Just as Jeff has mentioned, Hurdman Station is one of the busier bus stations in Ottawa. It…read moreshouldn't come to any surprise because it's right in the centre of the city. You can take a bus to any end of the city at Hurdman Station. For example, you can take a 95 to Orleans (east end), 96 to kanata (west end), or a 97 to the airport (south end). There were times when I would be going home after work and the buses were so full that I had to wait for the next bus. At least in the winter, they have heated shelters. I debated giving it 4 stars but choose 3 stars. Yes, it's busy but you can travel to almost anywhere in the city. I would have given it 4 stars if you could have purchased your bus passes here or been attached to a mall. For example the Orleans bus station is attached to the mall and you can buy your bus passes here.

It's not uncoming for riders to sprint through the station to make their connection. The station is located near the intersection of Industrial Avenue and Riverside Drive/Vanier Parkway. Great spot for cyclists, as the station is near the Rideau River bicycle path. There is a small convenience store within the station, with an ATM that my bank doesn't trust. There is a hidden kiss and ride drop-off spot if you are driving southbound on Riverside drive, just past the Riviera building. You should be able to see it on the yelp map.

So I recently took the O-Train for the first time ever (despite living in Ottawa for over a…read moredecade). It's similar to the TTC Subway in Toronto and the STM Metro in Montreal except there's only 1 route and it's relatively short, and you're above ground for most of the time and only underground briefly instead of the opposite in the two other cities. Since Bayview is one of the end points the train sits there for a while and the doors are closed. There is a button that you have to press to open the doors. This is different than all other trains I've used where the doors are controlled by train staff, not passengers. You also have to press a button to open the door when you disembark. The train itself is not dissimilar from subway or metro trains. Bayview station is currently under construction due to the building of the LRT (Light Rail Transport), so it's a bit of a mess. When you transfer from bus to O-Train or vice versa you have to walk around a detour path that is circuitous and a bit creepy, especially at night. Hopefully once the construction is over, the transfer points will be more direct.

There are definite plans for expansion, but for now, Ottawa's O-Train runs north to south. It can…read moreget quite packed, but it can also be really, really convenient. I used it ALL the time when I was a student at Carleton and wanted to go to Loblaws for grocery shopping or visit other stores in the South Keys plaza. A friend of mine had a yearly bus pass and even went as far as riding the train in between classes or while she was waiting for something or someone in the winter, since the train has heating. What a way to waste time while abusing the system haha eeps! The ride is fast and smooth, and if you have a bus transfer or pass, you can hop right on the O-Train without having to pay an additional fare. Sometimes the ticket machines are out of order, which can be annoying, but will save you $2.75. I remember the fare only being $2 when I started university in 2004, so it hasn't really increased very much in the last six years. Even if it's only a couple bucks, though, make sure you pay the fare or have some kind of proof of payment, since officers will check often and I've seen people get caught and fined pretty hard for not having a transfer or pass.

Today on the 400 in Ottawa at around 6:30pm I witnessed a driver not letting a young man on the bus because he was using an OCtranspo transfer. He held the bus up for everyone because he was on a power trip. Another sad man using any little power he can get to take out on others. From my understanding and from the fact I have been taking busses in both cities for decades, they must accept OC Transpo transfers and vice versa. I have never had an issue using an Ottawa transfer. OCtranspo might also be a garbage service, but at least they're sometimes kinder to people. I have had an STO driver scream in my face when I told her that I lost my transfer running for the bus and needed help getting to work. I was only going a couple stops across the bridge to Ottawa and she thought it was appropriate to scream so loud she was essentially spitting in my face. This needs to be investigated and dealt with because apparently this is a common complaint I am hearing and I shouldn't be personally witnessing this so frequently.

Exiting the 96 gives you easy access to the Cinema and restaurants close by, and then of course the rest of the mall. Be careful, though! Apparently there are 3 different routes for the OC Transpo 96 route, and only 1 of those comes here. At least 1 of the other 2 services Stittsville. So if the front of the bus does not indicate "Terry Fox", be sure to check with the driver first if this is where you intend to go. On the other hand, I wish OC Transpo serviced the west end better; and by this I mean the TRUE West End: Kanata, Stittsville, and Carp were incorporated into the city of Ottawa a number of years ago now. There is no bus service that I am aware of in Carp. I have to catch the Stittsville bus going down town. Don't get me wrong: I'm so glad that I can at least to that much! I guess I got spoiled when we lived in Kanata over 10 years ago, and the bus passed the front of my house, or the next one was an easy walk away!
