I even (unintentionally) made my husband miss out on an activity that he had wanted to do, just to make sure we made it here for our tour. Tours are by appointment only and I was a bit worried because I had only just heard about this place the day before and was hoping to make an appointment on short notice. Unfortunately when I called I didn't get an answer so I left a message. I was so anxious that I followed up with an email and later that evening I received a kind response and was able to schedule our visit. We ended up getting a hotel and staying an extra night in the area so we could visit and it absolutely worth it!. This was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. Getting to the sanctuary was a little confusing, it's kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but I trusted our map and we made it right on time. We let ourselves in the gate and by the time we pulled up there was someone coming out to welcome us. All the people here were kind and genuine and it is clearly a labor of love run by people who deeply care about what they do. Getting to meet the donkeys and learn their stories was incredibly moving. They all had unique circumstances and different personalities. Waylon was my absolute favorite. He was warm and vocal and full of character but all of the animals here just melted my heart. I laughed, and I cried on this tour. My only possible criticism about the entire experience was that it was just too short and I wish it could have lasted longer. The tour itself is free but by the end, we found ourselves stuffing all of the cash that we had on us into their donation jar. The other couple that was on the tour with us was discussing sponsoring a donkey for a year as we were leaving... I hope they did. This is the kind of place that makes you want to help in any way possible. If you're anywhere near Benson and have a soft spot for animals, you should make the effort to visit and donate if you can. Incredible places like these can only exist if people care enough to support them and this one truly deserves your support.

First time going to a donkey sanctuary -( didn't even know this existed). Super cool and fun…read moreexperience! The tour is free and you get to learn about donkeys, feed and pet donkeys, learn what the sanctuary does, and also about each donkey ( and mule) that are residing there. The couple that started and work the sanctuary and the staff who worked there truly care for animals and it shows by their knowledge of each animal and the work they put in. My only recommendation- just because it's a free tour - don't be a jerk- donate to the cause. And even if you don't care about the cause... someone takes the time to give you a tour. Be nice. Do right.

I called and left a message explaining that she was a particular kind of kitty and best suited in a home where she was the only pet. A man called me back, he didn't even bother to ask me any questions. he was clearly exasperated, in fact, he sounded almost insulted that I had even bothered to call them for help in the first place. He told me that they can't take a cat who can't be around other cats. Well, she's dead now. She got sick, so I could not, in good conscience, get rid of her, or send her to a shelter. So, I worked with her, until she could go no further. Hyperthyroidism was the disease and she did not respond well to the medication. In the end, we had to make the agonizing end of life decision for her and we let her go. Of course, she would have gotten sick, regardless of whether the shelter stepped up to help, or not, but I am still posting this because it is abundantly clear that they do not want to have to go above and beyond for the cats. They just want it to make pretend that they do.

I had over an hour drive to get there and they met me cordially. I had phoned ahead and they promised not to let Chaco be adopted before I arrived, which was very kind. I had my other dog in the car and they allowed him into a fenced off area to see if the 2 dogs would get along - many places will not allow this, but it was a critical issue for me. To rate a shelter based on its website is unfair. This is a quality caring place run on a shoestring - they get no funding other than donations. Sadly, Chaco passed away last week and I will be sending them a thank you donation in his honor and memory.

Nice and clean and no smells. We made an appointment to meet Chappy. When we arrived we were greeted by one of the volunteers. The place looked very well kept. It didn't smell like many other shelters. The dogs who were staying there were outside in the yard getting some exercise as it was sunny and fairly warm. The volunteers take them out and bring them in when it's closing time. This is when they clean the kennels. She was cleaning the cat room and feeding the 2 resident cats at this time. She had us sit and brought Chappy out for some interaction. We fell in love and said we'd adopt him, but had to wait to Feb. 3, pay day. She contacted one other volunteer via phone, and they "lent" us the fee, which if I can remember is around $60. They gave us a blanket, some food and a toy for our new cat. We thanked them profusely and took Chappy home. We repaid the bill in total on Feb. 3. Chappy is loving his new forever home. We are so happy he's part of our family.
