I don't remember my barbers name but he was an older gentleman in the back left. I went in for a cut and showed him a picture and described how I usually get my hair cut. He completely disregarded what I had said and pretty much did what he wanted and then mid cut when I reiterated he acknowledged what I said yet I came out with nothing close to what I wanted. It in fact is probably the worst haircut I have ever gotten I would just be extremely clear with what you want and go for one of the younger barbers because in my experience they tend to hear what you want clearer. read more

I came here late in the evening with my wife and kids, which I was initially worried about with the reputation barbershops have, but they loved the environment as the music was clean, there was no cursing amongst the patrons, plenty of room to move, and there were snacks available. I moved to Atlanta recently, and it's surprisingly been a struggle to find a good, consistent barber. I over love this barber shop! Mr Karl the Master barber and owner has been cutting my son's hair for 3 years now. My son has a disability and every single time I drop him off and pick him up, either Mr Karl, a customer or one of the other barbers always come out and greet him and help him at the door. Mr. Karl let my son get away with paying him what ever he likes for his hair cut, I would go back and try to pay him and he will not take the money. This is the type of man he is. I've started giving my son whole dollars so that he can pay the correct amount for his hair cut. I always recommend this shop to all my friends when they are in town. So, I've been living in Castleberry Hill for a week and a couple of days now. Love the neighborhood. As a black man, one of the first things we do when moving is look for a decent barber shop (gotta stay fresh). Even though I didn't get any recommendations, Google always comes in handy. I did a simple search for barber shops in Castleberry which lead me to Off the Hook Barber Shop. The next thing I did was read the reviews which seemed decent so I decided to give them a try. Plus, the shop is only a 4 minute walk away from my loft. First, I called to make sure I didn't need an appointment. Walk-ins were welcomed. However, when I arrived I felt less than welcomed. The barber shop was packed which is typical for a Saturday. I walked through the door with an attempt to make eye contact with as many barbers as possible. To my surprise, no one spoke or even acknowledged me. Still, I continued to walk through the shop to an available seat in the rear near what I like to call their "indoor bodega" filled with candy, chips, sodas, tobacco products, t-shirts, etc. There were at least 8 barbers on duty, 1 was a female. Everyone seemed in very good spirits in the barber shop. There was no loud cursing or inappropriate language which I really appreciated. However, once again, many barbers kept walking past me not acknowledging my presence. After sitting there for an hour and a half, a female stylist who was by this time doing her second head of hair asked if I was waiting on anyone in particular. I said "this is my first time here I was hoping someone would hook me up but no one ever spoke to me." She asked my name and apologized on all their behalfs. I accepted the apology and said it was all good. I don't remember her name but I do remember she mentioned she had been there for 7 years. Then, the barber who was directly next to me, who had also ignored me and was packing up his gear to leave, walked over to the barber next to him, Tariq, and asked if he could give me a cut. Tariq walked over, introduced himself, asked my name and said he would be with me as soon as he finished with his current client. Once he was done he came over and showed me to his chair. I thanked him for taking me on. I told Tariq how I had just moved to the neighborhood and how I found the shop. He stated he was the newest barber there, only since January. This barber was a great conversationalist. He asked about my travels, education, career, family and things to do in the city. It was really appreciated. By that time I had forgotten how I was basically ignored. My haircut came out great. I felt like a million bucks when I got up. Tariq gave me his business card and I gave him a $10 tip in addition to the $20 cut because he turned what could have been a very negative experience into a positive. Because of Tariq's skills behind the clippers and good conversation I can truly say I've found a new barber in Castleberry Hill. I will return next week. If you are new to the neighborhood and you find yourself going to Off the Hook Barbershop I would suggest walking in the front door turning cartwheels or maybe bringing a set of drums to gain the attention of the barbers or else they won't see you. read more

After finding GlamBar here on Yelp & having an upsetting experience, (more on that later), a barber in the area recommended Melody at OtH. I can't even tell you how on the ball she was, but I'll try: My afternoon had been botched since the other salon didn't have a stylist avail to do my hair after scheduling my appointment. Melody took the call & confirmed that she could take me on in less than an hr. I was happy to find she's not a stylist that tries to rip you off by charging more due to the length of your hair. Upon my arrival, she was pleasant and let me know that she'd get me started within the next 5-10. From the time I sat down, we had great rapport, she seemed genuinely concerned & was very cognizant of my hair's nature & condition (I have very long, natural hair). She & Mo were wonderful, making me feel right at home and joking like we were old friends. The gentlemen in the shop were congenial and respectful, making the environment comfortable for everyone. Although Melody was also working on another client, I never had to wait more than 15mins to move the to next step of my appointment. She had me in and out in less than 2 hours, despite my hair's length! I ended up with a beautiful result at a great price, and I'll definitely be returning. read more

