They also have high end equipment for sale and rent. I ended up buying my Suunto D5 dive watch here that I can't stop wearing! I bought all my personal gear here and very happy with it. I have always rented the rest of the gear and they have worked great for me. You can tell that their equipment is well taken care of hence why I keep getting my gear from here. COURSES Michael was the instructor for all my courses and always went above and beyond to make sure you were confident and SAFE in the water. He answers any questions you have and you can tell he has a lot of knowledge and experience about diving that he shares. It was also nice to know that you were diving with a PRO/S. ADVANCED OPEN WATER The courses were always well organized from start to finish. You knew what you were doing for each hour of the day give and take some delays. This information was provided to you prior to the course as PDF. I did my advanced course at San Carlos Beach, Monterey. The day starts at 7 AM and by the time you get there, Michael and staff have already began setting up a big green tent that you cannot miss from the water. They even brought coolers full of food, snacks, and drinks! There are also scuba shops and restaurants within walking distance that you can get to. By 8 AM you are expected to be suited up and have already come up with a dive plan, which the instructor goes over with the group. This dive plan happened every time before every dive ensuring that everyone was in sync. When everyone is in the water, you gather at one spot on the surface and then we all descend together keeping the group together. This was the same when we were in the water, we were a school of divers following the instructors until we ascended. Of course during the navigation dive we were expected to navigate a square leading us back to our starting point with our dive buddy. This was a great learning experience. There was also an extra instructor that hovered around us which was nice. 2 instructors for 6 people. The five dives that we did were the performance buoyancy, deep dive, multi level, navigation, and fish identification dive. Overall it's always enjoyable diving with Michael and Harbor Dive staff and look forward to doing more dives with them. I would highly recommend to anyone!

My experience was even better the second time around! The assistance from Michael and Nina was great. They were knowledgeable and courteous. At the pool, the instructor was polite and proficient and helped me to get reacquainted with the gear and the basic skills that are necessary to know in order to dive safely. I enjoyed being in the water again so much, that after the class I went back to the shop and ask about fun dives and other possible classes. I spoke with Michael, and his passion for diving reminded me just how much I have missed it! I decided to sign up for the Advanced Open Water class for the following weekend before I left. In Monterey, conditions can be challenging but for me that is part of the fun. Michael was the Instructor for my Advanced class. It had been several years since I dove Monterey, so I was a little nervous. He was helpful, totally professional and patient. Monterey is not warm water diving like Mexico or the Bahamas, or even Hawaii. Safety is his Number 1 priority, so it is absolutely necessary to listen and follow all instructions and to ask for help if you need it. And... IT WAS AMAZING!!! Up next, Dry Suit certification!

Started with bagged lunches (deli sandwiches), about 25 people total in our large group (international colleagues from North/South America and Europe, minus Australia). Out of the five boats, the female captain was the race director for the day and we had to navigate the differently-colored buoys floating in the water. Not all of the boats were identical (make/model, size, age?) so there was an adjustment/differential to the final times, but all were generally recent model monohull sailboats 30-45 feet long. Grey Goose, Ry Whitt, Survivor, Liberty, and one other boat I can't recall the name of (might've been Attitude Adjustment) were our racing sailboats for the afternoon regatta, teams of 4-5. I was assigned to Liberty, a beautiful 38-foot Beneteau. Our US Coast Guard certified captain/skipper from Modern Sailing School was Bill and also served as our tactician; one of our guys took the driver role/steering to telltales, and another was in charge of the mainsail. Another took one side for the jib sail and I took the other side depending on if we needed to tack or jib (gybe), our fifth person assisted where needed with ropes/wench handles, etc. The weather was fine -- the fog lifted and the sun came out making for great views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco city skyline, the Bay Bridge, and Alcatraz. I'd done whitewater rafting and 2-person kayaking before, snorkeling and parasailing but this was my first time sailing! We had a little bit of time to practice and literally "learn the ropes" and fundamentals before the motor was turned off and the official race started at 1:00 PM. The two basic turning maneuvers/techniques with the skipper strategically navigating us through using the wind speed/direction (especially through Hurricane Gulch) and sea state/tides (smooth vs choppy water) was challenging but fun. Not only were we racing each other and trying to round our marks along the course, but there were of course other fishing boats, ferries, Hornblower cruise ships, windsurfers, and paddleboarders in the water too -- even saw a few seals! The race time on the water was around 2 hours for our team (keep in mind the boats were only traveling maybe 8 miles per hour) but lunch was included on land as well as an awards reception (beer/champagne, medals) for all of the teams afterward. We weren't first, but we weren't last either! If you're feeling "nauti" and the line where the sky meets the sea calls you, let your inner Moana/Maui try out wayfinding with the winds in your sails on the SF Bay at Modern Sailing School!

