So we may be dazzled by the fact it's move in day and we were hungry. But it was SO good! The pizza was the perfect combo of shrimp, pesto, abd sun dried tomatoes-- yummy! The caprese sandwich had such creamy mozzerella and thr right amount of arrugala for a bite. And the breakfast bagel sandwich was savory and filling, could last all day. You can order on the app or in person, but cashless. There's also a nice terrace to eat outside. And since it's beautiful San Diego we did. We grabbed cookie samples which were huge. OVT at UC San Diego is the premier place for Pizza. It is known largely at the school for being the best place to get a pizza. Although not open 24/7 anymore, this place has one of the highest portion sized meals at UC San Diego. Although I do not crave pizza often, whenever I do, I am sure to come here and not any other dining hall. The service, like most other areas around UCSD is pretty good. You are expected to find your own seats and you order your food either on the app or in-person. The ambiance is nice and the view can be pretty nice as well. The area is clean and there is a lot of seating both outside and inside. Compared to the other dining halls, a lot would say OVT is on the higher end. read more

I love Oceanview (typically referred to as OVT) for being so reliable. Of all the dining halls, it's the only one that's open until 1am, good for late night study sessions. Otherwise, your only options are markets for coffee and other snacks. I typically go here for the Scholar's Pizza which is a build-your-own pizza station much like a PizzaRev/Pieology. The ingredients are really high quality and taste very good. Toppings are typical for most diy pizza spots. Good selection of meats, veggies, cheeses and sauces. No ham for my hawaiian though :( The price is pretty steep considering it's $8.50 for only 4 toppings of your choice on a pizza that's about 75% the size of a regular pizza whereas off campus this would be the prize of a whole pizza with all the toppings you could want. For another $2 you can get 8 toppings as well. Service at this station is pretty hit or miss depending on who's working the assembly line. I am also a big fan of the counter culture section, endless selection of pastries, gelato, smoothies and other snacks. The açai bowl leaves something to be desired but good enough for something on campus. I don't frequent the Spice station too often however they always offer options for people with more restrictive diets. Vegetarian, pescatarian, halal, etc. Lines could sometimes get long during peak hours but I almost always find good seating. There's a Coke Freestyle machine for fun soft drink options. read more

I've been coming here for two years now, and it is still my FAVORITE DINING HALL. The pizza is delicious regardless, but there are specific days that it is cooked better than others I'll admit. PIZZA: They automatically give you white dough, but i have seen people ask for wheat dough before. After that, you pick your sauce out of Napoletana Tomato, Spicy Sriracha Marinara, Cauliflower, and Basil Pesto. Tip: you can ask for half and half with the sauces or to drizzle one over the other without it counting as a topping. For cheeses, there is Shredded Mozzarella, Gouda, Parmesan, Ovalini Mozzarella, and Lactose Free Cheese. As for topping, I will attach pictures containing the options but you can either get 4 toppings or 8 toppings, ($8.50 or $10.50 respectively) or you can get plain cheese ($6.00). The pizza section is open from 10:30am to 1:00 am. DRINKS: They have one of those drink machine that you can pick the different flavors for each type of soda, for example you could pick peach Sprite or plain Sprite. PASTRIES: Their lemon bars are definitely better than the ones offered at Pines (the dining hall in Muir). They are more tangy and taste more fresh. When I lived on campus and had oodles of dining dollars, this was the place I loved to go! I was super happy this place opened up (or reopened), it's super beautiful inside and is comprised of many windows and glass doors so the natural lighting can shine through! My favorite places here are the sliced pizza/ wing area and the 24 hour smoothie/ coffee/ donut/ gelato place! The sliced pizzas are made super well - I usually get the margherita pizza because the sauce is spread on lightly but it has a great flavor. The crust is thin, but not too thin - and when it warms up in the oven it gets a little crispy. I'm not a fan of the make your own because the put a lot of salt on the crust after they make it, the dough is also too thick for my liking, and the cheese doesn't melt as well as I would like. The smoothies are a little over priced, but I didn't care when I had dining dollars because they were well made and tasted nice and fresh. It's been many years since I last ate at OVT and I was actually pretty excited to grab some of their great, student-quality Mexican food. OceanView Terrace has a decent selection of food and drinks and is the only dining hall that is open reasonably late. I remember having to walk the length of the campus to get food at night and finding the place absolutely packed with hungry kids with their faces buried in textbooks. I nostalgically ordered the carne asada taco salad with all the fixin's. Topped with only the finest prepackaged, processed ingredients, this monster certainly weighed in at over a pound of heart-stopping food. The shell was a bit stale from sitting so long, but the standard mix of Mexican flavors remixed into a "salad" added new depth to the ingredients. I was reminded of the late night meal runs amidst studying where friends would gather to socialize in their PJs. I was then reminded of the midterms and finals and snapped back to the reality that I was glad to not have to deal with that