I recommend EveryDog to Every Human with a dog that I know. I like the way the sessions are very casual, but the whole time Dave is working with your dog to teach him good behavior and manners and he's also teaching you how to handle situations in a natural situation. Compared to working with my dog at group training sessions and classes, Dave's method is 100x more effective. Dave taught me through his example exactly how to get the best out of my dog and I can never thank him enough for that! Also, I try not to bug him much, but I know I can always email with questions or concerns and he will get back to me in a very timely manner!

Dave is amazing! He gives you so much feedback, always sends you lengthy follow-up, and is extremely responsive. He really cares about the well being of our dogs. He offers free extremely informative and educational consults. He's a wealth of knowledge and we're grateful we found him, he's an incredible resource and support. He really makes you feel like he's on your team, helps you be confident, and teaches you to teach your dog confidence too. We have two cockers, one we adopted in July. His anxiety/fear issues have progressively gotten worse, especially after a total fail with a previous trainer that used a shock collar and punitive based training. Gunner jumps up at strangers on walks, nips, cries/lunges/barks at other dogs outside, starts crying in our building hallway once he hears another dog bark.... Dave totally gets that these pets are FAMILY, and he makes sure he's educated and will educate you too. I might just have to make "Team Gunner" shirts soon because Dave has made it clear that he cares about him and wants nothing more than for him to succeed. Before our consult he sent us a ton of information, educational studies, links to many resources. The follow up email was just as educational. We had a session Tuesday and were able to check in tonight, immediately got an email response. For a married man with a new baby I have no idea how he finds the time to deal with so many emails and manage to stay up to date on canine behavior... but I'm grateful he does.

We just finished a package deal with Dave and it was so refreshing to have his non-force, 100% positive reinforcement training with our Lolly. She's a sweet 6 pound chihuahua and shih tzu mix so finding the balance of carrying her in a carrier half the time and her learning to go on walks was a bit challenging for us. Dave was clear on his training and tips which made it easy for us to continue to practice them daily. I felt like I knew how to train dogs myself because I grew up with them but I knew I could brush up on skills and learn better ways to encourage my dog. We were very happy with Dave and will use him again should something else come up with Lolly that he can guide us with again. Thanks so much! ~Christine & James & Lolly

Dave has been so pivotal in shaping our 2.5-3 month old german shepherd puppy into a calm, confident companion. We have only had a few sessions with him, so far, but have already seen a marked improvement in our boy's courage and responsiveness. The best part is, it's 100% positive reinforcement, so everybody wins. We HIGHLY recommend Dave to any SoCal dog owners. Especially new ones like ourselves. He's knowledgeable, professional, and, most importantly, passionate about helping dogs find happiness and healthiness.

We are so thrilled that we found Dave. We have a 2 year old rottie mix who is actually fairly well trained in terms of basic skills. We started group training with him when he was a puppy so he knows all the basic commands, he's great in the house, and he doesn't have any separation issues. Unfortunately, the poor little guy suffers from severe anxiety that around the age of 1 started manifesting as fear aggression. He was so afraid (even of us) that our efforts to continue his training at that time seemed hopeless. At the worst point, we couldn't even get near him to put a collar on him or walk by him on his bed without a growl and sometimes a warning snap. We took him to a vet behaviorist who evaluated him and prescribed medication for his anxiety. After about a year of adjusting his meds, he is doing exceptionally well under the circumstances and our vet behaviorist recommended we start training with him again. The medication has relieved his stress response considerably, but the stimuli that frighten him are still a challenge (other dogs, kids, strangers petting him, garbage trucks, etc.). We'd done group training with another force-free trainer in the past and one private session, but our concern with her was that she seemed to want us to just avoid all the things that stimulate Ender's fear reaction. This is really really hard when so many things scare your dog. We heard about Dave through a friend and figured we had nothing to lose with the free consultation that he offers (wow, right?!). We were immediately impressed by Dave. He is the 4th trainer we've used, and he'll be our last--no more searching for a good trainer! He asked a lot of questions initially to really understand our dog and his issues and what we've been doing to try to work on them. In our two training sessions, he helped us to understand the difference between rewarding avoidance and counter-conditioning. It's a subtle (but really important) difference. He demonstrated exactly what we need to do in the situations that cause anxiety to start developing more positive associations. This is advanced stuff, and Dave knows it all. Not only does he know what to do and how to do it (in action), he's read all the research and will even send you the relevant stuff the day after your training session. After just two sessions and about a week of training, we are already seeing significant positive improvements in our dog. We couldn't be happier! It was also really nice for us to find a trainer that really understands and connects with our dog and sees what a sweet boy he is in spite of his anxiety. It was a pleasure working with Dave, and we plan to do a session with him every few months going forward to assess progress and move the training process forward. We highly recommend him!

