You can't see the Ocean but this course is the Augusta National of Norfolk. It has the bones to be Augusta National. It's not as nice as Augusta National, but you could definitely call it Norfolk National.

I wish I could give this course a 4 or 5 because it is a cute course and the price for a round of 9 is under $30, which is always a bonus when you are visiting from out of town, and you would like to play a quick round. However, our experience was less than pleasant. The day started out well. It was busy and we were placed on hold before we could start our tee time because the course was running slow and previous tee times hadn't even teed off. We were not the fastest group but by far not the slowest. When asked to play through we politely allowed the group behind us to play through. When we got to the 8th tee, we tee'd off and proceeded to hop in our carts. That's when Andy Giles, the PGA master of the course/course marshall, started to yell at us and told us to move it. We weren't being obnoxious or socializing just enjoy our time. We just respond ok we are. At the next hole, he came up to us again and started to yell at us that we need to move it. That we should be standing by each of our balls waiting to hit. Which we proceed to tell him that there is no way we will stand in front of any balls while someone is hitting. It is not safe. He continued to yell at us and told us that we were breaking every rule and golf etiquette. Which, I am no amateur, I have played on several course and ones that are much nicer than this one, who have actually hosted PGA tournaments. Myself and my group are very aware of the etiquettes and rules of the game. I understand that there are people who are new and don't understand the rules and etiquette and that is when you politely come up, ask them to speed up and help them find ways to make their game faster. When I came up to the club house to complain about the harassment that we just received. He was in the club house and said he was the owner and the highest we could speak to. So we continued to tell him that we didn't break any rules, we allowed people to play through because our group was having a bad game, and how when he yelled at us there was no one on our heels. That his professionalism needed improvement and how he treated us was uncalled for. He continued to yell at us that we were breaking PGA rules and etiquette by taking two hits off the tee. Which I did, after my first ball went into the woods and I knew I couldn't find it. This didn't happen at every hole and PGA etiquette does say this is allowed. When I got frustrated, I did say are you f***ing kidding me, after continuously being insulted and that's when he proceeded to bark at his employee to call the cops. Not my best wording to use but the guy behind me who said the f-word was allowed to, but a "young lady" shouldn't say those words and warranted a call to the cops. I was shocked! His behavior was unacceptable and turned what was a fun day, into a bad one. I will never return to this course and don't recommend it to anyone.

I'll be honest. Three stars is a bit much but there is a lot of history here. After all, this is my home golf course. My home away from home. I still have many friends that play there and we still have a riot together even though I've moved on in my golf life. I used to work there years and years ago. I'd sweep the cart barn, vacuum the restaurant and clean the carts so I play free golf and gamble with the $35 I made cleaning golf clubs. Tiger Woods once stepped foot on this course and gave me a personal golf lesson. The write up still shows up on Google searches. So I came here the other day for a friendly afternoon match. Rates were good. I had a free pass but my buddies only payed $16 for all that we can play. I think typical rates are $20 after 5pm. The greens make the biggest difference with any golf course and unfortunately it was like putting your golf ball through a plinko board (It didn't stop my partner and me. We still shot five under par through 12 holes. Yours truly made four birdies and I had a three putt par.) I wasn't surprised with the condition of the course overall but then again when you come back "home" once or twice a year it sucks to see you track the way it is. Aside that the course was just like it always is. The regulars are there. My buddy is still cleaning the golf carts. The group that I used to roll with still has their afternoon matches. For golfers this is a locals hangout. The history that I have here gives this place the extra star. I go back there for the people. Greens make a difference but I'm no professional so does it really matter? I enjoy the camaraderie more than anything. Great place if you're new to golf. Even better for kids.

