Im fairly certain that this hardware store has been here since the early 1500's. Why the word " antique " hasnt been incorporated into their name and signage is beyond me though. If Wyatt Earp shopped here I wouldnt be surprised. If the Wright brothers bought parts here I also wouldnt be surprised. Hell, if Abe Lincoln used to buy paint here and they had a picture of him at the register, I wouldnt bat an eye. This store rocks. Just dont expect it to be as expansive as a Home Depot or as expensive as an Ace Hardware.Surprisingly enough, the variety of merchandise here is pretty decent. They have all kinds of stuff here that you wouldnt expect. Go see for yourself homey. The people working here are very nice and the little old lady let me go behind the counter to get a closer look at door handles. Very cool. Local, competitive pricing and just about everything you need for that project around the house. Conveniently located in Ocean Beach. I had some keys made here recently and they even have the fancy keys!! I was also impressed by their spray paint collection when I had a recent project considering the store isn't enormous and spray paint color choices wasn't something I was expecting to have a lot of. There is nothing in the world I love more than a neighborhood hardware store (sorry honey). For any smaller item or tool - screwdriver, sponge, sandpaper, lightbulb - OB Hardware has it for a decent price, even some more random items (like the crazy hard-bristle grout-scrubbing brush I just got that works like a dream on the nastiness that was living in our apartment tile). Apart from the things for minor home projects like pipe or lighting fixtures, most of it is stuff you might otherwise pick up while at Rite Aid, but I am here to say don't. The staff is wonderfully friendly and helpful, and I would much rather give them my business. They also make keys and mix paint as well! read more

I've been coming here for years and they almost always have just what I'm looking for. There's no need to go to Home Depot when you have a family owned business right here in OB that has what you need at a good price. The people here are also very nice which goes a long way with me. Another reason that I dig my neighborhood. I needed a few things to fix up a beach cruiser and wasn't driving so I checked OB Hardware out. They had everything I needed and I walked out with a handful of nuts and bolts, 3 cans of spray paint and a hex wrench for under $10. The people that work there are definitely OB, which I like (YMMV tho!) Not a huge selection, like if you needed a powertool or something, but It does the job for me. read more

I went in to get some keys made and I needed 6 copies. He made a few grunting noises as if it was too much trouble. As he was setting up the key to be copied he again asked "6?" and I said "you know what just make 1". I guess I'll be talking my business to Home Depot. read more

I am completely clueless about hardware and going to Home Depot causes me great anxiety. I needed several replacement items and hoped to find it at this store. As I inferred before, I am definitely not a handy girl. The lady at the counter came to my aid and walked me through the aisles and helped me get everything on my list. The prices were quite reasonable and they seem to have everything. As I was checking out at the counter, I witnessed a gentleman come in and handed the clerk a dollar stating that he was in the other day and was short a dollar when he made his purchase, but the counterperson let him have the merchandise anyway. This is a shop that I want to continue to give my business to and encourage others to do so as well. read more

My first review is going to be 5 stars. This is because they are nice patient and knowledgable. Also for the fact I have lived here for so long and have never been inside. Well Just the other day all that changed. I needed 2 turn buckles lartge ones to keep my camper on my truck and the people of the road safe. This place was suggested to me but i figured i would go home depot where they would definitly have it and a t a cheaper price. I my friends was wrong, yes me, wrong. They did not have this item. Went to this ob hardware store and picked up the last 2 they had after a little chit chat and humor with them trying to remember the name of the part. I think this will be my go to from now on. 98 Years!!! Great people with all the knowledge and patience to solve your problems. I had a recurring drip in my bathroom facet. Dottie explained the workings of the facet and sold me a 39 cent rubber washer. They were even nice enough to let me borrow a specialty plumbing tool to complete the job. read more

OB hardware is one of those places I'll go to and TRY and spend a little extra because I want them to be around as an alternative to the faceless orange box store. (Depot has its ups and downs but their habit of discontinuing products I'd been buying for years is annoying!) Anyway the comparison to Andy Griffith is spot on, but in that vein there are a few negatives. The staff, frankly, are geriatrics- not senile at all, don't get me wrong, and hey are happy and cheerful- but seem to be frozen in time in Mayberry 1964 with the products they carry and a question about a new product or process inherent to a new product will fly right over their head. So none of those newfangled VCR's with their blinking clocks that need to be reset to be found here, consarnit dagnabbit! (or new coatings, bump proof entry locks, etc) However for what they are, their prices are pretty fair. I would be very upset if they ever closed. They have a bargain tool bin to paw through at the front if you have to wait a minute or two to get rung up- though it's definately a "get what you pay for" selection, just the fact that they have one and knew where to put it is a plus in the "fun to go there" dept. read more

Love this place. If you are looking for something specific on a tight time line, just go to Home Depot, but if you can walk around and admire this store you are in for a treat. It has local solutions to local problems, and tons of hardware covered in dust for houses like mine that are old. The staff is very friendly and they have a wide smattering of materials. You will walk in and find solutions to problems you didn't even know your home had. I was pleasantly surprised at how much stuff this little place had, came in for some long threaded rods and came out victorious along with a piece of fine grit sandpaper which I needed for another project. The prices are a bit high but I like to support local businesses in OB so I go here when I need stuff quickly. I'll be back to get some window screens made next week. They can order stuff for you as well. Minimum $5 purchase for credit cards. 30-day returns with receipt.
