Went out on the Bay Wolf today, with captain Ruby and crew Fallon. There were 10 of us in my party. We spread my wife's ashes in Kirby Cove, in the same spot where we spread my mother-in-law and father-in-law's ashes some years before. Ruby and Fallon were wonderful, showing a true love of the sea and answering our many questions about landmarks, currents and wildlife as we sailed out on the bay. Yesterday, we went out on the Osprey with Captain Mark and first mate Jimmy to scatter my mom's ashes. The boat was clean and spacious, there was room to move around, sit, and prep the ashes for scattering. Captain Mark and first mate Jimmy were very kind, helpful and considerate of our needs and requests. They picked the perfect spot just beyond the Golden Gate bridge for the scattering, and gave us plenty of time to say goodbye. The whole trip was exactly two hours as booked, everything was on time, and all the instructions were easy to follow. Sue answered my query quickly, and was always at the ready whenever I had changes to make or questions. Having never scattered ashes before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but Sue made everything easy, and on the day we went out on the Bay Wolf, Captain Efe and his assistant Zoe expertly guided us and made what could have been a somber day a very chill and celebratory one. Great communication in the lead-up as we managed a party including a 100-year old and a two-year old, planned a route/scattering spot, and then made contingency plans for a potentially difficult weather forecast (we got lucky in the end). On the day, the sailing was done expertly, we felt completely taken care of and could focus fully on saying goodbye to our loved one. From their website, there are 3-4 departure locations around the SF Bay. Someone always picked up the phone when I called between operating hours of 8am-6pm and very sympathetic. While the reason for our trip was extremely emotional and difficult, the experience my family and I had with Captain Kirk and crew was delightful. Even before our trip, I had a wonderful interaction with the company via email and telephone. Sue was so helpful and understanding of the whole situation. She answered all my questions and responded in a timely manner, I was very impressed. October is so beautiful in the Bay Area it was such a lovely day to be on the water. We were able to see seals hanging out and porpoises jumping out of the water and surrounding us all day, it was quite a surreal experience. We spent a few more hours out on the boat and although my family and I have spent a lot of time in the Bay Area, Captain Kirk has a wealth of interesting knowledge to share! They're personable and helpful; I was just so overwhelmed with how well they managed the entire day. I wish I could remember the name of the food catering place they ordered our sandwiches and fruit from because it was delicious! The strawberries were PERFECTLY ripe and the sandwiches were fresh and tasty. They even had veg options :) Wine was much needed and though they only serve white wine on the boat (which is probably a smart idea) and it was good even though I typically only drink reds. I cannot recommend Captain Kirk and Neptune Memorials enough. Neptune Memorials is awesome. Mom died last year without warning, and it was quite a shock to my family. Sure, she smoked three packs a day for over 60 years and didn't take care of herself, but other than that, she was in reasonable health. Her last wishes for her burial was to be cremated and given a burial at sea. Thankfully, she didn't say exactly where or when that should take place; my brother and I would have failed on both counts. We figured that given her lifestyle, her favorite resting place would have been in the pool at the Bellagio. Yeah, she was that kind of mom. Since that would have been tacky even for us, we decided to look at the coast. We found Neptune Memorials through a random search of sea burials. Since I'm from Sacramento, any coastal area would have sufficed, but Neptune Memorials seemed to be reasonably priced and had a choice of vessels. I don't think I've ever been sailing, so that wasn't much of a concern; to me if it floats, it's a boat. All boats are the same to someone as inexperienced as I was. I wasn't sure what to expect as I've never had to arrange a funeral before. Turnover is relatively low in my family, so it's not every day that I'm having to say goodbye to a loved one. We sailed out with Captain Doug and his crew member Dogen. They were very professional, attentive, and made my family welcome and at ease. They appeared to know exactly what they were doing (ie, we didn't die and they used nautical sounding terminology when speaking). My young children didn't truly understand what was happening, but they did have a great time, and both Doug and Dogen were able to patiently answer all their questions. The boat we sailed on, the "Bay Wolf" was a super nice sailboat, and we were told was designed to race between California and Hawaii. I'm not really sure what that means, but even apart from the burial and somber words we shared, we had a lot of fun. My brother and I joked that we can't wait for the next family member to die! We went to Honor my 93 year old Moms last wishes and dispersed her ashes in the San Francisco Bay. Captain Kirk and his crew, Greg, made the experience perfect! They were able to give us pointers as to where exactly to disperse the ashes and helped with the proper way to disperse the ashes so as to not get them blown back in the face!
