Originally, I was a little hesitant to have him trained by any board and training facility because they often use e-collars among other methods of training (that I might not agree with). However, as a novice dog owner, I tried positive reinforcement training a la Victoria Stilwell style, took him to Petsmart for classes, and tried to correct him as gently as possible. After a couple months of this, I saw some positive results, but, generally, it didn't translate very well in any public setting due to his fear and sensitivity to strange noises. In addition, he remained a major puller, which didn't bode well for my mom, who has experienced ruptured veins in her hands due to his excessive pulling. For me, it was just annoying and pretty embarrassing when I couldn't get him under control. In the end, I concluded that my mom and I are not Victoria Stilwell and clearly have no clue what we're doing with and without Youtube videos. The thing about positive reinforcement training that I love is that we maximize and overexaggerate the praise when our dog does something well. What I'm not a fan of is the fact that unwanted behavior often gets ignored and there isn't any real way of delivering a "No" without associating it with something unpleasant/negative. So, I set off to look for a solution and the results that came up were sensible to pretty nuts... The most expensive trainer I came across was a self-proclaimed dog whisperer who charged $1,400 for one 6-hour class. There was one trainer I met with that Teddy was really scared of - so that was a definite "No". The most sensible was Offleash SoCal with their 2-week or 3-week course. Then came the research on every single trainer that was associated with this company. I read EVERY. SINGLE. REVIEW. I mean, every single review - including the reviews hidden by Yelp. And yes, I saw the one single-star review that made me hesitate...so I slept on it for a week before deciding that reaching out to the company was worth it. The names that kept popping up on a good majority of the Yelp reviews were Amanda and Jamie, so I made the request for either one of them. I met with Amanda for the initial consultation and my dog liked her right away, which I took as a great sign! Jamie Camargo was my dog's trainer. And I couldn't be happier with Jamie. She was professional and took care of my dog really well. My dog probably got pretty stressed out from the sudden change in environment and ended up with a bad case of diarrhea, which resulted in Jamie cooking chicken and rice for him. I am grateful to her for taking such good care of him and the results of his training was amazing. Shockingly amazing. For the record, they're upfront about their prices, they do train with an e-collar, they give updates daily, and the dog has to be at least 1 year old and at least 10 pounds. They DO NOT use e-collars on puppies. My dog is 1+yr old and is about 11 pounds and feels the e-collar at a really low level. I tried the e-collar on my own skin and thought it was pretty safe, especially since I know he won't be wearing it for extended periods or in the house. When I picked him up today, my mom and I were trained in how to use the equipment safely. A major positive for me was the fact that my dog is still my dog. He's still playful, loving, and sweet. He's just much calmer in public and, although still sensitive to strange/loud noises, he's not uncontrollable anymore. A couple months ago, if someone had told me that my dog could be trained to walk off leash in 2 weeks, I would think they're trying to scam me or torture my dog. But I was wrong and I'm glad I was wrong! I just wish I wasn't so against other methods of dog training and stubbornly sticking to positive reinforcement, armed with nothing more than a bag of dog treats. For anyone who is hesitant to have your dog trained using the e-collar, I highly suggest doing as much research as possible, then meet the trainer(s) for a consultation, and take some time to consider it. We did a 2 week board and training session with Scott for our 5 month old Australian Shepherd. Me and my partner are impressed at the incredible foundations our trainer has set in stone for our buddy, Asta. Throughout the process, we were constantly updated on his progress on not only his training and his daily schedule, but also his well-being and overall health. We loved that Scott was quick to identify and treat potential concerns including skin irritation (due to our dog's sensitive skin) -- he also notified us immediately. The blogs from Scott were not only detailed, but informative to where we could always reference them when we need a reminder on how to properly execute commands. He even went above and beyond to provide us with a recap video on everything we need to know to continue the training after picking up our puppy. I'm impressed! I picked up my 1.5 year old golden retriever, Honey, from Amanda Lascari today and all the new commands Honey demonstrated were beyond impressive. Honey was with her for two weeks and Amanda uploaded Honey's progress on a blog that had videos, pictures, and descriptions of how they were doing every night which gave me peace of mind. The commands I cared about most were Come, Heel, and Break. I adore my dog but she's selective with the come command and she'd ALWAYS pull me on the leash. When I picked up Honey, both commands were on point and I liked that Amanda took her time also teaching me how to effectively train Honey too. I took my dog on a hike to Runyon Canyon after, and Honey was able to follow through with me privately, and walked right next to me with her heel command when I asked her to. Even without the E-collar! Also- I was also a nervous about the E-collar and Off Leash SoCal uses expensive e-collar that are slow with the progression of the stimulation, unlike the cheap ones. I pressed the shock collar firmly against my palms and I could barely feel a mere tingle at the 15 setting. It goes all the way up to 100, and my dog responds well to 8-15 and you get to take it home with you! All in all - I would recommend Amanda! I feel she laid a great foundation for Honey. For Tanner himself: 5/5 I loved Tanner and believe he was the best fit for our puppy who went into training overly cautious of the world around her. Even in our home, she struggled with being comfortable enough to lay her guard down completely. Tanner was honest since day 1 about Harley possibly not