To begin - the booking was simple and clear - Mike immediately connected me with Joe Garza - I can simply and confidently say - one of the Best Guides I have ever had the opportunity to fish with. He helped make me a better angler - it is not about catching the most or biggest fish - it is about understanding the environment and learning how to integrate catching fish while supporting conservation. I will for sure fish again with Joe - his skill and coaching ability transcends fishing - I will forever have a deep respect for his commitment to the outdoors while having an outstanding fishing adventure. Thanks Joe!

Off the Hook Flyfishing was fantastic. We were flying in from SC and Mike was so helpful and matched us with just the right guide. We were in Yosemite National Park, and David, our guide, was able to give us recommendations on everything from restaurants to what to make sure to see in the park. When we met him on our scheduled trip, he was kind, professional and welcoming. I was the only one with experience flyfishing so it was important to me that my husband and son had a good first experience. David fulfilled my Hope's and more. He taught them the basics of flyfishing and put us all on lots of fish! We had such a great time. Thank you David for imparting your passion for flyfishing on my guys! We now have a new family activity we all love!

This trip was our third experience with Off the Hook and every trip has been fantastic. They are very selective and particular with their guides who are not only good fishermen, but also good teachers! It's one thing to know how to fish well yourself, but it's a different set of skills that makes someone a good teacher and all of our guides have been great at both. Our latest trip was to Napa River with Patrick and we landed some awesome Striper with his coaching and knowledge of the river. We would highly recommend Off the Hook to anyone, from total novices to advanced skills, they are top notch!

Finally getting around to writing a review for this great outfit! Have booked two trips so far with Off the Hook...a half day float on the lower sac and a full day walk and wade on the McCloud. Was able to grab a tag for the nature conservancy early morning on the McCloud and nailed a Brown of a lifetime thanks to local knowledge of our guide Steven Fry. From when we first contacted OTH to follow up conversations after our trip, the customer service was great from start to finish. Mike helped us talk through the different rivers and plan the best trip to get us on the fish and enjoy our day stress free. Had the Opportunity to camp with Mike and his family prior to my first trip and this guy knows his stuff! Great people, great company, with hand selected, knowledgable guides for the best experience out there. Look no further, these guys rock!

His first striper, first time fly fishing! Bryce was our guide and was EXCELLENT! They caught a lot of fish on the delta!

My 10-year old son wanted to go fly fishing for stripers (striped bass) while we were up in the Bay Area. I don't know where he got that idea because 1) he's never fly fished before 2) he's never seen a striper 3) his parents don't know anything about fly fishing or stripers and 4) isn't it easier to just use a spinning reel? Why make an already difficult task even harder!? I searched on Yelp and found Mike C. at Off The Hook Fly fishing. I told him what I was looking for (striped bass) and he suggested taking fly fishing lessons prior to the fishing trip to make it a better experience. One week before our trip, we took one lesson from a guy in Hawaii they recommended (since they know anglers from all over the world) and the day before the trip, we took a lesson from Patti, who is the fly fishing instructor for Off The Hook in Napa. These lessons were extremely useful and it was great to see different teaching methods/styles. When I told friends that my 10-yr old wanted to fly fish, most people told us that it's really hard and he probably won't be able to catch anything. My son wanted to go anyway. When you go with an experienced guide who knows the area and the fish, you definitely have a better chance at success. Bryce was our expert guide who landed a fish while he was showing my son how to cast the line the first 2 times! My son caught his first fish pretty quickly, so he was pretty excited when he caught a bunch more, it was all he could talk about for the rest of the day-he would not shut up about fishing. The fishing trip was the highlight of his entire trip and the next time we are in the area, we will definitely give these guys a call again! Highly recommend!

    Fun day on the Delta!

