What a joy! If you're going to be in the Fort William area, book a trip on the Jacobite "Harry Potter" train. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience if you're a tourist. The views were amazing. After several days of being on the road, hiking, horseback riding and fly fishing, doing nothing for a day and just watching the scenery go by was a lovely break. And it's also a steam train! How cool is that? They don't make these anymore. If you can swing it, book first class and book early. This is not something you can just book two weeks ahead, let alone the day of. The chairs in first class were comfortable and adorable. Order the afternoon tea and cheese plate packages when you book (one of each)-- it was enough food for two people. The trolley comes by and they serve tea and Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans and jelly slugs. So fun! Toward the back of the train is a small Harry Potter shop and also a mini bar where you can get butter beer and other Harry Potter inspired concoctions. This is a trip you won't forget!

I loved just about everything in our trip to Scotland, but the Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig was definitely a highlight! There's not too many steam trains around, so that's an experience worth having all by itself. The scenery you get to see is phenomenal; you start in Fort Williams near Ben Nevis, cross the Glenfinnan viaduct, plenty of coastal views, and then you end up in Mallaig, on the west coast. Photo opportunities abound. You spend a bit of time in Mallaig-- enough to grab lunch, explore a little and get souvenirs if you want-- and then return to Fort William. The train and route are partially famous thanks to Harry Potter. Fans of the movies will recognize the cars and the viaduct. If you book your seats in advance, you might be lucky enough to get a spot in the Harry Potter car. First class seats are available too. Economy seats on the train aren't fancy, but they're comfortable enough. Some first-come, first-serve seats are available and we were lucky enough to get them, but I'd definitely recommend reserving seats in advance if you can. If you are buying tickets the day of, bring cash and arrive early. The trip takes up the better part of the day, but it's absolutely worth it.

Harry Potter fans will love this train ride! There are two movie scenes here: 1st) on the ride out and back you go over the famous bridge. 2nd) you see Dumbledores final resting place "the island" on the way back. There are two other stops on the way, but only one they let you off and it's a cheesy museum and not worth the money. The cute little shop on the train was fun, but could have had more items. The train itself could use from Harry Potter magic like having the trolley with snacks going throughout the train sell Harry Potter snacks (like chocolate frogs) and the bar could sell butter beer. It would also be cool to see the employees dressed in outfits for their part. I think they could play this up a little more for the Harry Potter fans, but overall a great experience!

The reason Michael and Drams Scotland are getting 5 stars (5 green dots on Trip Advisor) is simple,…read morethey did everything right. Short TLDR version: From first email to when Michael dropped us off at our hotel after our tour, everything was perfect. Everything. Do not hesitate to book With Drams Scotland, they will take care of you. Read on below if you want more details. We are a demanding group of Americans and we wanted to see Scotland and drink Whiskey, a lot of whiskey. I emailed with 4-5 tour companies asking about options for travel and distillery visits and to be fair, several companies seemed like they would have worked out. What stood out about Drams was Ann Marie seemed to innately know what we wanted, and her proposed itinerary blew the competition out of the water. Drams does many different kinds of tours. Spending time chatting with Michael, our tour guide and drunk wrangler, he told us about the many different kinds of tours they offer. I saw on Yelp that many reviews are for one or two day trips, and thats cool, but we did a 5 day trip and I honestly wish it could have been longer. If you are looking for a Highlander tour, they do that. Want to see Loch Ness? They do that too. You and 300 other Americans will be there taking pictures of a large body of water, brilliant. If you want to see Scotland the real, American way, well they have that tour nailed down and I highly recommend it. Whiskey! 5 days, no mercy. 12+ distilleries, private tastings, private dinners, local pubs, sheep, great B&B's, great sites, hikes to castles, trips to the coast, two drunken ferry rides, more sheep, scary small local roads, fish and chips (get the cod), pies (the meat kind), pints and pints of beer, cool towns, and the best part, avoiding other tourists. You know whats better than snootily sipping whiskey in an overpriced bar in America? Drinking it strait out of the cask in Scotland. You seriously do this at several distilleries. To really be able to see the great distilleries you need a good guide. We were able to tour Balvenie, a truly amazing and very private tour, because Michael has to connections to get you in there. We were drinking 50 year old Lagavulin at 930am in their barrel house cause we wanted to start our day off right. We played pool with the locals in the town pub till they closed the bar, while the tourists ate at their tourist trap hotels. We saw the castle from Monty Python, some sheep, where they filmed Braveheart (do not discuss Braveheart with Michael, he will tell you the truth about William Wallace and try to convince you that Robert the Bruce was the real hero), hiked to a cool castle that I do not remember the name of, learned many local sayings that I arrogantly use at home now, and laughed so hard the whole time our faces hurt. And whiskey. If you are thinking of booking a Whiskey tour, do it, and do it with Drams Scotland, you will not be disappointed.

I'll be honest - segwaying has been a dream of mine ever since I watched Arrested Development and…read morewas impressed by Gob whizzing about on his segway. I never really considered actually doing it until I saw a voucher pop up on itison for a place in Blair Atholl. Two seconds later, I'd booked it. I believe the voucher was around £7 pp for a 30 minute experience with an optional upgrade to a full 60 minute ride for an extra £10 pp. It was a little difficult to get a weekend booking as it was close to the end of the voucher so instead I booked for a Friday and got a 1.30pm session. I really didn't know what to expect. Communication from Segway-Ecosse was excellent, David emailed me this morning about the possible bad weather and asking for my contact number in case he needed to get in touch. Thankfully by the time we got to Blair Atholl the weather had cleared up. Trevor was our guide for the session - this guy reminded me a lot of Simon Pegg and he was also comedy gold, so I knew we were in for a treat. Firstly, you get to have a practice in a trial area. This also draws quite a crowd from the caravan park so just pretend they're not watching you. Trevor was an excellent teacher - liked a laugh and was really good at explaining how it all worked. I even made the mistake of joking about segwaying off a cliff and he took it really well. And it is actually really easy to do once you get the hang of it, it feels quite natural in a weird way. You'll start on a restricted speed of 4mph and then when you're out of the caravan park you can go up to 12mph. The hour session is structured in a way that you add a little bit of knowledge on as you go along, e.g. tackling big hills and tree roots and cliffs (haha). I loved absolutely every second of this and never wanted it to end. I even wailed "I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE" as we were driving away. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun (and I spend a lot of time on roller skates). The experience is exhilarating while also being relaxing - we got to see some lovely Highland forrest areas around Blair Castle. I can't wait to go back for the 90 minute ride and am hoping they soon offer all day experiences (with a picnic lunch). I can't recommend this experience highly enough - if you want a fun day out where you feel like you're actually gliding through a forrest with the fun of riding over tree roots, rabbit holes, going up and down hills, weaving in and out of trees, then you've really got to try this.

Now we have all been segwaying before so were very pleased that we were allowed to go a bit more off road than the gentle regular route. We zipped and glided around the Blair Atholl estate and it was spectacular. A great wee set up in a beautiful location. I got my voucher from itison so got our trip half price but I now have a loyalty card where you can work towards a free go.
