Somebody having a bad day tried to fire me. This person does not follow basic health code protocol. Doesn't even care about following cdc guidelines |. What a great place this is. Doesn't look like much from the outside and unfortunately never got to see the inside. Brought my father here during his last days as we couldn't care for him at home any longer. Patty the director is an angel and Walter was amazing with coordinating everything. Walter took such good care of us when trying to find a place and assured us that my father would be well taken care of. On the morning of May 15th I was informed of the death of my great uncle, Darwin Thompson. He lost his life to COVID-19 at the hands of Villa Ocotillo Assisted Living facility in Scottsdale Arizona. This awful place refused to test Darwin for Coronavirus even as he was begging to be tested on the last days of his life. Those in charge of the medical care thought it was more appropriate to treat Darwin for a supposed urinary tract infection instead. This was weeks after Villa Ocotillo was already very much aware that they have/had a resident on the first floor that was declared COVID-19 positive. They claimed that the CDC had it taken care of - clearly an attempt to cover their tracks and to keep families with loves ones there at bay. Obviously, Villa Ocotillo did not use preventative measures to ensure the health and safety of their tenants, only proving further how inept they are at running a "care" center. This is a facility where residents (ESPECIALLY on the 2nd floor where uncle Darwin lived) are immensely neglected. I would visit on a weekly basis only to see residents walking around with urine running down their leg, barely dressed, visibly unshowered/unwashed, and the smell of fecal matter so strong it filled the 2nd floor and would make your eyes water. There was hardly staff around to help unless I were to track them down myself and inform them of such situations. The staff was normally found in the nurse's staff room just sitting around chatting - blatantly neglecting the elderly residents that relied on their care. I would even see residents with memory disorders being left alone for such long periods, they were found eating spoiled food they had hidden under their beds and in their drawers. The animosity and heartache I feel toward this godforsaken place is endless & often rendered me speechless - but never enough to eclipse what I will always do to protect my family and loved ones - including speaking out about the injustices and neglect/abuse that goes unnoticed in facilities that dare to call themselves a safe place to live. If you have a loved one or know someone with a loved one at this facility, I beg you please, investigate Villa Ocotillo thoroughly, and if it safe to do so, get them out of there before it is too late. I believe this place needs plenty of maintenance work. The halls reek of urine. It doesn't seem they are maintaining sanitation nor care. The care I receive here is zero to none for my father. I went to visit him yesterday and he was not properly dressed, pressed his call button to see how long it would take. I ended up having to find the caregiver assisting someone else. However, they told me she was alone with all of the assistance needed around there, not acceptable. I commend her for the help and effort she put into assisting everyone. I will be speaking to someone as soon as possible to see the plan to rectify this problem. read more

My Mom moved into Villa Ocotillo assisted living in 2014. She later moved to the memory care unit in 2018. I cannot say enough about the caring staff at this facility. Mom made her wishes clear, she wanted to stay where she was at rather than be in the same city as family. Of course this made it challenging for us however the VO staff communicated often and would answer any questions we had. The memory care unit staff had a lot of significant challenges dealing with Mom and they found solutions or asked for our assistance when they needed it. Any planned or unannounced visit she was found to be clean, happy and well cared for. Anyone is welcome to contact me directly if they have any questions. While I don't mean to disrespect any other reviews here, it seems to me there are other issues going on in that family if the person is saying the most awful things about the staff (who I am certain are not allowed to respond back to specific issues mentioned in reviews due to HIPPA). The staff and directors at VO have been wonderful to my mother, as well as our family. Mom has been a resident there for 3 years. While it could use some renovations due to age, it is still kept clean and sanitary. I have been there for several meals and the food is pretty good, too. My mother loves the activities, and looks forward to being able to socialize again, soon. Patty, the executive director, Walter, the Marketing Director, (whose office is next door to my mother's room), Rachel, the wellness director, Erika and all of the other caregivers, make sure my mother, who has dementia, feels safe and taken care of. I have never seen any of the nastiness commented on by the other reviewer. The staff at VO has been dealing with a horrible situation with COVID-19. They were not allowed to test everyone because of lack of supplies, as is the case with most of the privately owned assisted living facilities (different than nursing homes run by the county). They are doing everything they can to make sure their folks are safe. They took every precaution possible the minute COVID started, which is why their case numbers have been so minimal (3 residents and one staff member to date, as opposed to two places in Chandler which had two dozen or more cases each and several deaths). They also notified each family PERSONALLY of the positive cases. Everything was above board. I am grateful that my mother is safe where she is, and hope to be able to hug her again, soon. My sister has Dementia and was basically kicked out of her first home after being released from hospital during COVID and they wouldn't let her return. Patty and her staff took her in upon release from the hospital in a moment's notice. She weighed 88 lbs, frail,confused, scared. It was a nightmare for her and me. Patty and her wonderful staff along with Hospice have kept me in the loop weekly with video phone calls, window visits, updates, and her needs and changes. She has done a 360 turnaround in 3 months. She is eating again, made friends, and they keep her clean and dressed nicely. She's really improved and I have much less worry in my life about her safety and well being! I see the loving care provided and much more experience with memory care here. I couldn't ask for more except for COVID to be gone and normal visits returned for all. This has been tough times for the facilities, staff and families! I cannot thank Patty and her staff enough! Also hospice nurses. read more