Golfed 18 holes here for 25 dollars yesterday afternoon. Starter and pro shop were both very nice and accommodating. The course was relatively empty and those that were ahead of me, let me play through (I was a single on vacation from New York). As for the course itself, definitely a bit on the short side, but I loved the layout. The front is 36 and the back is 34 for a par of 70. I never landed in a bunker, but they were always there on an approach shot and the water comes into play if you let it get in your head. I actually cleared the water in a short par 3 only to catch the slope of a hill and roll down into the pond. A few of the greens had those long slopes along side that you had to watch out for. No real penalty for being left or right off the tee except for a few water spots and maybe getting caught behind a tree(although I played to the green from off the fairway a LOT). The only knock on the course is the greens are definitely a bit rough and sandy, but they roll pretty well for their appearance. I definitely felt robbed a few times out there when a putt that would've rolled in back in Long Island came up short because of the sand. Either way, I shot an 86 (which is good for me) and had a relaxing time out there. For 25 bucks, would definitely play again!

One of the nicer courses in Norfolk. If the greens weren't in such terrible shape this course would be an easy 4 star location. Maybe it's just because when I played today we've had a few weeks of hot weather with no rain. Every other part of the course is kept up very well. They keep the water stations full of ice cold water, and it's nice to have actual restrooms on the course with working toilets and running water, not just outhouses. As far as the play goes. It's pretty short overall, but the short par 3 and 4 holes have treacherous greens surrounded by hazards so that makes it a little more challenging. Good rates and nice staff as well.

So sad .. I love it here. The course is in Bad shape. No grass on 90% of greens. Practice putting green. ...no grass just sand.

Golf is my new thing…read more I got some golf clubs and shoes for Christmas. My clubs are in a super cute purple and black bag. I've played twice before - once here and the other time at a range out close to Smithfield. I'd like to step my game up and actually hit the ball more than I ruin the green. Getting to the point, Riverfront is a beautiful course. I'm somewhat afraid of hitting a house from the course......eh, who am I kidding, I can't hit the ball that hard and far anyway ;). I've been to the driving range once, on our second visit, they were closed. Bummer. I do like that you drive off the grass and not mats. Lastly, this might be common sense to the golf pros out there, but its important to note that you have to have a collared shirt and cannot wear jeans on the driving range.

About myself: Play Riverfront anywhere from 4-5 times per month. Not a member but often play with…read moremembers. Pros: Riverfront is typically in good shape. For a course south of the Hampton Roads tunnels, Riverfront is usually a good bet that you will have decent tee box, good greens (with some exceptions), and clean fairways. Staff are generally friendly. Cons: Grounds crew is oblivious to the players. Typically find them with headphones on and unaware of their surroundings. Always have a problem with bunkers, bunkers are rarely raked and players don't do the course any favors by cleaning bunkers after use. Expect high load of divot marks on the greens. Normal to have to fix divot marks before a putt. If you are off the fairway, come to expect to have to hit off unmaintained areas (dirt, pine straw or debris). Maintenance ends at the fairway, rough is typically cut similar to fairway. If there is any rain the night before and you have an early tee time, expect no range as it is often closed. Unacceptable: The manager (Brian) is unfriendly and unloyal. How he maintains his job is not understood by members and players that know the staff. Example: Today I witnessed (why I decided to write a review) a twosome that went out for the first tee time (7 AM). Within the twosome were myself and a member of 5+ years that plays golf at Riverfront upwards of 4 times a week. We were provided awareness that a tournament would be going out at 8:30 and that it was starting on the back nine and stretched to hole 12. No additional direction was given. We reached hole 16 and ran into the tournament beginning play. Unfortunately, we folded in between the tournament groups and tee'd off on 16. We were met at our ball by a marshal. The marshal stated we needed to wait until the entire tournament went through before we picked up our play again....so other words wait 1.5-2 hrs for the entire tournament to go through. We let the marshal know that was unrealistic and that we would be able to fold into the group, finish our two holes and not hold anyone up. The marshal was favorable to that course of action, but the pro shop returned with an answer of we would shut down the cart until they leave. We finished 16 and then headed into the pro shop. Going into the pro shop the member requested a 9-hole rain check believing that was a good compromise to an unfortunate situation. He was offered by Brian, $5. Considering the long wait, we would have had to finish our round, the poor management of tee times (there was a twosome behind us) and the fact we were unable to finish our round that we paid for, we thought this was a good compromise. Brian disagreed to the point he ended up refunding the member over $800 for the remainder of his membership at the club. So, a long-term member, who spends over $500 a month additional at the course, and the upwards of $400 I spend at the course a month were not worth a nine-hole rain check due to an inconvenience on both the course and ourselves. In closing: I am sure this review will be met with the same professionalism and loyalty as presented today. Unfortunately, this professionalism is normal for management. If you want a decent course to play and have to stick south of the tunnel, no doubt Riverfront is worth the time. Do not expect you to be at the forefront of the management's concerns. Customers at Riverfront are not always right!

