This time we needed sailing bibs for my wife because the weather was a real wet the first day of an event in Duck we were running. WE went in and really got no attention. Pretty weird, the woman behind the counter was talking a lot of semi jibberish and not making much sense and the old man behind the counter was not paying attention. I bet we shopped for about 5 to 10 minutes and really thankful I understand West Marine. I partially blame the end of season blues and they were very low on inventory probably for the same reason but really this was just ridiculous. I did find exactly what we were looking for with no help from the staff. All they did was ring up our $100+ sale. And the girl behind the counter continued to ignore us and talk loudly to herself about the store fixtures or layout or.. who knows. They WOULD NOT exchange the clearly defective fishing pole! Instead the worker who sold me the pole 1 hour prior accused me of getting sand in the reel! Lasted me an entire night of surf fishing and losing my shrimp to a bunch of bastard crabs too afraid to be dragged from the surf. They knew I'd Old Bay their asses because I hail from Baltimore. They just took the shrimp and ran for the hills...err, sand? Wherever crabs go. The staff didn't mind that I rudely showed up 5 minutes before they closed, and were super fast about ringing me up and getting me out the door so they could close this cool little shop up for the night. Tons of poles, reels, rigs, hooks, etc. Tons of bait choices, including live bait (like worms and minnows).

He loves the store and I can see why. It is well organized with carefully curated gear for those serious about their craft and the employees are friendly too. They also sell some gifty items. I finally made it to Mike Keller's myself, with my father in tow, and while we didn't need any boots, gloves, nets, hooks, or the such on this visit, I still enjoyed looking and we left with a few tshirts. My family is always happy to support this local small business. I also had my Mom with me this visit and we had fun looking at the gifts including crewel embroidered pillows with blue crabs and waiters on them and earrings from Lilliput Tiny Things (famously hand made in New Orleans). Commercial waterman can provide their license number for a tax free purchase. There is plenty of parking out front and this store is easily accessible off the main drag of Manteo.

Captain Jamie was very knowledgeable about the area wildlife and history. He provided an educational, interesting, and fun experience. He was the perfect captain for the trip. Talking on the headsets during the ride was fun too! We'll definitely do it again!
