Went on the opening night March 27th 2012, I thought it would be a great treat for the kids being the first ones into the opening of a new cinema.
I expected a red carpet, fire eaters, Clowns, Papparazzi, freebies and goodies.
I had bigged the place up to the kids (10 & 12yrs) letting my imagination of what an opening night in my eyes would consist of.
I let them book it online using my credit card (a first for them I think they where more excited about getting to shop online) and told them to choose the movie and get the best seats in the house!
They where really excited and booked to see the Hunger Games in the ISENSE theater. Tickets for 2 adults and 2 kids came to 36 euro.
So we where all excited and because I drive a Luas it was free travel for all straight to the Cinema, (If you've never been its at the Luas Point stop opposite the O2, Next door to the Gibson Hotel, and facing Harrys Bar)
As I've never grown up I was as giddy as the kids and expected to be greeted by a throng of Papparrazzi, whilst stopping for questions from radio, and TV, and rubbing shoulders with glitteriety.
How disappointed I was to be greeted by a pimply teenage security guard in a new but un-ironed shirt, he was having a sneaky butt, and looked to be avoiding the CCTV, like he was a prisoner in Colditz.
Wheres the red carpet? the kids queried excitedly........... yarr wha? replied the smoking shirt, red carpet?, nah theres nun of dat. The cinemas up da stares, if ya hurry ya can get a free coffee.
Yes folks......opening night in one of the countries newest and hippest locations, with was is advertised as the largest screen in Ireland where giving out a voucher for a free cup of coffee.
There was no red carpet, only a huge entrance you'd compare to a shopping mall, its big white and cold. There where a few posters advertising a pirate and scientist movie which we didn't take much notice of.
Security pointed us to the top level. We could have taken the lift but Chloe has a phobia so we rode the several what seemed like never ending escalators until we reached the foyet.
No great shakes here either folks, having taken the stairway to heaven we where disappointed on our arrival to find an average looking cinema foyet, just like all the rest we've come to expect form modern day cinemas.
The kids had 10euro each pocket money burning a hole in their pockets and where instantly attracted to the pick'nmix.......off they ran whilst I used the latest technology to print off the tickets using the card they'd pre-booked with. This was cool as we didn't have to queue and it printed our ticket in about a minute.
Over I strode to the kids whilst Lesley went into claim her free coffee from the franchised coffee store 'Costa Coffee'. The kids mindful that they would require drinks as well tried to calculate the cost by individual sweet, where as I just jumped in and quarter filled my bag with big fizzy cola bottles.
There is also a 'Ben & Jerry's beside the pick'n'mix, where we had to pay by weight. Dannys came to 4.60 euro and Chloe 5.25 euro for what seemed a miniscule amount of sweets (more like 3 x 10p bags in old moneys worth)
I was dreading weighing mine and my dread was well founded when the chirpy sales girl said 9.86euro. I could have baulked but as it was a treat I smiled and paid through clenched teeth.
Just then Lesley arrived back from the 'coffee shop......."well say's I, did you get you free coffee", well kind of said Lesley It was either a black or white coffee with the voucher, and I wanted a latte, but i couldnt use the voucher for a latte so I had to pay 3.80euro.
Then we had to queue for drinks, I was behind three teens and they where being served very slowly by a girl who couldn't work out the till so it was nearly 10 minutes before I was eventually served, three large slush puppies, and taco chips and cheese add another 20 euro to my nights cost.
Ahh a photographer standing just outside the coffee shop taking photos........."here we go kids yis'll be on the front page of the metro herald tomorrow"..........not a chance. He was more interested in chatting up the ticket checker and didnt give us a second glance.
I was disappointed for the kids having bigged them up as to what might be.
We where shown towards a stairway leading to an open area that would seat about 12 people.
The ISENSE theater itself was cool, huge screen, 52 speakers (I didn't count them I read it somewhere), the seats where big with plenty leg room and you can see the screen from all angles as thats the way modern cinema are designed, no having to sit in centre back to get the best view these days.
Movie was worth seeing but not as good as the book i've been informed. I wont tell you the plot or ending. It wasn't the spectacular opening night I had anticipated.
If you intend going for a date I recommend you eat before going, and if you've got kids or are on a budget bring your own goodies. Expensively disappointing ;-(( read more
