This isn't the best photo of Breck, but I just wanted to show how comfortable he is in his crate now, thanks to Dee's help!
    Justine S.

A quick update since it's been a little over a year since Dee took us on for walking and other behavioral training and I'm happy to announce that the training has stuck! When I first adopted Breck (who is 85 lb), I thought my arm would fall off because he pulled on the leash so much. Even worse, he knocked me down (bruises and scrapes and all) a few times trying to go after cats and squirrels. I signed up for Dee to come by for 2x/week walking sessions where she would take Breck out and teach him out to walk on a leash, correcting him step by step if necessary. Even more importantly, she taught me how to handle Breck on a leash, and how to "correct" him if he relapsed. Within weeks, Breck was barely pulling on the leash. Now, Breck is the perfect walker who doesn't ever pull at all and only stops to sniff and eliminate when I say it's OK. I also literally can't remember the last time he gave into his prey drive! The other very important thing that Dee encouraged us through was crate training. I was a little doubtful of the necessity of a giant 4 foot crate in my apartment, especially when Breck showed intense fear of the crate and wouldn't get near it. However, Dee highly recommended it and showed me how to slowly woo Breck into the crate by throwing special treats and eventually feeding him from the crate (starting at the entrance and eventually moving the bowl to the back). Now I completely see how right Dee was, since the crate is so clearly Breck's "safe" haven where he goes to rest, or where he runs to when he's nervous. Breck was extremely rattled by the La Habra earthquake a week or so ago, and as soon as the earthquake ended, he made a beeline for his crate and curled up in there. Thank you Dee!

The commotion was so loud that several neighbors rushed outside. It took two people to dislodge the dog they were walking from my puppy - one neighbor told me she wedged a broomstick into the dog's mouth and the second neighbor told me he lassoed his own dog's leash behind the dog's hind legs and pulled backwards. My neighbors called 911. My dog was severely injured, had to stay in the veterinary ICU for several nights, and required six weeks of daily bandage changes and over $20,000 of veterinary care. Her personality was permanently altered and she is very fearful. My hand had over 20 puncture wounds, required stitches, and is still numb to this day. This company refused to pay for my dog's veterinary bill or my medical bills. I retained an attorney. Their response was to state in a legal filing that I "voluntarily interacted with both dogs" and therefore caused my own injuries and to file a cross-complaint against their own client (the dog owners who hired them) and ask for a judicial determination that their own client should have to pay for the bills.

Where do I even begin with this review?!…read more When we first reached out to Leonard, we were completely at our wit's end with our dog. She's a six year old Portuguese Water Dog with a ton of energy and was EXTREMELY leash reactive, constantly overstimulated by everything around her on walks. Despite wanting her to come everywhere with us, taking her out felt dreadful & exhausting. I always dreamed of having a dog I could take to a coffee shop, sit, relax, answer emails, and just enjoy being out together. But that felt completely out of reach for us. I knew something had to change, I just didn't know where to start. That's when I found Dominant Dogs and came across Leonard Ludovico. I was hesitant, but after our initial consultation, he gave us confidence that things could improve. He recommended his three week boot camp, and we decided to trust the process! By the two week mark, I was already blown away. By the time we picked her up at three weeks, it truly felt like we had a completely different dog. Walking her is now easy. Being outside with her feels fun, freeing, and effortless, something I never thought I'd say. What really stood out is that this training wasn't just about changing our dog, it changed me too. Leonard helped shift how I showed up, not only with my dog, but in how I approach interactions more broadly. I truly cannot recommend Leonard enough. This was hands down the best money we've ever spent, and we absolutely plan to work with him again in the future. Thank you, Leonard, for everything. Your work is one-of-a-kind, and we're so grateful!!!