So maybe I have to come to terms with the fact that I am bad at fishing. Anyways I thought we could stack the deck and come here. It was a beautiful day and the lady at the store seemed welcoming and helpful. The facilities are nice and seemed clean. You could enjoy the picnic tables and make a day of it with older kids. We fished from 10:00 (opening) until 12:15 when my kids lost all patience. We tried a few different spinners. Then we bought worms per her recommendation, then even bought powerbait. Anyways we couldn't catch anything. She said they had just stocked the pond this morning. You could even see the fish jumping which made it more frustrating. I will say though in the two hours we were there, maybe 15 poles were in the water. During that time frame not a single person hooked a fish. So, hopefully it's not just my problem. I felt bad for the guy next to me. He had his grandson with him and he had driven 3 hours to try to manufacture a good fishing experience for the little guy. So, if you have similar ideas, please be warned there is no guarantee here. It's $10 per person to enter. We had our own poles. The worms were $8 and the powerbait was $7.50. From what I could gather, catching a fish is around $20.

My son was absolutely thrilled--he managed to catch another beautiful golden trout, just like last time! The excitement on his face was priceless, but what made it even more special was the little surprise that followed. After his catch, they handed him another coupon for a free entrance on our next visit, which made him even more eager to come back again. There's something about this place that makes family bonding feel so natural and meaningful. From the calm surroundings to the shared excitement of fishing, it creates moments that really stay with you. Watching my son enjoy every second, celebrating his catch, and already looking forward to the next trip--it just makes the whole experience even more worthwhile. It's truly a wonderful spot for families, and we'll definitely keep coming back for more of these special memories.

One of the main roads to get up there is just above the town of Fairfax in Marin County. It is a windy road but short, like 10 minutes or so. There are also a lot of bikers who like this area, so watch out on those narrow roads. Once you get closer to the park, the pavement stops and you will have to drive on large gravel for quite a bit, so don't be bringing your high end luxury car here. Lol Once there, an $8 parking fee through a kiosk awaits. I did a 6 mile loop starting at the dam and starting on Alpine lake. Easy start for the first mile or so, with most of it being lakeside. Then the middle 3 miles goes deeper into the forest cover and is more strenous, a constant climb that will speed up the heart rate. Love doing this amongst forest air. Deep in city confines...not so much. The descend will bring you back to where Alpine Lake and Bon Tempe Lake meets, by the dam. The top of hike is exposed and rocky but still gorgeous. Actually reminded me a bit of Tahoe with rocky trails and exposed blue skies. There will be a view of the lower elevations of Southern Marin County. There will also be many glimpses of neighboring Mt. Tam. And after that great morning workout, I was able to have a nice relaxing outdoor meal at one of the many charming independent restaurants in Fairfax, just 10 minutes down the road. Great way to start my stay-cation.

A post on NextDoor.com caught my attention. Someone had just moved to the neighborhood and was…read moreasking how they could hike without paying the $8 parking fee they'd noticed in some areas. The deluge of responses made it clear: if you're paying to park in Marin County, you're doing something wrong. With only a single exception in memory, I don't think I've paid to hike anywhere in the county and these days all I do is hike. But, if you want to hike the grounds of the Mount Tam Watershed it is true that there's a $8 cost to that. You can get around this by purchasing an annual parking pass or checking a pass out from the Marin County Library system. Bon Tempe Lake is my favorite hike within this area of the Mt. Tam Watershed. With an easy to follow, well-trod, 4.8 mile path around the lake's perimeter, and situated only minutes from downtown Fairfax, Bon Tempe is a quintessential Marin experience. You're in nature, beside a gorgeous, placidly serene lake yet only 10 minutes from a good brunch or latte. There's nothing difficult about the hike around the lake and though it isn't flat, it's elevations are quite gentle. If you need more, add a loop around Lake Lagunitas (the two paths intersect) to increase your hike by another 1.2 miles. Fishing is allowed here (but no swimming) and the parking area - for Bon Tempe in particular - fills up early on weekends. All the more reason to make time for Bon Tempe on a weekday. There's lots of hiking options here in the Watershed but for my money, the half-shaded-half-sunny path around Bon Tempe is the loveliest of them all.
