My wife and I saw our second show at Off Broadway Live. The first was excellent, and this one (Chicken Fried Gospel) made it a trend. It's a well kept secret in East County, but not for long. Just got back from seeing an awesome Eagles/Joe Walsh/Don Henley tribute. Wow, what an amazing ensemble (8 musicians and singers)! This was one of their Supper Club concerts. The buffet dinner was excellent, one drink (beer or wine) included plus unlimited non alcoholic drinks. Dessert was served at intermission. Hard to believe this little gem is in a strip mall in Santee. The setting is intimate with only 4 rows of tables for 2 or 4. Lots of free parking. And to top it off, their customer service is excellent! I had an issue with my tickets (my fault) and Steve went out of his way to find a solution. We'll definitely be back! read more

What a wonderful experience! What talent for any stage but surprising on such a small venue. As said before in other comments, no parking problems and fortunately for those living in east county, close by!!! Downright outstanding. Two talented artists bring you the best in story and heart warming entertainment. . It could make you laugh or cry and the singing will make you tap your foot and clap your hands. Audience participatiion is fun and welcomed. My husband and I have seen the first two shows and have really enjoyed both. Steve and Bob are excellent hosts and great singers. The venue is perfect for what they do. (Sort of a "Karaoke-Theater" with the two of them singing to recorded music) Just today, we saw "Chicken Fried Gospel" with catered food by Louisiana Fried Chicken. I've never been there and looking at current reviews made it seem hit and miss. However, the fried chicken, collard greens and red beans and rice that I had were all great! Then came the four part Southern Gospel and the place really rocked. The music slightly over-powered the voices at time so the mix could be a bit better. For me, less is more. We will definitely be back. read more

Fabulous!! We just attended our 4th show this past weekend and will be there again soon..., this tine for "Sentimental Journey", on March 13!!. ..We can't wait. This time we attended the dinner show. The food was delicious and, as usual, the performance was terrific!. We sing along...sometimes before we are invited to... and often relive wonderful memories. This time we brought my sister who was visiting and was a music and theater major in college. She was also blown away by the whole thing. Steve and John go well beyond talented; they are showmen who from start to finish, pull in the audience. We are not just watchers....we become part of the show...including the always friendly welcome and goodbyes. You will be hard pressed to find a place for a better evening and leave with a bigger smile on your face than Off Broadway Live!! We can't wait for the next performance. read more

I am really surprised by the high ratings this venue received. I am an avid theatre patron and prefer to attend the smaller intimate venues in San Diego, supporting local artists. Among my favorites are the Intrepid Shakespeare, Ion, Moxie, New Village Arts and Cygnet Theatre companies. The community theatres such as On Stage Playhouse in Chula Vista and Coronado Playhouse as well as Community Actors theatre in Oak Park are also among my frequent choices. I really believe in the importance of the arts and live theatre so as a native New Yorker and a Lakeside resident I was beyond thrilled when I heard of the OFF BROADWAY LIVE Theater in Santee. I was finally able to attend my first production this evening, seeing The Dance, which was touted as a new Romantic, Musical Comedy. The venue was clean, and spare with ample cabaret style seating. Lighting and sound were excellent and the stage is large enough to support a full set and production. However, I was completely taken back by the fact that the show is not in fact a play. It is actually two moderately talented aging male singers who wove together some disparate songs to a lame feel good cheesy story. If you like wholesome goofy singers you may like this. Not my cup of tea though the singers did try hard, almost too hard. I am disappointed because I had high hopes for real theatre in East County. Maybe these guys will share their space with a community acting ensemble. The moniker, OFF BROADWAY LIVE is completely misleading; don't be fooled by the name. This is nothing like Broadway. Sorry Bob and Steve, I tried to like you but I won't be back. read more

Bob & Steve really put out the effort during this nearly two-hour performance. You will get your money's worth. I had really been looking forward to attending this theatre. I did not realize it was 100% music not a show or play. In my opinion this building does not have the acoustics to play very loud music. The dinner was great, the entertainment could have been terrific. Sitting area much to small to accomodate the audience. The owners and performers have captured the heart of Santee. read more

I was going to give it 4 stars, but then took into account it is basically in my back yard........so it got 5! I heard through a friend a production of Rent was showing there. I had not heard of the theater so was excited to give it a try. I had problems locating the Rent tickets on their website so I called and was told the theater wasn't promoting it just supplying the venue and I was warned it contained offense material and was asked if I was still interested??????? This part confused me? It is RENT it contains controversial content but to go as far as to call it offensive frankly offended me IT IS THEATER! I did not let it deter me from purchasing tickets and glad I did so. It was a GREAT group of local artists and a very clever rendition. I loved the searing in the theater, the "inexpensive" snacks, and the very kind employees.. I look forward to seeing something in the future. read more

Santee is very fortunate to have such a great venue on a regular basis at a good price. This is real quality entertainment! You have to check it out. "The Dance" was just delightful and so was "Boys of Summer." They will be starting a new show soon called "Decades" and we will be seeing that. I appreciate that this is in my community and gives me the opportunity to support Santee. Bob and Steve are very talented and work hard to make patrons feel welcome. A real surprise has blossomed in an out-of-the-way mall in Santee. I was intrigued when I first heard that a musical theater cabaret was opening in East County. I have lived out here for 30 years, and theater has never been the hallmark of living in this part of San Diego County. The many problems attached to the East County Performing Arts Center would have been enough to discourage any entrepreneur looking for a place for their venue to flourish. With this in mind, I approached the reality of Off Broadway Live with more than a little trepidation. What a pleasant surprise! The theater, a former Blockbuster Video store, is well realized, comfortable, and welcoming. The show itself, written and performed by the theater's owners Bob Schulze and Steve Rolf, is a professionally presented evening of entertainment, of a quality that is as high caliber as it was unexpected. The duo possess strong, polished singing voices and magnetic stage personalities. The acting is top notch, with a smooth delivery and an immersion in character one does not often see at a level less than our revered regional powerhouses like the Globe and La Jolla Playhouse. There is an intimacy in this small space that is fully realized by the production, and used to its fullest measure. Frankly, there was so much that is good about this venture that I will not criticize what flaws there might be. My husband and I enjoyed this evening out so much that I know we will be back again. I strongly encourage others to give Off Broadway Live a try. We need more of this innovative style of entertainment, and supporting it will be the bonus benefit in addition to your good time!
