is my go to place! Green tea is nice and rich and the icecream doesn't melt too quickly. They have a variety of hot food to accompany the drinks (hot/ cold) and desserts. Will I go back? Y E S ! Best green tea latte.. And ice cream.. And hot chips.. And everything else on the menu Haha. read more

Found this nice little cafe while walking on George Street! I've only had matcha soft serve once before and this experience was much better than my first. We ordered the matcha frappe, matcha float, and black sesame latte. The matcha soft serve was amazing. Rich in flavor, the soft serve wasn't too sweet so the true matcha flavor was really prevalent. The matcha frappe was very similar to the float, but Id recommend the float if it's your first time because the soft serve was the best part of the desserts. The black sesame latte was just okay. Nothing special. Matcha soft serve is unreal. Highly recommended. read more

I hate Harold D. for taking me here and introducing me to the soft serve green tea ice cream. This is the BEST green tea ice cream I've ever had. And I can't have it when I want it because it's located in a different country. Thanks dood. It's so refreshing and tastes just like real green tea. Not artificial like most places. As a tourist, I would have never come inside this building and would've never known of this hidden gem. read more

Nice atmosphere and very green~ fits the matcha theme of course :) A friend loves matcha green tea and wanted to see what this place was like- was pleased with what we saw. friend ordered: Matcha Shiratama Float Refreshing drink, comes with matcha icecream (float) and rice cakes. icecream order: Soft Serve Matcha Ice-Cream tastes really nice, not too sweet and nice consistency. another order: Iced Yuzu Green Tea Doesn't taste as expected, not enjoyed as much. May have been the citrus that didn't mix well~ read more
Can only vouch for the Matcha soft serve as that was all i got here. I have heard a lot of this place from foodie friends and they highly recommended it. As you walk into the cafe you realise it's actually quote small that first thought. Order and pay at the counter on the left near the door, only accept cash. I stood there for at least 3 minutes then realised people who had ordered were hanging around the cash register! Good heavens!! please people once you have ordered move aside to let other people in to order. Overall, I thought the matcha was ok, and for $2.90 (i think) it was indeed wayyyy cheaper than Aqua S which is directly opposite. read more
YUMMMY!!! Matcha ice cream and black sesame was so good! We were just browsing the shops in this plaza when we stopped by Uncle Tetsu in the surrounding area and found this little gem! Yes, it is a small place, but you can't miss it. Their menu caught our eye and we stopped in for a quick refreshing dessert. I really enjoyed the black sesame ice cream, you get a strong black sesame flavor and it wasn't over sweetened. The matcha was not bad, but I do prefer black sesame over it. It's especially hard to find soft serve black sesame ice cream in the U.S. so maybe that's why it left me with a greater impression. There are 2-3 different combinations of ice cream swirls to pick from. You get the choices of waffle cones or in a regular cup and they also offer quick bites and drinks. Unfortunately, I only tried their ice cream and would definitely return one day to try the rest of their menu items. Pricing was relatively similar to U.S. if we take into account the currency exchange, otherwise.. AUD have higher prices read more

Decent cafe, offering mini- hotdogs and the Japanese style soft serve ice cream. Great if you've been to japan and hankering for some green tea flavour ice cream, and the other gimmick flavours. Warning though, these are tiny hot dogs, about a third of the size of a normal hotdog. They're cheap though, so order 2 at least. read more

Thier matcha ice cream is absolutely good and a must when you came here the flavors is fresh and it is not to sweet but it a little bit bitter but in general it is good and affordable too read more

Having devoured numerous dogs at Japadog during my time in Vancouver, I've been looking for something similar in the Sydney area and was excited when I heard about Chanoma. One reviewer described this place as "Asian Hipster" and I cannot agree more. There's tons of tiny tables and it was easy enough for me to grab one (actually 2 as someone nabbed mine while I was grabbing my drink). I took a quick scan of the menu and settled on the Tonkatsu Dog, described as "deep fried ham wrapped kransky sausage, chopped cabbage, Tonkatsu & tartar sauce, parsley". Deep is my favourite type of fried so I had to have it. I grabbed some wasabi fries for a side and an iced green matcha tea to wash it all down. The fries were perfectly salted, although they could have done with more wasabi, but that's a personal preference. The dog was deliciously crispy on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside. The balance of Tonkatsu and tartar was only made more delicious by the sriracha I spooned on top. The meal was filling - I couldn't finish my fries, and could barely finish the dog. I hope they expand their menu to include more selection, as the only other dog I thought was interesting was the spicy meat lovers. Maybe some seaweed/teriyaki combo - but I'll come back for the Tonkatsu. read more

There is a reason this place is known as the Matcha Masters! I used to pretty sceptical of the whole green tea latte trend (why can't we just drink normal coffee?!) but Chanoma has changed my view. I highly recommend their basic matcha frappe though the one with the oreos is also fantastic! The only problem is that it's not so easy to get seats as there aren't many tables so you may need to hover until people leave to snatch a table for your group. read more

Regent Place seems to be the home of quirky ice cream shops as Aqua S is nearby. This one specialises in green tea/matcha everything offering varieties of soft serves, frappes, cold & hot drinks, desserts, and some hot food. It was quite busy when we visited and the lady serving us was nice. We decided on a Matcha Soft Serve as well as a Matcha Shiratama Float. The soft serve seemed to have a darker and stronger flavour to it than the one on the float. The iced matcha latte had a nice flavour to it. Rice cakes were tasty and chewy. read more
Chanoma is an authentic Japanese style cafe in Sydney, they pride them self on serving the finest quality of Japanese Matcha Green Tea. They have various green tea beverages and desserts as well a couple varities of snacks such as fries and hot dogs. perfect for green tea lovers read more
