I flew to California to visit my family in mid-March, 2014. My baby sister and I decided to check out Venice Beach one day since I had never been there. While there, we decided it would be fun to get matching tattoos, since although we are 13 years apart in age, we have the same birthday! What a wonderful thing to commemorate, and it should have been a bonding experience between sisters. We figured we didn't want to just walk into some random shop that we knew nothing about, so we whipped out our smart phones and checked out reviews online. Ocean Front Tattoo seemed to have the most positive reviews, in fact, I didn't see a single negative, so we felt fairly confident that we would get good work done there and headed to their shop. Unfortunately, my experience was less than stellar. We told the gentleman at the front counter what we wanted, which was a small (about the size of a silver dollar, maybe slightly bigger) tattoo of the gemini symbol and our birth date in small numbers next to it. No problem right? We both have far more complicated tattoos that we are perfectly happy with. They made up the design quickly from a symbol we found online and a photoshop font we picked out for the numbers. I volunteered to start mine first, being the brave older sister that I am, and I should have known better, though I wouldn't have wanted my sweet baby sister to have to go through the experience that I did. My tattoo "artist" was Jose. Putting it nicely, he was less than friendly, and definitely not professional. The first time he placed the stencil, it seemed like it was a bit too far to one side and i wanted it in the middle of the inside of my right wrist. So I asked if we could redo the stencil slightly closer to the middle and a tad bit smaller. Boy he acted like I peed in his coco puffs or something. So, he made another guy print it up again, and he placed a slightly smaller version basically in the same place he put it before. I looked at it, and as nicely and sheepishly as I could, told him that it didn't look centered to me still. I mean, you don't want to piss off the guy who is going to permanently ink you in a couple minutes right? TOO LATE... he made dude print another one, and this time made me place it, even though I'm obviously not the expert, but I did it anyway, and just decided that was my last chance so I went with it. Like I said before, the tattoo isn't that big, nor is it very complicated, and it is just plain black. I don't know if he did a terrible job on purpose because he was irritated with me for being too "picky" (i mean, it's somewhat permanent right, shouldn't I be a bit picky???), or if he is just a terrible artist, but I'm less than pleased with the result. I have never had any issues with previous tattoos, and this one is going to need some major touch ups. It basically looks like a 5 year old filled it in with a broken crayon. The lines are ok, but the fill in with the black is basically only half done. So on top of the $80 I paid for being summarily ignored through the entire tattoo process and treated like some spoiled princess, now I get to go spend more money to have it fixed somewhere else. It seems like everyone else gets good reviews at this place, so my basic advice is, if you decide to patronize this place, make sure to avoid Jose like the bubonic plague. read more

Just got my nose pierced here and am very satisfied! Don't be turned off by the fact that this is right on the crazy Venice Beach walkway. The entrance is wide open but the inside is very clean. I didn't have an appointment, just walked in after a couple of Yelp searches for good piercing parlors in my area. The staff was kind and welcoming. The guy who did the piercing answered all my questions in detail and I felt very comfortable with him. He's been doing piercings for 15 or 17 years I believe. All in all a very solid place. read more

I was on vacation with a friend and we had been talking about getting tattoos so we looked up some places. Ocean front tattoos look the most legit. We came in as walk in and the person helping us figure out where we wanted our tattoos, size, and font was very nice and helpful. My tattoo I chose to get was a lyric from one of my favorite artists and has lots of meaning to me. The lyric was 12 words and we were having a hard time finding a size that wasn't to big but also wasn't to small. We finally figured it out I got the stencil on my shoulder laid down and got the tattoo. I kid you not it was only five minutes long and I couldn't be more disappointed with a tattoo. First I was totally shocked on how quick it was considering my friend got one with four words and hers took longer then mine. Second when I got home and it healed there where lines in the letters, some letters were already faded, and some letters were so close it's hard to read. I was so disappointed because we took maybe 30 min to figure this all out so none of this would happen and the artist still did a poor job. I unfortunately can't remember the artists name. Oh also they charged me $300 dollars for a quote that was 12 words long, and it turned out shitty. All I have to say is do lots and lots of research before walking into a tattoo parlor. Thank god that I absolutely love the quote other wise I would definitely be thinking of a cover up. I will never recommend this place to anyone who wants a decent tattoo. read more

first came across ocean front tattoo at the body art expo in Pomona this past weekend (7/15/2016). I was looking to add to an existing poly tribal piece i had done by a previous style and was actually going to speak to a different artist at the expo. After talking to the other artist i wasn't quite sure if I wanted to get it done. I happened to come across the booth and stopped by to get some info. I was impressed with his work and how chill and honest MikeyP was that I immediately set an appointment for the following day. Mikey was great and listened to what I wanted and took the time to draw it on and show me the design before we began. Mikey is a great artist and excellent person! I will be finishing the tattoo down at the shop and will continue to comeback to Mikey as I continue to add to my poly sleeve little by little! oh and also met the owner and he is super chill! look forward to getting more work done at ocean front tattoo. read more

It's the cleanest shop I've ever been to, won't go anywhere else even though I live in the Valley.

