The Glencoe Visitor Centre was a nice change of pace from the cultural sites that I had been seeing on my trip so far. Here, they focus not on history (although the building stands on the site of the infamous Massacre of Glencoe), but on the land itself--hiking, conservation, bird-watching, etc. The building itself is green, in its design, construction, and operation.
I perused exhibits on the massacre, Highland geological history, local flora and fauna, and recent conservation efforts.
It's true that the surrounding scenery is breathtaking. Unfortunately, that afternoon there was heavy rain and mist obscuring most of the mountain vistas. There are numerous pull-offs on the A82, where you can snap a few photos or launch an expedition up the side of a mountain. I spent some time climbing around a sixty-foot waterfall, but I didn't have the gear for an extended hike in that weather. read more