being able to accomplish our goal of getting her off leash. He explained at drop off that he was going to have to build her confidence and just expose her to the world. He was also very kind and understanding while Harley was barking and lunging at him at their first meeting. He took things slow with her and I could tell at pickup how attached and trusting she now is of Tanner. He was very honest and helped monitor our expectations when the company didn't. We had major issues with the company itself (or whoever is in charge of communication): - The disclaimer isn't specific about the off leash goal possibly not being reached. I paid for the 2 week program "which focuses on practical, everyday obedience that is completed with a high level of precision, outside, off-leash, with distractions" as described on the website. The disclaimer on the website states, "It is impossible to guarantee fixes of major behavioral issues such as dog aggression/people aggression and separation anxiety during the 2-week board and train. We can give you control and better help manage these issues." For our pup this meant that she wouldn't reach the off leash goal. If it were specifically stated as an outcome: "dog may not reach off leash goal", we wouldn't have sent her. By the end of drop off when we found out she was most likely not going to be able to get off leash, it was too late to get a refund. Our only option was to send her and hope for the best. Payment is due before drop off and the contract states that you can't receive a refund if you back out within 30 days or so of drop off. Again, I only learned that my pup would possibly not reach this goal from the trainer at drop-off, after payment and payment refund policy window. - The contract or communication with the program before booking omits that your pup will be training while another client pup is also being board & trained in the same household. Our Doberman pup has low clotting factors and we were overall nervous about sending her in general in case she got injured. Obviously the risk increases when another pup who needs training is introduced. We 100% believe that this fact should be disclosed before booking. - After emailing with our concerns, the company said each pup gets at least 5 hours of training and spends most of the other time in the crate :l Five hours outside the crate is ridiculous. I do have to say that this is the company policy, maybe trainers don't follow??? I would hope pups are out of the crate the majority of the day. The statement "private one on one training" actually means 1 dog out of the crate at a time not actually one board& train pup client a day. - We emailed the company with our concerns, after one response, they didn't email us back. - The website says "Post training free lifetime refreshers are available for the life of the canine!" At pickup, we were told it is only 1 free refresher course not multiple as the statement on the website makes it seem. - Finally, all the other reviews are correct. Our pup only listens if the correction collar is on. We understand that this review is quite obviously inconvenient for the company. Kylo was sent to OffLeash SoCal for the 3 Week Board and Train w/Megan. My husband and I have been concerned about our daughter going away (far away across the country) to college and being able to take her dog with her as he is a necessity for her. Although she's been successfully training him to be her medical alert dog herself, Kylo needed concentrated training in high traffic situations (college/university campus to and from classes/ hallways/dorms/rally's etc), extended under (under desks during classes, in eating areas and in libraries etc)...obviously everything else extended sit, down, place, heel... all these commands and disciplines together are necessary for Kylo and our daughter to be successful in college together. We sent our pup to OffLeash SoCal for their two week board and train with Priscilla Rodriguez. I'll be honest, I was truly hesitant to send my dog away for two weeks but Priscilla posted very detailed pupdates on a daily basis. She provided details that gave me information on my pup's progress, who and what she interacted with when training, and how to manage those triggers moving forward. I also appreciate that Priscilla noticed my pup being a bit picky with her kibble that she so kindly added in food topper and pumpkin to her diet to ensure she was eating properly throughout the two weeks. She really went above and beyond what our expectations were. Once we got our pup back, we are thoroughly impressed with the improvements we have seen in the short two days we have had her! She listens to us on command, walks in heel the entire time we ask her to, and manages to work through her triggers. Additionally, she's still the same spunky pup we had before but now she's just overall a more calm and confident dog. I notice she settles down at home in seconds, when it used to take her 30+ minutes to calm down and settle. Of course as with any training, you as the parent of your pup need to be consistent in reinforcing the training for the lifetime of your dog. You can't expect this experience to be a one all change all event. They do state this in the paperwork before starting training to be transparent that it is up to you to continue with the set foundation and keep reinforcing the training they learned. This will also help improve your relationship with your pup over time! While this was a big investment on our part financially, we are so thankful we ended up moving forward with the board and train. We did 4 one-hour basic obedience lessons with our 7-year old English Bulldog who has basically ruled the roost his entire life. Our trainer Megan was excellent. She communicated very clearly and guided both us and our dog through the process with ease. While we were away for our 2 week vacation, we entrusted our 14 month old Belgian Malinois with Amanda for a 2week Board and Train. We used to take Bruce out a lot when he was a puppy, but as he got older, he was starting to be a bit more aggressive and easily distracted by other dogs. He was getting bigger and stronger so it was more difficult for us to control his mannerism which made it harder for us to take him out in public. The daily "Pupdates" with photos, videos, and summaries of Kaia's daily training schedule, along with how much she was eating will keep confident you made the right