anymore. OVT was always one of my favorite places to dine because of their good selection and variety. From grilled sandwiches to Mexican food, breakfasts to desserts, OVT was always available to satisfy the hungry bellies of students when the other dining halls were not. The reality is that the food is neither that great nor great for you, but dropping in for a late night breakfast burrito is one of those unique experiences of going to school at UCSD. Lemon bar - 0/10 the raspberry on top is the best part. High crust to curd ratio would be fine if the crust wasn't half-raw. Unless you get a nice corner piece, anticipate a doughy (playdoh) pie crust. The lemon flavor isn't pronounced at all, but you WILL get that stinging citric acid aftertaste. My bar has smelled of raw eggs twice already lol? The airplane food of lemon bars (and lowk inedible) Chocolate chip cookies - 3/10 these are huge. The chocolate chips in these taste better than the ones in the dining hall cookies. I've had these three times. The cookie edges are variably hard/crispy or chewy depending on the batch. At worst, the flavor is intensely eggy and salty. At best, their gargantuan, mind-boggling size makes them a passable option for cookie cravings. Try making a huge ice cream sandwich w the gelato maybe? S'mores brownie - 6/10 much better than the original. I eat the marshmallow/chocolate chip topping before the brownie because the flavor would be imperceptible otherwise. The graham cracker crumble on the bottom gives a buttery, roasted flavor. Beware, it's very messy! Reg. brownie - 4/10 these are like a poorly executed box mix. No chocolate chips in the base :( the most generic fudge flavor you can think of. Smoothie - 6/10 I ask for these with soy/almond milk instead of yogurt, no agave, and w kale. $6 is ridiculously expensive but o well. The paper straw is unpleasant to drink from even before it is soggy, skip it. The London fog is my fav drink! (Love that alternative milks aren't extra here.) OVT is finally back and revamped! While I wasn't here prior to its renovation, I'm very impressed with the new space and their new offerings. The main focus points of OVT are the 24/7 coffee and gelato bar, the DIY pizza counter (the concept is similar to BLAZE or Pieology), as well as an Asian station (they offer a mix of Indonesian, Malaysian, Indian flavors). While I have yet to try the Asian station and the gelato, I have already tried their pizza counter twice within the past week. Since it did just recently, reopen I think they're still experiencing fluctuations with efficiency and quality of the product. During my first visit, around 6:30 PM on a Monday evening, the line was out the door and it took my friends and me 1.5 hours before finally being able to get our food. During my second visit, around 11:30 AM on a Friday morning, the line was very minimal but grew quite long around 12 PM. The crust being overly salty was an issue experienced by all of my dining companions and me during the first visit but they seemed to have resolve it during my second visit. What impresses me the most about this is not the Napoletana Caputo dough they boast but the high-quality ingredients they offer as toppings - think fresh mozzarella balls, basil, sundried tomatoes, baked eggplant, and baked broccoli to name off a few. The food is very good considering that it can be purchased with dining dollars and once the crowd dies down, or once the staff gets into the swing of things, I think the experience will just be so fantastic. My buddy swiped a meal for me here when I came to visit UCSD. The pizza was just alright and is pretty expensive compared to Blaze pizza. The staff that helped me was honestly sooooo incompetent. I hate sounding like a dick but he was very very clueless. I felt bad because I think he was trying, but he clearly went through no training whatsoever. - When I tell him that I wanted marinara sauce, he poured it down the middle of the pizza and didn't bother to spread the sauce to the sides until I asked him to do it. - When I asked him to put fresh mozzarella, he didn't know what it was so I pointed it to him. When he picked it up, he had no idea what to do with it, so I told him to rip it and spread it on the pizza. - They didn't have basil, but my buddy asks him to put on spinach, and he grabs artichoke. - I ask him to put on garlic, and he says they don't have any, but there was a tub of crushed garlic in the corner. - The crust of the pizza was good, but because he didn't squeeze the liquid out of the artichoke and mozarella, the pizza was liquidy on top. In terms of the Oceanview Terrace itself, it is so beautiful. I love the view from the outdoor seating area and the whole interior is clean and bright. To me, OVT is probably one of the less exciting dining halls. There is no "specialty" like Pines or CV or the Bistro....but I have to give OVT kudos for improving over the last year. Service here is good- staff members greet you with a smile, and portion sizes are decent. I like the deserts here though! Used to be a buffet, but because of student suggestions, it is now back to an a la carte. Summer is AYCE. Will come to OVT if I am nearby! Don't get me wrong, the quality of food here is pretty good. However, the staff and the wait times, especially for pizza, are ridiculous. First, the staff does not care and do not have a sense of urgency, even with 50+ minute lines. The workers appear is if they hate working there, not cracking the slightest bit of a smile, and you could almost hear their daydreams as they get lost in thought while doing their job -- making pizza, making dough, etc... Second, the wait times are absolutely horrible. As a student, coming here for dinner for the past five days was a chore, knowing that if I get there at 8:00 PM, I'm expecting