She…read morewent on and on how it doesn't look like much but it sent her dreaming of her back packing days across Eastern Europe and hours spent at coffee houses with luscious desserts. With that thought, I went almost the next day. The little strip mall looks lonely and the biggest thing there is the mediocre Italian bakery with the cranky staff. This store is tucked away in the corner of the 'L' shape. It says deli and bakery on the signage. When you walk in, holy ... Hanging sausage smell. Not only did this little store carry a lot of deli meats, they were practically curing their own. An elderly gentleman manned the store and he didn't speak English but that did not stop him from enthusiastically sharing, showing, and pointing out all the wonders from his Eastern European homeland. All baked goods here are handmade and it really shows. They're not pretty but they're ridiculously large, boozy smelling, and filled with either lots of butter, real whipped cream, dense dark chocolate, or alcohol. Oh and one pastry that is filled with awesome salty fatty succulent pork. That pastry is nearly 10 inches long for only $4. The chocolately booze bomb came in a rum ball form and a chocolate cake that can only be described as a Bavarian mousse, dark chocolate brownie, and sacher torte love child. The chocolate glaze/ ganache Iis slathered on but the first bite is heady with a fruity sweet alcohol. Another highlight is the apple streusel here. They're about a foot long and stuffed with apples. I thought this would be great for my brunch guests but it didn't last the night in my house. Oops! This place is no looker and neither are the goods itself but it makes it up in great flavours, real ingredients, and a lot of love and enthusiasm.

There is a ready made food section with a variety of dishes, I usually go for the cabbage rolls which are different from what you buy at Starsky, they are the better homemade version, stuffed peppers, soups. Lots of pastries and there is also a meat section with sausages and cold cuts. There is a frozen food section where you can get frozen pierogies, spanakopitas and even soups in containers which you can warm up at home. Freshly made apple strudel, cookies, European style super chocolaty cakes.. I believe the older gentleman who is the owner is very welcoming and helpful and so is everyone else. And if you are looking for something in particular just ask the staff, the deli is small and sometimes you just don't see everything they have behind the counter.

Not only do they bake a good variety of breads every morning, they also have a great selection of cold meats, cheese and lots of other Eastern European grocery goodies stoked up. My go to is always the locally made seed bread, which is delicious! Hint: it's always baked on Wednesdays, and they may sell out fast ;) I am looking forward to trying their sourdough, which I found out about last week. Fresh every morning at 9 am.

La Salumeria is an old-school Italian deli located along Yonge St. near Glebe Rd E. (between…read moreEglinton and Davisville subway station). A Toronto institution since 1984, this specialty grocery store sells lots of high quality European products as well as has a large deli meat and cheese selection. They also do deli sandwiches where you order at the counter, where the sandwich is made to order. I've heard of this Italian neighbourhood gem for a while now where I finally went to try their sandwiches recently (on a Saturday!). Walking to the storefront, we almost missed the shop as the "La Salumeria" was so unassuming where the colour was fading as well. Walking inside, every inch of the store was filled with products. Reading other reviews, we made sure to pick up our bread before heading to the counter, which had a short line (about only 3 people ahead of us which was a relief since we went on a Sat around 1pm). Near the cashier there were also lots of delicious looking baked goods as well. We opted to grab a kaiser bun and an Italian bread for the house special sandwich. We also decided to get a mortabella sandwich with the ciabatta bun. At the counter, service was friendly and efficient. All the staff at the deli were working hard to serve customers, making sure that we were attended to. Carlo, the owner, was also present in the shop, helping out making sandwiches as well as recommending customers certain cheeses and answering questions. After placing our order at the counter and handing over our breads to the staffs, we waited about 5 min for our sandwiches to be made. Paying at the cashier, the shop takes cash, debit and credit. When we left, there was another staff who opened the door for us. We ate our sandwiches once we got home. The house special which consists of prosciutto, spicy salami, creamy buffalo mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, spicy peppers, fig jam, balsamic vinegar and olive oil, was delicious. The quality of the deli meats and cheese are definitely the highlight of the sandwich! The fig jam also adds a slight sweetness to the sandwich which works incredibly well with the rest of the ingredients. We also shared a mortabella sandwich which consisted of mortadella, pistachio cream, burrata, tomato and lettuce. The mortabella was good but the house special is definitely the sandwich to order! Priced at around $16 each, the portions of the sandwiches are hefty with ingredients packed inside. The ingredients itself speak for themself as they are fresh and top notch! Service was quick and efficient but friendly. Overall, a great spot for take out sandwiches and other specialty grocery store items. They also have a large selection of deli meats and cheeses as well. Definitely want to return to try the rest of their other sandwich options in the future!