choice. I have an American Bulldog named Bowser that I adopted when he was about 6 months old. As he got older he became more and more aggressive towards other dogs. He made a lot of observations and tailored the training so Bowser would get the most out of it. He posted a daily blog that broke down the days observations and training. Rob also uploaded videos so I could see what he was referring to in the blog. He even invited me to participate in training sessions so I could feel comfortable and have hands on training with Bowser. He made me feel more secure so I could handle Bowser in public and redirect him for a more productive walk. Although Boswers training just ended, I could tell already that he was more receptive to listening. During the handoff Rob ensured he answered all my questions and also spent time with me, observing my handling of Bowser to reinforce what he had shown me before. I feel confident that I will be able to walk Bowser and redirect him when he becomes agitated or distracted with other dogs. I sent my 4 year old German shepherd Heidi to OffLeash for a 3 week board and train program with handler Reine. Given that she is already 4, she is very stubborn and has deeply established bad habits. I searched around for a trainer that I thought had the potential to change her and settled on OffLeash. Every day I checked the pupdate on my dog, blown away by the progress she was making. After 3 weeks I picked her up and she is a completely new dog. I was unsure if anyone could fix her, and she is amazing. Reine is such a pro and molded her into a good dog. I am amazed and so impressed by what they were able to accomplish in their time together. Heidi used to pull on a leash, would never listen to come, and would occasionally sit when asked. Now, she walks right next to me in heel, comes immediately when asked, and sits anytime I stop walking to cross a street. And her patience is crazy. I had tried in the past to take her to sit next to me at an outdoor restaurant, expecting a chill relaxing meal and instead having a dog that won't lay down or be calm. Now, Heidi immediately lays down and is calm. I can walk her through busy streets, on the beach, in a mall, I could probably take her through the airport - that's how good she is. I can't recommend this K9 training company enough. My dog is 5 years old and had a problem running out of the house, had a hard time walking next to me on leash, and jumping on visitors. We could not have had a better experience with Amanda Lascari from Off Leash So Cal! We signed our 1.5 year old Golden Retriever, Goose, for the 2-week Board & Train Program (Off-Leash). It was really hard to send our baby away for 2 weeks, but Amanda helped us to feel instantly at ease. Every night we were able to check in on his progress via blog 'pupdates' where Amanda shared photos and videos as well as a blurb describing what Goose learned and accomplished over the day. Our pup went from being nearly impossible for me to walk (pulling at squirrels, birds, other dogs) to being very well behaved. I would say the toughest part of the training was actually for us to learn how to adapt to using an e-collar. Our boy tolerates it very well, and it works great to help him remember the correct behaviors, but it also required that we got some training as well. We enrolled our puppy Buckley for the 3 week board and training program. Amanda was great! She kept us informed with his daily pupdates. You can tell she loves dogs and really cared for our pup. He had a blast being in her home and playing with her pets. We love how he walks so much better on a leash and we are practicing all the commands they worked on. Thank you Amanda! DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY WITH YOUR DOGS!! Worst experience of my life.... We left our healthy one year old dog Pacho in the care of this company for a two week board and train program and we were returned with a sick puppy completely untrained. The lack of communication was the first red flag.... We waited for the pupdates every day and we constantly had to ask the trainer what time they'd be up. It wasn't until day 5 that we were notified of Pacho's cough which "got better" according to the trainer...FALSE! Without our knowledge they took Pacho to a vet and he was diagnosed with influenza. We never received test results, paperwork or anything to send to our vet! Plus weren't even notified his condition had gotten so bad that he needed to see a doctor!! So they dropped off our puppy at home and that's when the nightmare started... I now feel stupid for having so much trust on this trainer... because we continued the medication prescribed from whatever doctor he went to and let him rest inside the house because he was exhausted....he didn't get up from 7pm when he got dropped off until 11am the next day. By the time he got up at 11am to use the restroom our dog sitter noticed his left leg was a little swollen. Unfortunately, we didn't get home until 7pm so we could do a thorough check on him. Pacho had an open abscess on his left leg that was getting badly infected. By the time we got him to the emergency room the swelling was so bad the doctor said it's the worst she's ever seen. He had emergency surgery that night and it was the worst experience of my life!!! We had so many questions unanswered... how long was this wound open? Where are the test results we couldn't supply to the emergency room doctor? How did he learn anything on training if he was sick the entire time?!?! Why did they wait a whole week to take him to the vet? Why didn't the tell us his condition was so bad so we could take him to our vet?!?!? Our primary vet would have done a much better job and a thorough check on him. This company and these trainers will not take care of your dogs! BEWARE!! Also, the guarantee is BS! We asked for our money back because we have to pay thousands of dollars in vet bills and we see no signs of any training other than what we taught him and the are refusing... they would rather wait until our dog is better to bring a trainer to our house and prove they did they did their job... the only thing they proved to me is neglecting our dog!!! I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Please don't make the mistake we did. Don't trust this company... sorry for the graphic photos but please see what our baby had to go through and they still want to prove to us they did their job!