to start eating my pizza at at least 9:00 PM. Even for a pizza that is alright in terms of taste, a 1 hour wait is not worth it at all. I am writing and posting this review at 9:40 PM right as I am about to get my pizza, in which I got in line for at 8:00-8:10PM. Today is a sad day. Back in 2004, the thing to do was to play ball until 11pm and then hit up OVT for a bomb breakfast burrito. This place opened until 1am! It was the prize possession for all Marshall students. It was our mojo. Our fuel for DOC. It was the reason we were proud. POTS? What's that? Earl's Place had nothing on us. But as they say, all good things come to in end. Today I discovered that OVT closes at 9pm. Yah 9pm. You graduates read that correctly. Immediately, the glamor and prestige of being a Marshall student falls tremendously. So much for attempting to be nostalgic. My guess is this is UCSD's attempted lock down on unhealthy late night eating habits. But everyone knows that a light bedtime snack helps clam the nerves and promotes REM sleep. For some, a light bedtime snack can be an over-sized breakfast burrito. In my case, it would act as recovery food from some intense basketball. Regardless, the place is closed so I can't judge the quality of the food. UCSD should take a page out of market research and approach this decision with what the students want. If they want a late night cafeteria - it might as well be OVT. On the bright side, OVT's being closed probably saved me 7 bucks on a potentially terrible breakfast burrito. OVT and their signature breakfast burritos. I just had one for the first time today. I don't live on campus anymore and I was planning on getting the grill, but alas! It wasn't open until 2pm. So I had to actually get my first real breakfast burrito. They're huge, and for those of smaller stomachs may be more suitable to eat throughout the day. It's enough to cover all three meals. Lots of protein, and veggies if you so choose (I got everything, just a little less on the onions). I actually quite appreciated the presence of the mushrooms, that was a highlight of my burrito experience. The other highlight was the cheese. If given a choice among only the dining commons, OVT is (and has always been) my favorite. It's open late, its cafe is rather good (along with the pastries!), staff is friendly, and their grill (which is alright, but rather good in comparison to other places on campus) and breakfast burritos are practically the only edible food on campus. Everything else is okay, but hey, it's campus food, what does one expect? One star off because I've never actually been able to see an Ocean View from this Terrace. (Ah, ha, ha...) One day with my roommate, we bought one banana wrap and one chicken caesar wrap, and traded halves. They are absolutely fantastic -- they are huge and you get to choose your ingredients, which include: chicken, beef, cheese, rice, tomato, lettuce, and tasty guacamole. Those damn burritos contributed to freshman 15,(it actually was about 10 lbs and it was during my junior year). The pizzas and quesadillas here are sinfully fantastic as well. Plus, OVT has a decent selection of groceries. Like most of the dining facilities at UCSD, OVT has a cafe and smoothie bar and there is Chinese, Italian and Mexican food available, but the quality of the food at OVT is superior to the other dining halls. Not to mention, the place isn't called Ocean View Terrace for nothing. If you have to use meal points, I suppose OVT is better than most of the alternatives. However, I am graduated and happen to eat here before my extension class. For some reason, which I'm sure you psych majors can easily explain, the food tasted much, much worse when I had to pay in cash...For one, paying in cash means you are the jacka** that slows down the line (it doesn't help that they dont carry enough change at the register). Secondly, it makes me consider all the other things I would rather have spent $5 on. But really, what can you expect from caffeteria food. I would give it a 2, but I'm giving it some credit for being a college cafeteria and better than the other options on the UCSD campus. It's pretty average all around. There's a sandwhich bar, which is decent, but not exactly cravable. Pasta is not very good because it's really watery. Most of the stuff from the grill is not very good except for maybe the fries. Theres also a milkshake/smoothie bar, which is probably the best part. Everyone loves the burritos, but seeing as i hate mexican food, i can't speak about that. The pizzas aren't too expensive, at just around 8.50$. Plus you can get a cheese pizza for only 6$. As far as make-your-own pizza type places go, it isn't too shabby. Compared to the other pizza I've tried on campus, I don't think anything at UCSD that could beat it. The variety of toppings isn't that enormous, but all the standard ones are there and it's enough to get the job done. The pizzas do very a bit though based on who's making it, I've been before and I was given a bit less of each topping than this time, but the taste was definitely there on both visits. One thing that earns this place major points is that they make the pizza fresh right then, while a lot of other places keep their food under a heat lamp until someone buys it. The taste is definitely there and even though it probably shouldn't be an every day thing, I'd probably go often to get a break from the other dinning halls. The tables are never clean. I worked there for a couple of weeks and the cleaning standards aren't even very high.... My food tasted like cleaning chemicals one time, and they will dip large dishes in a sanitizing solution and let it dry on the dishes, rather than rinsing. I assume this is why the turtle cheesecake I had tasted like chemicals once... HDH is disgusting. read more