My dogs and I love Dave! He is an awesome person and dog trainer. He helped harness the intense energy of my two German Shepard/Rottweiler sisters, Butter and Mala. They can be a lot to handle and I wanted a dog trainer that could help me chill them out and also work on training them together. Dave knows what he's talking about and takes the time to get to know you and your dogs. His advice is invaluable and he has an answer to every question. He is very responsive through email, text and call and even though he's extremely busy (look at all these 5 star reviews! High demand!) he fit us into his schedule. Butter and Mala's behavior has improved tremendously and will continue to do so as I implement the methods that Dave has taught us. Even though my 4-pack has concluded I know I can always turn to Dave for any advice I will need in the future. He completely follows through with you and puts his customers first. I'll never go to another dog trainer again and would recommend him to EVERYONE! He also has the cutest baby ever! With much love, Chelsea, Butter & Mala

I have an ~8yr old Yorkshire terrier, Choco, who is the sweetest dog, but barks at anyone visiting my house and sometimes nips people at their ankle if she doesn't like them. I finally thought it was time to seek professional help and met with Dave. He really knows what's good for dogs, from the food they eat to how they behave. It gave me a lot more understanding of how dogs think therefore act so after one session, I've been practicing with Choco with the tips he gave me. I've been seeing an improvement so I can't wait to see how Choco will be in the weeks to come! By the way, I knew Dave was really something because I've never seen Choco so friendly with a stranger before. After he managed to get her calm down, she listened and became very affectionate, comfortable, and playful wth Dave! He knows what he's doing/saying so if you're in need of a dog trainer, don't hesitate to call for a consultation.

    We miss Dave!!!
Thank you for everything,

Sasha and Meeks

WE MISS DAVE!!! We still talk about him all the time. Remember Dave said.. is a frequent sentence in our household. What can I tell you about Meeks? Over anxious, over hyper, over the top personality. Dave was very clear that he did not want to change who our dog was but how to make the relationship with our dog better. Dave really cares about what is best for your dog. I had so many preconceived notions about how a dog should act and a lot of his training was to help us understand the best environment for him. Dave is passionate and understanding, and genuinely wants to help no matter the dog or issue. We learned so much from him and our "little Meeks" has come a very long way.

The commotion was so loud that several neighbors rushed outside. It took two people to dislodge the dog they were walking from my puppy - one neighbor told me she wedged a broomstick into the dog's mouth and the second neighbor told me he lassoed his own dog's leash behind the dog's hind legs and pulled backwards. My neighbors called 911. My dog was severely injured, had to stay in the veterinary ICU for several nights, and required six weeks of daily bandage changes and over $20,000 of veterinary care. Her personality was permanently altered and she is very fearful. My hand had over 20 puncture wounds, required stitches, and is still numb to this day. This company refused to pay for my dog's veterinary bill or my medical bills. I retained an attorney. Their response was to state in a legal filing that I "voluntarily interacted with both dogs" and therefore caused my own injuries and to file a cross-complaint against their own client (the dog owners who hired them) and ask for a judicial determination that their own client should have to pay for the bills.

