The Olympic Club Camp on Tomales Beach

Our group of 10 from the Olympic Club in SF rented several single and double kayaks for a weekend overnight camping trip in Tomales Bay. It was a wonderful experience thanks to the great weather, conditions and most of all the support and pre-paddle instruction from Brett, Max and Cooper at Tomales Bay Expeditions. We are already looking forward to returning next year for another overnighter and possibly a nighttime guided bioluminescence experience. Our club is known for our athletics and outdoor adventures, and this was one of our best so far.

Bioluminescence night tour was amazing!

Bioluminescence Night Tour review Location: right alongside an inn, with plenty parking. You paddle through multiple coves and cover about 5miles, loop. Our guide said the tours are tailored to increase likeness and visibility for the group. Guide: Cooper was amazing! A local with knowledge and experience that makes paddling with strangers fun. He was right there when others needed kayaking help and always gave us tips to see more of the glowing microorganisms. Bioluminescence: activated by movement and can be easy to overlook without guidance, once you see it- you can't undo the fascination their sparkle brings. Our arms were wet from leaning over to make direct contact and splash around, well worth it. Cloudy nights make for better viewing, less ambient light means more to see! Tip: stay at Cottages at Point Reyes, 1 minute drive away, for an easy commute to follow!

I visited this kayak shop for the first time and had such an incredible experience. Cooper was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and thoughtful throughout the entire process. He made everything feel approachable and safe, especially for a beginner like me. The gear was top-notch and worked perfectly, which made it easy to relax and just enjoy the adventure. The scenery was absolutely stunning -- pulling into quiet coves, exploring hidden spots, and seeing sea life up close. We spotted adorable otters, beautiful birds, and even jellyfish. It was peaceful, exciting, and honestly a little magical. If you're on the fence about trying this, do it. If you think you "can't," I promise you probably can. I'm plus-size and currently in physical therapy for a back issue, and I was still able to enjoy several hours out on the water comfortably. 100% recommend this business. I'll definitely be back.

So glad to find another Tomales Bay kayaking company and in a great In Inverness location. Cooper is a great host, and the kayaks are great. Looking forward to another paddle soon!

Bat ray.

I flakily started to reserve kayaks from here in advance of arrival but went IRL instead and am so glad I did as the crew we met are all so helpful and friendly. As bearish types we felt so welcomed and not at all shamed for asking about larger sized flotation devices, or for being queer. Only realised after that they were probably tired from all the early birds returning equipment, so I'm even more impressed with how great their service was. Anyway, we rented 2 kayaks at very reasonable prices for half a day compared to locally, and then were shown how to put them on our little car. It felt totally secure which gave us confidence they'd be fine on the return too. And off we went. The folks at Blue Waters recommended a beautiful area near Marconi on the east shore which was so perfect, thank you for that. We got to see the oyster farming there and plenty of incredible wildlife, like otters and jellyfish (see photo). Mostly it was just a great spot to paddle about in Tomales Bay getting some excellent peace and quiet. Checking the kayaks back in was super easy, although I wish I'd seen the 3 women who helped us initially to say thank you in person. They are who will keep me coming back to Blue Waters Kayaking in future. Such an excellent anniversary!

He was awesome at making us feel prepared and his sense of humor really helped everyone feel at ease. I was especially impressed of how he helped 2 guests who were clearly scared of the kayak flipping over during the tour, primarily by being a calm, patient guide. I would definitely go back to him! Overall, our group was blessed to be out there on an overcast night, which allowed us to see a lot of the bioluminescent silhouettes of fish that swam under and around us throughout the tour.

We were in the water by 8:45 today and the lower lot was full by the time we were ready to park for the day. Pretty crazy upper lot where people seem to squeeze in where they can amongst the eucalyptus trees. I needed to write a review because we had the worst sludgy mess of an experience at the end of our paddle today. There were boats to the left of the ramp as we were coming in so we went right. BAD MOVE! It was like sea quicksand. Smelly, sludgey, that wasn't quite mud but it wasn't normal shoreline either. My guy got sucked in to his thighs!!! Steer clear, when coming back from a paddle stay right and come up on the beach line and carry the boats up, worth it to avoid the mess. I saw what was happening to him and stayed right as much as I could and didn't get caught as bad but that whole right side of the launch ramp when facing the shore with Nick's Cove to your left us a nightmare. Trust me, lol. Otherwise, the water is AMAZING out there! Not too busy, plenty of books to explore, wildlife, just an incredible day on the water! We've done a bioluminescent tour at night before and in the right ambient light it's a great spot to catch the phenomenon.

Boaters can park overnight, which makes Miller an excellent access point for visitors seeking overnight camping or boating adventures in Tomales Bay (with a permit) and the surrounding Point Reyes seashore. (There is no camping at Miller.) Anglers can fish for striped bass, perch, rock fish, halibut, salmon, and crab. The dock and parking are accessible. Dogs are allowed on leash. Two gender neutral bathrooms are provided, but were very busy the weekend I was there. Plan ahead. Parking is $5/day (payable at a kiosk), but FREE on the first Saturday of the month thanks to Measure A. Alternatively, a free pass which hangs from your rear view mirror can be borrowed providing you have a library card from the Marin County Free Library which is easy and free to acquire if you are a CA resident. When the weather is good and the water is calm, expect parking on the lower level and upper level to be challenging. Waiting for someone to leave may take some time. During the Labor Day Weekend, fishermen were catching halibut, but unlucky fishermen caught nothing or bat rays or nurse sharks so make sure to not have a barbed hook. More experienced kayak fishermen were equipped with a red flag and told us that they caught their own bait first. If you head out to the ocean, there's a lot of eel grass that can jam up you pedals. Kayaking away from the ocean affords you a smoother ride.

The e-bikes were a blast to ride, but honestly, a huge part of what made the afternoon so enjoyable was the time we spent talking and getting to know James. James has an incredible wealth of knowledge about the Napa wine industry, and he was able to share so much interesting information along the way. But what really stood out was that his knowledge went far beyond wine. He was genuinely interesting to talk to, incredibly personable, and clearly someone who has a lot of experience and perspective on life. It felt less like we were simply on a guided bike tour and more like we were spending an afternoon with a great person who happened to know Napa incredibly well.