I'm not sure if this was actually what caused the Subway to go out of business but I wouldn't be surprised. You're greeted with classic deli smell when you walk in. To the right is the bakery counter with desserts like cannolis and cookies. Since it was close to Thanksgiving, there were full sized pies available. I'm told that on the weekdays, that's a hot counter that has great lunch options. The back of the store has the deli counter that has a big selection of meats and cheeses. We went with salami and pastrami on this occasion. To the left of this counter are all the breads. Some are on racks while others are in baskets that you can grab with tongs. We grabbed some kaiser rolls here. The middle section of the store are grocery items. There were a lot of Italian specialties that and artisan goods available. There was flavoured risotto, herbed olive oil, and those big Italian cakes that come in a box for Christmas but was pumpkin flavoured for fall!

Prices are very reasonable. The bread has a perfect texture and taste in every bite, whether eaten alone or with the wide selection of deli meats (love that they will do thinly sliced that melt in your mouth) and cheese. I'm also happy to see that they offer nitrite free chicken or turkey as well. I also tried the mini pizzas. They were ok for a quick bite. The staff are pleasant, and quickly ask if we need help. The deli counter can be a bit slow depending on who looks after you. The place is small and gets busy. Lunchtime is also busy when customers drop in for Italian hot food takeout. Overall, I recommend this bakery. Some of the regular customers recommended the hot meatball or chicken/veal sandwiches loaded with grilled veg so I'll probably try those next.

As I made my way over to Eddie's from the Wisła Deli, I marveled at how similar this area of…read moreMississauga is to parts of Warsaw. Signs on establishments in Polish and the style of buildings transported me back to my days living in the southern neighborhood of Warsaw. I had a little more time to spend shopping for Polish goodies before I had to head on to my next stop, so I decided that I was going to make it to Eddies Meat and Deli. BEST DECISION EVER. If you saw my review of Wisła, you know that this trip was on Holy Thursday, and just as before this place was PACKED. The lines to order meat (fresh or deli) were long as was the check out line. But we'll get to that. As I walked in, I was immediately struck with the larger assortment of products. I found my beloved Almette spread, and was willing to pay a high price no matter what because it is so difficult to obtain when I'm back at home. As I was scanning the dairy case, I came across Mlekovita's packaged Gołka cheese. For those who want to be accurate, this isn't oscypek, but it was close enough for me. The salty, smoked, "squeaky" cheese is a treat I haven't had in years. I took four packages.. I threw a couple of other items into my basket, and then hopped in line to check out. I didn't get any of the pastry items, but they looked so good, and I'm sure if I was local, I'd be ordering far too often. When I got to the counter, I asked the young girl to get me some krem oliwkowy from the cosmetics shelf behind the register. I was very excited to see the ziaja product in the small green pot. This cream has a scent that evokes a sense of nostalgia for me, but it is so rich and nourishing and it was a favorite of mine that I haven't had in years. I ordered once on amazon for a ridiculous price that I couldn't justify. So to see it here made my day. I checked out speedily - there is something to say for Polish efficiency, and even got a free Wawel chocolate bar. I would definitely say that the staff here are must more friendly than in the other store I visited. It made for a much more pleasant experience. Currently (April 2025), there is a lot of construction going on on Dundas Street, so I highly recommend using the side street at the light to access the back parking area. It is much easier especially if you need make a left turn out onto Dundas.

We initially saw huge, gorgeous danishes, rolls & bread that had self serve tongs & bags. We got a cherry cheese & a blueberry cheese danish - so big each needed its own brown paper (lunch sized) bag. Super yummy, loaded with sweetened cheese & fruit. Makes me regret not getting the apple one too! Then we walked back to the hot food area. To the left were dozens of sausage links hung up behind a deli case full of slice to order cold cuts. A big menu of smoked meats, ribs, cabbage rolls, etc., was in front of us. Then we saw what I can only compare to my childhood memory of Stouffers french bread pizzas. We got one of each - mushroom & cheese and ham & cheese, warmed up. They warmed them for us - the light crispy french bread & both flavors were delicious! We also got a garlicky spinach feta & a pork crepe. These were hefty! Thin crepes with filling & rolled compactly. Both were so yummy! We also got some self-serve bulk pickles that were fantastic. We would have gotten some bags of frozen blueberry or cherry or meat pierogis too, but we had too far to drive to keep them frozen. Everyone we spoke with here was so friendly. They had tons of delicious looking cheeses, meats, jarred spreads & pickles, and other condiments, as well as Polish candies. This is a GREAT place for groceries, a quick meal, or to prepare a meal at home. Loved it here!!