All the barbers have more than enough experience but Therrel (first chair on the right) never disappoints and the price is always right. It's simple. An at home feel in a shop that has been around for years in a good location. Matter of fact let me tell you a story... I called my barber Carl, last week after I moved up to buckhead he had like 4 people waiting ( the guy can cut) and I'm not one to wait. So I decided to play the field a bit and check out my new local barbers since I am no longer a castleberry resident. My god brother and I decided on a shop he had frequented in the past. We walk in and the spot is cramped. They got about 5 chairs stuffed in a 12'x12' they call a shop and I proceed to do my first-time-shop-stop-barber-evaluation. Im looking around and one giy looks like he does more talkning then cutting, another guy has his personal hygiene in order bur he looks a little fruitty; the next dude looks like he cant cut; and the ither guy is white (no offense but when it comes to haircare, this is the most segregated imdustry we can all agree on that cant we?! Come on lets be mature about this;) And I spot the barber that looks the most refined (relatively speaking of course). I say "bro, how many you got waiting" he replies "plenty man, you're the next walkin available" then he takes a survey of the barbers who have appointments and who don't and when the next non-appointment-having barber becomes available they assign him to me. It's the fruity looking "stylist" to me and not only does he take entirely too long for my patience spans but he also charges me $10 more than my barber here at Off the Hook. Hence the reason I'm checking in today. So I say all that to say this. Go for what you know. And I know Off the Hook is one of the best. I hate to go anywhere else. Some of these features are a friendly environment, professional barbers with couth, and the shop stays clean and inviting. I found OTH by doing an internet search summer June 2017 after not having success with reliable barbers who know what they are doing. I was so impressed with the reviews and pictures, I had to take my son there to try them out. We came early one Saturday morning as a walk-in and within 5 minutes my son was in JACE's chair. At the time I didn't know he was the barber my son and I was hoping to get based on his pics online. His cuts are clean and very precise! From a fade, high-top Gumby to a low cut with waves... JACE can do it all. My son has a weekly standing appointment. Communication is key to success!! If for whatever reason, I'm not able to make it or need to change my date/time due to travel or my sons football schedule. I just let JACE know and we adjust accordingly and vice versa...No worries!! I came to this barbershop on a short trip/getaway from home. I had never been here and my father to be took me as he is a loyal customer. I was set to get my haircut by a man I believe to be named Joe (or that's what I remember, sorry Joe). He was great. He cut my hair exactly how I like it and more. I'm very particular about who cuts my hair but I felt like I had been going to him for years. His skills are top! And though it's simple as far as his method, it's all that you need. I would go back every time if I could and sadly I will be going home some time from now but if I am to return, Joe, you've got a customer. Visited this barbershop to get a haircut recently and quite honestly I didn't have the opportunity to get a haircut. Firstly, this shop lives up to its name "off the hook", as the environment is so chaotic that it's very difficult to understand what the heck is going on... there are countless people standing outside, towards rear of the shop, upstairs, etc. And people just pop out of nowhere who are given priority over those who are sitting and waiting. Perhaps these people had appointments.. not sure. My suggestion to who runs or own this barbershop would be to implement some sort of system that acknowledges " walk-Ins" especially given that you readily advertise that walk-Ins are welcome. When I moved from California to Georgia there definitely wasn't a lack of black barbershops in Atlanta. I've been to a number of places from from the east side to the west side to the south side. .. nnnnoott really up north God bless their hearts. When I came to off the hook I was in limbo. Going to the east to have my haircut by a dude who constantly swore in front of little kids and women. Frequently sent his buddies to the package store to get his drink of choice and would drink while I was in the chair. Needless to say when I came to "Off the Hook" I was happy at the level of professionalism. Once I sat in Tariqs chair he made sure I would be taken care of and I voiced my concerns I had with other barbers and assured me that it wouldn't happen here.