First of all this place is filled with great stuff to look at. The art, the people coming in and out, the strange chachkies everywhere. I felt right at home when I got my biggest tattoo yet last April. If you want something drawn up and would like it to be more of a collaborative thing, seek out Isaac. This guy knows what he's doing. I wanted something very particular on my ankle and he was cool with drawing it several times to get it just right. Then he got my feedback on mixing the shade of ink. It was so refreshing to feel like what I want matters! I'm an illustrator, and a perfectionist at that, so naturally, I'm admittedly really picky about how things look. (Especially permanent things.) I was able to let Isaac do his thing, trust, and relax. He gets it. I think my future tattoos will have to be here. The line work is beautiful and clean and the art looks better than I ever imagined before it was drawn up. On my second tattoo he already knew what I was going for and it was perfect on the first design. All the artists I've encountered here are all really friendly and accommodating and I've enjoyed meeting their customers as well! Go here if you want a great experience. Ocean Front Tattoo is the only place that I would go to get a tattoo on Venice Beach. I am from outside the Washington D.C. area in Virginia and am out in LA for the next four years for school. I have had the idea of getting my nationalities of American Australian and British in some way but wasnt sure how to make it work. I walked all up and down the boardwalk looking at different places and Ocean Front was the only place that really stuck out. All of the guys are extremely friendly, professional, and talented. Isaac works on the weekends and I have done 3 out of my 4 sessions, round 11 hours and I couldn't be happier! Even though he only works on the weekends I was able to watch all of the other artists doing different pieces for other customers and they always blew me away. I highly recommend this tattoo shop if your looking to have good times, make new friends and get an incredible piece of art put on your body! read more

This is the first place I got my first tattoo. I Felt so welcomed and at ease (first time tattoo a little scared) everyone in the shop was so friendly and kind!! The owner's wife I believe her name is Lucy held my hand and talked to me the entire time to distract me from the pain. I thought That was just the kindness thing to do. Since then I have returned several times and have recommend them to everyone I know. All my friends have had the same awesome experience here as well. I have been going to Myke to get pierced for 9 years, and I will NEVER get pierced by anyone else. From my first belly button piercing 9 years ago, to my recent nose piercing, nothing has changed about the way Myke conducts his business. He is always available, and willing to answer any questions you might have/calm your nerves. He takes his time; doesn't matter who is in the shop, how busy it is or how many people are waiting, he makes sure that you are going to leave a happy customer, and will give you all the time you need. I have been pierced by Myke 9 times, and my sister a handful times, and we have never had any problems with any of the piercings. I am highly allergic to most jewelry, but Myke uses "surgical stainless steel", and I have never had a problem with it. The one piercing I played with a little too much got a little irritated, I called Myke, he told me to clean it and stop playing with it, and that if there were any other problems I could come in. A few days later all was better. There's always a lot going on in the shop, but everything is very sanitary, and everything Myke uses is sterile and packaged, as he opens it in front of you. You can tell these guys are all friends. I have seen the same guys together over the years, which makes me feel much more comfortable in going back again and again. If you are looking for somewhere to get pierced Ocean Front Tattoo is the place to go, just ask for Myke and he'll take amazing care of you! Have fun! read more

Let me start this by stating that in no way was I payed for this review to write or am I an employee. My name is Dustin k. My experience with ocean front tattoo was the most reassuring tattoo experience I've ever had. From the beginning I was greeted with a warm and caring smile from the lady behind the counter. I was introduced to Mikey, this guy was the most real and no ego or no judgement type of guy which is really refreshing when most encounters with tattoo artist are that they act like your doing them a favor by coming to get tattooed or just down right try to act intimidating and rude. Me and Mikey found the right portrait and I could tell he was definitely interested in doing this piece, and later found out by his boss how he was hoping that he would be able to work on this for me! A couple of weeks gone by, and when I returned to get tattooed the manager and owner was completely hospitable and gracious from the freaking beginning. I almost forgot I was in LA and back home in the south by the hospitality of the owner Mike. We started tattooing at 2pm. Mikey was all in. We communicated what I wanted and what to expect. It felt as though he was lightly painting a portrait on my arm. We had an 8 hr session. He is definitely my new "tattoo guy", honest, a hard worker and most importantly extremely freaking talented (and I'm notorious for walking out on tattoo artist whose work sucks when flipping through their pictures of work done).
