Checking in was very easy and the front desk staff was extremely friendly and hospitable. They made sure to give us a lot of information and made it easy to book breakfasts in the morning (which even though it came with our room, we only ate 1 out of the 2 times). Breakfast is good but they don't replenish the continental portion if you come later in the day, FYI. The room was gorgeous and fairly clean, with the exception of a few details. I think it's odd hotels don't clean the top décor blanket on the bed. I had to strip that immediately as there was what looked to be pepperoni pizza mushed into it. Very large and noticeable by the way. The drapes were also covered in schmutz, so the luxury level kind of drops when you see things like this. We got a junior suite and the room was very large with an incredible view of the harbor. I mean the view alone was worth the money. The bathroom however, was not large. All the reviews I read said the bathrooms are big and great. Mine was not. It was cramped and the door to the shower made no sense at all. My 5'2" 120 pound mother would have a hard time entering this shower. It feels super gross to wash yourself and then have to rub your body against a wall to get out of the shower. Also, another thing people really seem to fail to mention is that this hotel had NO air conditioning. I read a lot of reviews before I stay at a place and was shocked that people don't mention it. There is a small fan in the closet though and you can get ice from the bar to makeshift your own a/c.

No response for literally 5 months. They responded finally and said that was fine. There was an additional charge-we understood that. They did not ask for payment. Now we are there, literally in Oban the day before our tour. We were supposed to get details about the trip emailed to us, including our ferry tickets. Nothing. We went to the store front (after a days drive to get there). It was closed. Now what? We got up early and walked in the rain to go to the shop. The person behind the counter said "oh ya, I know about that one." We had emailed them asking what the status was-again no response. They hadn't sent us the email because we owed them the balance. Could they not have contacted us to share that info? We live in the US, so calling would have been very expensive. We paid the balance and ran to get on the boat. Better communication please! The tour itself was lovely, but it was stressful in the planning stages.

You couldn't get staff any nicer here, I've always found them very helpful and polite, the office is ideally located at the sea front where all the shops are, and only a few minutes walk to the ferry terminal. When we arrived in Mallaig for our ferry they told us they had cancelled it and booked us on one 4 hours later, yet never told us (they claimed they sent an email, but based on the number of others arriving to the same surprise, we were clearly not the only ones who received no such email). That required backtracking more than an hour to Fort William and then 90 more minutes beyond that to the Skye bridge. Plans for the day completely disrupted because of this company's failure to serve its customers.

It's high season so the ferries were packed and seats filled up quickly but the ride was smooth and embarking and disembarking were both fairly quick and easy. The bus ride across Mull was enjoyable, the scenery was spectacular and watching Richard and everyone else navigate the single lane road was fascinating. The return trip in the afternoon was just as interesting except I fell asleep in the middle of the bus ride. This was the best way to see the islands and we would love to return and visit again. The CalMac ferry has a restaurant and bar, as well as a video game room and a small shop. Or you can just sit and enjoy the scenery or people watch. It's a 45-50 min ferry ride from Oban to Mull. The bus ride across Mull is also 45 mins but it feels shorter if you have an entertaining driver. The ferry from Mull to Iona is only 5-10 mins long. Ferries depart every few mins so you never have to wait long for one. It's safe, organized and as long as you listen to the announcements and follow instructions, the process is flawless.

Even more so that in apparently the last 3 years no real improvements have been made. The Caledonian Hotel Lounge & Restaurant looks weathered, faded. The interior is reminiscent of the late 80's and has seen far too much sun. Unless that is the look they were going for. Oban is a nice sea side town and billed as "The Seafood Capital of Scotland" -As I am allergic to fish I needed a reasonable place to eat to avoid issues. As this hotel is smack bang on the harbour near the train station and the ferry port, one could easily be mistaken that they would at least provide a decent enough meal not containing or cross contaminate fish with other food substances. No this review is not about experiencing any allergy issues. I did not. The above is to clarify why I chose this hotel as a lunch venue. Which is mainly because it was serving something else than fish and was prominently located. Also the prices looked very reasonable for an hotel. (Yes, that should have rung bells, but really look around the Oban and you'll know where I am coming from) So they get 1 star for location. For my lunch I requested the Gammon & Pineapple and Chips, Something I normally wouldn't, but from everything else that was available it sounded the nicest. They did asked how I liked my gammon to be cooked, but they may as well have not bothered. Dry & Bland. The gammon was dry, the salad was dry too and the pineapple was even dryer. Come on?! Dry salad and pineapple? They are supposed to inject some juice and freshness to an otherwise heavy slab of meat. Not in this restaurant. The chips were the rustic variety from Iceland basic range. - I am not bothered reviewing those. Besides being dry there was no flavouring to be found. What is it with food in this part of Scotland? Why can't I have a full flavoured meal? I actually ended up doing what I despise anyone doing in restaurants: I smothered the most of the plate in ketchup. Then used the pepper and salt in such a way that the WHO may have to set a new health warning level.. Not impressed with this. I wasn't expecting anything outstanding, but certainly wasn't not expecting this level of food delivery. I wasn't overly impressed with the staff either, I guess efficiency is a hard to come by trait, but they were friendly and happy to help. We even saw a girl waitress chasing down a customer as she left her coat when leaving. 1 star for good effort. Some other little things were nudging the star rating down. Credit Card machine not working. Menus dirty and torn. I was advised by a fellow diner that the hand dryer in her toilet wasn't not working and no towels available. In all a truly forgettable dinner, by any standard.

In many cases you walk by, admire from a far, take a picture and move on. Well, this wasn't the case. Mackays Guest House, right in the heart of Oban picturesque waterfront. A beautiful property run by Iona Mackechnie who was the sweetest and loving soul. A warm Scottish smile greeted us upon arrival. Checking in was quite a breeze. Once inside, the foyer with its soothing calm beachy vibe and tartan pattern. Beautiful cool tones on the walls and throughout the property. We had room number 1 which was one of the ones downstairs. Once you walk in, it's pretty massive and spacious. Modern vibe with its cleans line and cool color palettes perfectly suitable for the sea. Nice comfortable bed awaits you as well as two plush comfortable sling back chairs with the million dollar view of the waterfront. Heater fireplace in front of the bed for those chilly nights which is a given. As well as the flatscreen television above. You also have your en-suite which is nice as a lot of places don't offer them. It's pretty spacious with plenty of room for sharing. Walk in shower, all your toiletries offered. To top it off, the warm Scottish welcome of their traditional drink the irn-brn soda and tea cakes were on the dresser. What a sweet little welcome treat. Location is just minutes from the beach. Walking distance from the main town where plenty of restaurants and shops are. The ferry and train station. There's parking available right in front but based on first come. Street parking also available along the front but not quite sure what the restrictions are. Mackays Guest House is a must if you're looking for a quaint weekend getaway or for a longer stay for that nice R&R break.
