The crab meat was like a paste. I was embarrassed to have started serving them. 3 of them were opened and discarded, the rest were put in the freezer to be returned. Upon returning to Samtass to ask for a refund, they would only refund the weight of the remaining crabs instead of refunding the amount shown on the receipt. They then told me to call the office to speak to Tony, the manager, which I did. I left a message with the office for Tony to call back and have received no response. I now regret spending over $1k with them this Christmas and will be taking my business elsewhere and sharing this experience with others.

Their simple approach to restauranteering works in their favour, letting the food speak for itself and saving the customer from the bullshit. The menu consists mainly of fish and chip style dishes. Though simple, Paul's does each dish magnificently, taking the philosophy of "less is more" to heart. The fish and shellfish is fresh and well-prepared and always satisfying. My favourite dish has to be the spicy crumbed prawns - crunchy deep fried prawns with a lot of kick, and they never disappoint. For such a simple dish, I've never had better prawns anywhere else in Australia - and that's saying a lot considering the great seafood available in this country. The interior decor is simple and even a little out-dated - but I feel that this only adds to the restaurant's traditional fish-shop feel. The upstairs balcony area is perfect for balmy summer nights, and complimenting a plate of fish and chips with a nice cold beer makes for excellent dining.

The place has a really good atmosphere - they've managed to keep it down-to-earth and unassuming, but produce excellent dishes. The rawness (in terms of flavour) of each dish makes the whole experience more organic and real. You just want good seafood, and Paul's provides just that. There's a nice balcony sitting area upstairs, which is great for hanging out in summer. The place gets pretty busy, which is always a good sign.

Always busy, and often with groups, the dinner is good tasting, straight-up italian food. Mid morning and Mid arvos are always busy with friends catching up over a good coffee and often a cake (and the range is great). A bit of a generic big Italian restaurant, VaBene is doing really well here and creates a good atmosphere for very reasonable prices for their guests.

The chips are way up on the chip quality scale and the seafood is as fresh as the salads. It's not a franchise, so there's no regulation two slices of tomato per burger etc. Quality control is by the pride of a well-run family owned business. The prices are reasonable too, especially considering the tasty freshness of the salad ingredients. I honestly can't think of a bad word to say about this place, except that it shuts a bit early - 8.30pm most days. Parking's a snip - straight out the front. It's sort of around the corner at the Gilles Plains shopping centre on North East Road.

There isn't much more I can say about this place other than how I felt it was completely average. The prices were a little on the higher end (which is, of course, to be expected), the servers are 50/50 (you may get one who hates their job and seems reluctant to serve you, but you also may get one who loves interacting with people), and the food is pretty average. A lot of these places will make a yiros with greasy meat, wilted greens and not really take much care with it as it's all getting wrapped up anyway. I got the exact opposite. As I said it was a pleasant surprise.