What really sets Leonard apart is how much he helps you understand your relationship with your dog. He teaches you how to lead with confidence and take ownership of the environment so your dog doesn't feel like they have to. That shift alone was huge for us. From day one, Leonard was thoughtful and intentional--he really wanted to make sure we were committed, which I respected so much given how much time and energy he pours into each dog. After our boot camp consult, he told us that if it went well, he'd take our dog that same day--and he did. The change started immediately, and now the difference in our dog's behavior (both at home and out in public) is truly night and day--in the best way. Leonard treats every dog like his own. The level of care, structure, and consistency he provides is exactly what we should have done from the start. We had worked with three other trainers before him, and unfortunately none were effective--some even made the aggression worse. Leonard's approach was the only one that truly worked. His boot camp is absolutely worth the investment. We are so grateful for everything he's done and hope to work with him again for future dogs. Our dog is happier, more relaxed, and more confident--and so are we. Thank you, Leonard. We genuinely miss seeing you on the weekends and learning from your perspective on both dogs and life.

Prior to training, Xavier struggled with leash pulling, jumping, excessive barking, anxiety, and maintaining focus when he was excited. He could also be quite stubborn. After working with Heather, he now understands and responds to structured commands such as heel, break, heel-to-sit, heel-to-extended sit, and heel-to-down and what impressed us most was how receptive and engaged he was with her commands during the handoff session. Heather's approach is firm but kind, extremely structured, and highly intentional. She took the time to tailor the training to Xavier's personality rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method. Throughout the entire stay, she was also very communicative, providing daily updates through a dedicated blog, along with photos or videos and details about how much he was eating each day. That level of transparency made it easy to trust that Xavier was not only being trained, but genuinely cared for. When Xavier was returned to us, Heather conducted a formal, hands-on training session with my cousin and me to ensure we understood everything he had learned. She was patient, thorough, and happy to reiterate techniques as needed, which made us feel confident continuing the training at home. While we know ongoing reinforcement will be important especially since not everyone was present for the initial return; we feel well-equipped thanks to her guidance. Most importantly, we trusted Heather completely with Xavier and would absolutely leave him in her care again. I would strongly recommend Heather and OffLeash SoCal to anyone looking for a trainer who is professional, compassionate, and truly invested in long-term results.

Unfortunately, this place was a HUGE disappointment and had a huge negative impact on our pup. Long story short -- Everything here is a sales grab. The few girls care for the animals but the "managers" and men there are just there for the commission of your packages. I had a whole conversation about their unethical sales pitching with the employee while picking up my dog lol. It's "how they keep the place open" - the employee's words, not mine. Astounding. Said employee also asked what I did for a living because I questioned their sales pitch tactics -- I'm in sales. Also, If you need their VIP services for your unspayed or neutered pup, please spend your money elsewhere!! Before committing to a membership, we did a trial day and spent hundreds on drop in days, grooming, and overnight boarding to see if it was a good fit for our high energy pup. Our dog is not neutered and we don't plan on getting him neutered so we chose their VIP rooms. His breed is also extremely high energy and they promised they could accommodate. I also inquired about training multiple times and they kept saying the trainer would contact me. Everything went great after those few visits, they seemed caring and said he was a great fit for a membership so we end up signing up. Then everything went downhill. Upon the first day of the membership, our dog all of a sudden had behavior issues and needed to be picked up. In the middle of my work day I call the shift manager, and he states that if we want our dog to stay, he needs training ... (from their same trainer that I've inquired 3x about before committing to a membership, still haven't heard back). I asked why this wasn't communicated ever before committing to a membership and they didn't have an answer. I informed them that I would've paid for training before committing to a membership if they would've let me know that there were any issues. Our dog went a couple of more times until they could finally get me in touch with the trainer, 6 visits later. Actually I had lost complete trust at this facility. To add insult to injury, I was able to speak to one of their actual workers that is with the dogs and she let me know that our dog is only let out for about 10 minutes at a time, maybe 3 to 4 times a day during a 12 hour stay. This is their VIP option. So not only is he left in a room for about 12 hours a day, with dogs barking all around him, he's not being stimulated nor played with just being let out to go to the bathroom. Contradicting everything they say that they offer. Their "trainer" is also a joke. He is supposed to be from the Marines and well-versed in the breed of dog that we have. Upon washing him for 5 minutes, as I was told, he said that our dog needed to be neutered before he could be trained because of his energy. Our dog is a Malinois and is not supposed to be neutered before 2 years of age. We've since went elsewhere to get our dog trained from someone who is actually educated on his breed and he's worked on all of his anxiety and reactivity issues that our pup got because of this place.