There are many things to consider when you have to make the decision that your loved one needs more assistance and can no longer live at home. The transition of my mother to V.O. was good. She adapted fairly well at first. However, you must live near this facility and visit very often because many things slip through the cracks. Here are some important issues that make this place unsatisfactory: 1. Very poor communication with the facility. All calls go to voice mail or a numbered system if you are concerned about your loved one. Leaving messages is a waste of time, they will not call you back. 2. No security after hours. The door is open to the public all night with no security at the front desk. 3. Lock up your valuables. If you don't say goodbye to them 4. Loved one need special help or is sick? There is a hospital across the street and they can't be bothered to address the residents concerns. 5. Loved one stopped eating or drinking fluids? Expect dehydration and/or malnurishment. 6. Loved one dies here? The staff will not comfort you. They will not assist you in transitioning out of the facility. They will do nothing and there will be no follow-up. That's just the beginning. I don't know why this facility has not been inspected by the State of Arizona department of Health. In short- DON'T GO HERE!!!! read more

My 90 year old mother's dementia had become so advanced that I knew it was time to find the right home for her care. After interviewing many homes and researching all my options for my mother and her illness I was lucky enough to have the pleasure of meeting Patty Soper and the Villas Ocotilla. I knew instantly after calling for an appointment that I was being directed to the right place. A sweet man name Walter welcomed me to come see the Villas. I was able to make the appointment the following morning. I knew when I hung up the phone that there was something different about the call and all the others I had all ready experienced. I was so comfortable with my call to Walter that I was really looking forward to meeting him. Which had not happened to me with prior calls. As I was sitting in Walters office the next morning Patty Sober came in to join the meeting. Within minutes I knew I was in my mothers new home. Patty runs the villas with strength and tenacity and with all HEART! She care's deeply about the residents and runs the physicality in A+++ manner. It has been an honor and privilege to work with a Patty Sober. Her help in attending my mothers needs has been a gift. I can't say enough good things about Patty Soper and the Villas Ocotilla!! Villa Ocotillo is one of the best assisited living facility. they have honest hard working caregivers, polite managment. They always find a way to make you happy if your not satified. The caregivers are fun in Arbor Villa and really care with passion. The other floors caregivers are right on there duties and call lights are answered in seconds. Very Good place to be!!!! read more

I have spent countless hours at this facility on a daily basis for several years. I have seen a steady decline in the level of care, the competency of staff and the quality of the food that is served to the residents for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are a handful of staff, mostly the caregivers, who are very compassionate and competent to do the job they have been hired to do. However, there are a number of med techs who I deem so unqualified to distribute medications, I would not even trust them to give me an aspirin. I have encountered countless mix ups, confusion and lies by more than one med tech in the medication distribution to my loved one. These incidents have not been a one time thing, but have happened repeatedly, on a weekly and/or monthly basis, and that is because my family caught the discrepancies, not the med techs. For the most part, the facility is clean, but there have been a fair share of cock roaches and bed bugs on the premises that I have witnessed myself over the last several years. As my loved one is a smoker, the smoking area is always filthy and is littered with stained pavement from who knows what and cigarette butts litter the gravel surrounding the area. I believe what happens is that staff hoses down the pavement, sprays disposed cigarette butts into the gravel and leaves them there. It's disgusting! Now for the cuisine...DISGUSTING! I find it shameful and disgraceful that the cooking staff feeds the residents of this facility, some who are not able to advocate for themselves, the crap that they are fed. I have been privy to different facilities and the menu and quality of good that has been presented and I have never seen anything as pathetic as what is served at this facility. The silverware is typically dirty, the food is either over-cooked or under-cooked, the taste is such many of the coherent residents opt out of eating in the dining room altogether and, I know for a fact, have complained countless times about the quality or, lack there of, of the food but the quality continues to decline. And don't even get me started on "Fruit plate night". Please tell me how a plate of bland fruit sitting on a bed of cottage cheese is sufficient for the main entree for a resident who is typically not getting their nutritional needs met anyway? A fruit plate should be a SIDE dish...not a main entree. Yes, the resident can order a grilled cheese, hamburger, cheeseburger or soup...but that soup comes from a can and is typically saturated with a top layer of grease and minimal noodles. And on Ravioli night...ever hear of Chef-Boyardee? I cannot believe these residents are given Chef-Boyardee topped with a bit of melted mozerella and it is considered adequate. There are so many places this facility needs to and should improve on. I myself have voiced my frustration and concerns to staff but they have fallen on deaf ears. The location is perfect as it sits across the street from Scottsdale Osborn Hospital. But the overall quality of this facility is so poor I would not recommend it to anyone, especially a potential resident unable to be their own advocate. read more

My grandmother moved into this community about three years ago, and she is very happy here. The place is clean, and the staff is caring and well trained. They have gone through some transitions, but from our point of view things keep getting better and better. This is my grandmother's third home in ten years, and like they say the third time is the charm. Most of the time it has been smooth sailing for us, and for the few times something has gone wrong, the staff and management have been helpful and responsive. They know my grandma really well, and they make the effort to know us family members too. There are lots of activities, the food is good, and there aren't a lot of old people lost in the shuffle here. This place is worth checking out. read more