Where do I even begin with this review?!…read more When we first reached out to Leonard, we were completely at our wit's end with our dog. She's a six year old Portuguese Water Dog with a ton of energy and was EXTREMELY leash reactive, constantly overstimulated by everything around her on walks. Despite wanting her to come everywhere with us, taking her out felt dreadful & exhausting. I always dreamed of having a dog I could take to a coffee shop, sit, relax, answer emails, and just enjoy being out together. But that felt completely out of reach for us. I knew something had to change, I just didn't know where to start. That's when I found Dominant Dogs and came across Leonard Ludovico. I was hesitant, but after our initial consultation, he gave us confidence that things could improve. He recommended his three week boot camp, and we decided to trust the process! By the two week mark, I was already blown away. By the time we picked her up at three weeks, it truly felt like we had a completely different dog. Walking her is now easy. Being outside with her feels fun, freeing, and effortless, something I never thought I'd say. What really stood out is that this training wasn't just about changing our dog, it changed me too. Leonard helped shift how I showed up, not only with my dog, but in how I approach interactions more broadly. I truly cannot recommend Leonard enough. This was hands down the best money we've ever spent, and we absolutely plan to work with him again in the future. Thank you, Leonard, for everything. What really sets Leonard apart is how much he helps you understand your relationship with your dog. He teaches you how to lead with confidence and take ownership of the environment so your dog doesn't feel like they have to. That shift alone was huge for us. From day one, Leonard was thoughtful and intentional--he really wanted to make sure we were committed, which I respected so much given how much time and energy he pours into each dog. After our boot camp consult, he told us that if it went well, he'd take our dog that same day--and he did. The change started immediately, and now the difference in our dog's behavior (both at home and out in public) is truly night and day--in the best way. Leonard treats every dog like his own. The level of care, structure, and consistency he provides is exactly what we should have done from the start. We had worked with three other trainers before him, and unfortunately none were effective--some even made the aggression worse. Leonard's approach was the only one that truly worked. His boot camp is absolutely worth the investment. We are so grateful for everything he's done and hope to work with him again for future dogs. Our dog is happier, more relaxed, and more confident--and so are we. Thank you, Leonard. We genuinely miss seeing you on the weekends and learning from your perspective on both dogs and life.

Prior to training, Xavier struggled with leash pulling, jumping, excessive barking, anxiety, and maintaining focus when he was excited. He could also be quite stubborn. Heather's approach is firm but kind, extremely structured, and highly intentional. She took the time to tailor the training to Xavier's personality rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method. Throughout the entire stay, she was also very communicative, providing daily updates through a dedicated blog, along with photos or videos and details about how much he was eating each day. That level of transparency made it easy to trust that Xavier was not only being trained, but genuinely cared for. When Xavier was returned to us, Heather conducted a formal, hands-on training session with my cousin and me to ensure we understood everything he had learned. While we know ongoing reinforcement will be important especially since not everyone was present for the initial return; we feel well-equipped thanks to her guidance. (from their same trainer that I've inquired 3x about before committing to a membership, still haven't heard back). I asked why this wasn't communicated ever before committing to a membership and they didn't have an answer. I informed them that I would've paid for training before committing to a membership if they would've let me know that there were any issues. Our dog went a couple of more times until they could finally get me in touch with the trainer, 6 visits later. Actually I had lost complete trust at this facility. To add insult to injury, I was able to speak to one of their actual workers that is with the dogs and she let me know that our dog is only let out for about 10 minutes at a time, maybe 3 to 4 times a day during a 12 hour stay. This is their VIP option. So not only is he left in a room for about 12 hours a day, with dogs barking all around him, he's not being stimulated nor played with just being let out to go to the bathroom. Contradicting everything they say that they offer. Their "trainer" is also a joke. He is supposed to be from the Marines and well-versed in the breed of dog that we have. Upon washing him for 5 minutes, as I was told, he said that our dog needed to be neutered before he could be trained because of his energy. Our dog is a Malinois and is not supposed to be neutered before 2 years of age. We've since went elsewhere to get our dog trained from someone who is actually educated on his breed and he's worked on all of his anxiety and reactivity issues that our pup got because of this place.