I purchased our tickets online a few days in advance (recommended for weekends and holidays), so arriving and loading the ferry was smooth and simple. We were also able to add the extra $1 fee per bike to be able to bring our bikes onboard for our planned bike ride around Angel Island. Once you're on the ferry, there's an area in the back with bike racks to place your bike. It can fill up fast so be sure to get there well before the ferry is set to leave. Once onboard, we went up to the top level and had the best views of the SF Bay, Tiburon, Golden Gate Bridge in the distance, Downtown SF, and Angel Island as we cruised across the bay on a very short 15-ish minute ride. All the staff were friendly and welcoming, and we had a great time going out to Angel Island and back. Highly recommend for a fun day trip! Pro tip: If you want to rent bikes for Angel Island, you can either rent in Tiburon at Demo Bikes or at the kiosk on Angel Island just steps away from the ferry landing.

We absolutely recommend CN for a steady journey of proper education and experiences getting certified with awesome qualified instructors. Having had no sailing experience or even interest prior, my friend convinced me to sign up with her and begin this journey of courses, tests and certifications to open doors to a future I never imagined. I had no reason to say no so we signed on and the excitement began. It took us almost a year but we are now BBC Certified and ready to travel! She has plans to continue to Coastal Passage Making and even Offshore Passage Making, while I am content with destination pleasure sailing :) Everyone in both offices and all of our instructors have been amazing in all aspects of their program.... communication, instruction, preparation, encouragement, and most importantly... safety! And the boats! We have been spoiled with the nicest boats in the bay! If you're shopping around for sailing programs trying to find the right club... this one is definitely the right choice. Thanks CN!

After extensive research and 22 years of sailing/powerboating in SF Bay, I can confidently say that…read moreClub Nautique is the premium place to charter a sailboat or powerboat.  The US Sailing Classes is a great format too for newer sailors and powerboaters.  My family and I have spent 60 days on the water in the last 12 months with CN and it's definitely a professionally-run operation. The best thing you will find is the fleet condition ... nowhere else will you be able to charter 1-3 year-old boats that are maintained, clean, and shiny.  Think electronic instruments, autopilot, climate control, powered winches (on the larger boats), and bluetooth audio systems inside and out.  The presentation and feeling of a premium charter is unparalleled.  The staff are serious about their jobs; the owners of the business treat boats and members with prompt, service-oriented action. As far as pricing goes, I've also been a part of other clubs in the SF Bay and CN is on the higher end for a reason.  The CN boats are nice and you won't be sailing on 20-year old boats with inoperable systems that are accepted as normal.  There is always fleet availability via an online booking system.  The community is great and getting like-minded crew or joining social events has been easy for my family. Other reviewers have complained about having to pay for expensive repairs and this is a good chance for an active CN member to tell it to you straight.  The boats are owned by fellow club members and if someone broke something on your boat, wouldn't you want it fixed too?  For new boaters, please be aware that everything on a boat costs way more than you think it does because most parts do not benefit from large economies of scale like the auto industry.  Things require individualized labor to repair and as any boat owner will tell you, it's never simple because ... it's a boat.  Sailing and powerboating is fun, but with it comes an associated spend. Both Sausalito and Alameda bases are excellent. Enjoy and be safe on the water.