But this top golf experience was a little bit different, yeah of course not perfect especially because the tables were sticky and quite dirty so that was unpleasant, and our bayhost was alright but it felt a little like she was annoyed of us so it kind of ruined the mood, but the server who brought us our food honestly made the whole experience reach the 4 stars! He was a really nice, funny, pleasant, well mannered young gentleman. He brought us the food and actually took some time explaining everything and made genuine conversations, making jokes and being extremely friendly, not only with me but my whole family, he was also extremely fast and understanding and got us everything we needed even though I'm sure he was busy and had things to do! I usually don't write reviews regarding servers but this young man named Jamari really stood out, it truly feels really nice when someone who's a server takes out time from they're day to be genuine and have a conversation, and it really sets the mood for the rest of the experience you have. Especially not knowing how that can change someone's whole day. So all I have to say my family's experience was really made great because of the nice young man Jamari, each top golf deserves an employee like him! And Thank you Top Golf for hosting us all the way in Virginia!!

Affordable cost @ $25 per golfer (included 18 holes and cart use) obviously helped the fundraising bottom-line. Fairways, greens and cart paths were in acceptable shape for that price point. While out of their control, know there are times players are prepping to swing while next to chain-linked fences with obnoxious barking dogs. There are also points where you're sharing roads/travel paths with local traffic, similar to other public courses. Facilities are notably dated but the spaces we occupied were relatively clean. There's a small practice green and driving range on-site. It was super easy working with their golf-pro Adam to coordinate the play aspect; he was thorough and accommodating with any needs that arose. Unfortunately, requiring events to use in-house food/beverage vendors that lack communication and execution became a perennial drawback. Inflated cost is expected because of the convenience factor. That said, limited selection coupled with poor service and delivery ($50 for a small plate of store bough chips-a-hoy cookies) is inexcusable. I had to send out search parties in multiple years for the contracted beverage cart employee on days seeing 85-90 degree temps. I wanted to sit outside on their patio to reflect, watching the players coming in, and enjoying a cold IPA. This day was a bit chilly and couldn't stay out there long however, the time I did have was lovely reminding me of how cool of a club house it is on top of a wonderful golf course I really enjoyed playing. Pound for Pound (without being able to play on private courses), this one is probably my favorite to play in the area. I do feel the clubhouse is a bit outdated but it does capture the essence of a true "golfclub" vibe you would expect from a traditional club. You clearly see the local members enjoying their time for lunch or turning the nine. I have tried a few items as far as food and wouldn't say it's amazing. it does the trick for fuel but nothing over the top. Haven't tried dinner so I can't speak on that but they do have a full bar. Of course it is on the pricy side as usual for clubhouses but it wasn't terrible. The pro shop did have a goof feel to it and layout with lots of items you could purchase. Overall, I love the golf course and facility that is kept in good shape however I do feel the clubhouse and vibe, although traditional in nature, could use a little "sprucing up" as it does feel dated but... a lot of times, that is what traditional golfers want to remember and not change up. If you like that vibe with the wood lockers, dark green, traditional vibe, this place is perfect. As far as the golf course, condition, and layout, this is a must try course if you haven't. Prices are much more reasonable after a certain time but witih all courses and prices, you are going to pay no matter where you go unfortunatley.
