It's an older restaurant with a small store attached selling desserts, canned goods, pecans, etc. The restroom was clean. Wait to be seated. The self serve small buffet with dual serving sides includes salad, bread, veggies, and meats. Separate small dessert bar. There were 2 desserts-bread pudding and delicious peach cobbler and a soup. Oakridge kicked off its roadside buffet by some accounts back in 1964. Walking in the doors you feel like you could be in the same era. I don't think that itself harms the score but certainly some upgrades to bathrooms would not hurt. The decorum likely from wallpaper to interior finishes may have remained untouched since the 60's which gives it a very rustic feel. Going to win the battle in food for certain demographics..seeing kielbasa sausage with sauerkraut and bacon I am right at home. Country fried pork, cooked cabbage, real mashed potatoes and I follow you anywhere, but realize it's not for everyone. There was a salad bar section but I was interested in other items. Some items were not really warm like the sausage, fried chicken, beef stew compared to other items like country friend pork sitting right beside them which was disappointing. Still food flavor was good and this is good ole' fashioned recipe prep. Chicken soup was very good and scalding hot. Hot peach cobbler and banana pudding for desserts were very good and would put the banana pudding in a state fair contest and confidently claim blue ribbon status prior to judging. Don't let the score fool you, I'd be back just because it's my comfort food preference and I have some tolerance but for families getting off the highway with picky eaters may keep going. The DOWNSIDE was that the bathrooms were the dirtiest that I have seen in many years. Plus, it took a while to get any service at the pastry counter. The two girls had their backs to us and were absorbed on their phones. I could have walked out with the entire store. They didn't look up for some time. Three stars is generous because of this. I hadn't eaten here in awhile and my visit today reminded me why. If you get the buffet, most everything is industrial slop. I watched them replenish the condiments on the salad bar, they came from huge jars of goo. On the hot bar, the vegetables were obviously low-grade offerings from a food service company. The meats were overcooked and over seasoned. The ribs were of such poor quality, they were inedible. The peach cobbler was halfway decent, couldn't tell what the other hot dessert was. Service was initially quick but then the server never returned. Ambiance? A poor man's country store. Schobel's in Columbus is much better for this type of food. Skip this place. read more

Max and I are in Texas for a few weeks and have passed this place almost every day on our way to the antique show we are doing. Left the show early to try this place and we were not disappointed!! Best sauerkraut I have ever eaten!! The stewed cabbage excellent as was just about everything else we had. The service also spot on. They even gave us to go cups of tea. What?!! Well well...this was a nice surprise! We visited years ago, and it wasn't anything special. We stopped by on our way back from a martial arts event in Houston. This time, it was such a great meal, for a great price, that I struggled to find negative items. I have to review the whole establishment, not just the restaurant itself. We got the buffet. It's not a buffet with tons of items. The items they did offer, were great! You get very full fast, not very many light items, unless you just get salad. Who gets salad at a buffet? Exactly.! We got roasted chicken, sausage, fried chicken, sausage, turkey breast, beef tips in gravy,rice, corn, macaroni salad, peach cobbler, and bread pudding. No complaints really on the food. Nothing was dry, and it was well seasoned! The sausage was the only thing we didn't like, just lacked flavor. Super affordable too! I love that! The big hit was the peach cobbler for me. I'm not a fan of it in general. I love when I give it foods another shot, and I get my mind changed! This one was awesome! The staff was super friendly and attentive! The negatives are for the place itself. The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting! We said nope, we will hold it till bucceees. The store also makes no sense, and honestly seems extremely dated and the layout makes no sense. Also, there are not tons of items to choose in the buffet. I took my 83yrs mother, who enjoyed the Saturday buffet, especially the Okra rice. I personally did not like the service. We were at a table, waited to be contacted by a server to take pur drinks or a menu item-after 15 mins, I had to flag down a server to get that help. The hilarious part for me was trying to get a Bill, I asked 3X, only to be told, "I'll be back ", finally had to go to register and tell what we ate, to pay and leave. I watched a family of four come in and were not helped, ~20 mins, until I told the dad, you're going to have to flag down a server. Perhaps, since it was prior to Thanksgiving, customer traffic was high & servers were not scheduled to accommodate? I will not return. read more

Buffet was great. Food was tasty, well seasoned. Nothing was bland. Chicken was good and crispy, ribs would fall off the bone, fried catfish was soft and flaky while crispy. Bread and sides were well made and hot when served. The service was fast and easy and they always checked up on us even though we had the buffet. Super nice and professional. Floors were clean and tables were well kept and every 10 minutes I saw the cooks coming out to clean the buffet station. Banana pudding had the crispy cookies and it was super light and refreshing for a pudding. Loved it. read more

We would always stop here on our return trip from San Antonio. The last few trips we have noticed a decline in their food. This trip we were very surprised how downhill they have fallen. Mostly empty shelves. Sat down for the buffet because they couldn't tell me the cost of the menu items. Prices different at the register than on the menu. They explained they were implementing a new program on their registers. Ok. I ordered buffet and only good items were fried chicken and chicken and noodles. What has happened? Breads were stale and bread pudding was so dry it looked like concrete. On top of that they now charge a 3 percent fee for using a credit card. We will stop in Columbus next time. read more

BBQ brisket was a little better than Buckee's bbq brisket sandwich. it was about 15% fat which is how I like it. it was a little tough or more drier on the end which is to be expected. I could smell the "smoked" meat some. It is between lunch and dinner. Maybe it would have been better at lunch or dinner. I love a good tender brisket. There was delicious chicken n' dumplings, with soft, delicate noodles and a delectable, dainty sauce. The sausage was very tasty, it paired up perfectly with the sauerkraut. The actual restaurant is very clean and was built in 1969, still going strong! Our waitress, Renita, was so kind and she brought out my food in less than a minute! The ladies at the register were very helpful and kind, as well as understanding. The hostesses who worked near the buffet were very funny as well, making this experience amazing. There were no flies at the buffet, and all the food was fresh and hot! There was no limit on the amounts of desserts you picked out from the buffet either. My iron-deficient member of the party enjoyed the square ice. They said that it was the fourth best ice that they ever bit into. Two steps down from Cracker Barrel. The meat was not bad, but they served it on a bunch with chips. It has the ambiance of a country store, but they doesn't fully pull it off. The greeter was polite and humorous, but the wait staff didn't listen, didn't repeat the order, and wrote numbers on the ticket rather than what we ordered. Just keep driving to Buccees. Headed to Galveston from New Braunfels for our cruise, got hungry and stopped here for lunch. It's a staple in this area (been around since 1969!). I've been here before in the past, but my travel companions have not. They did have an epic looking lunch buffet, but we stuck with single entrees. Chicken Fried Chicken meal 8/10 - I would give this a 8/10 stars. Crust was very good with the chicken flavored great as well. Nice and crusty on the outside, yet still tender and moist on the inside. Mashed potatoes I would give 9/10, as they were homemade and tasted excellent! The fried okra I would say was a 6/10, as they seemed like typical frozen okra. They were good, but nothing to wow you. Club Sandwich 7/10 - the usual Club Sandwich, but all of the ingredients were fresh and portioned nice. Cheeseburger 7/10 - nice juicy burger and crispy fries. Typical cheeseburger plate, but everything was tasty. The service 8/10 - our server was attentive and very friendly. The atmosphere 7/10 - overall was nice. Seemed a little run down in some areas and renovated in others. It's a quirky atmosphere. We had a good experience here! Our server was super friendly and attentive to our party of 7. Pictured are the cheeseburger and hamburger steak with fries and potato salad, both of which were excellent! My sister almost never finishes her food and she ate the whole burger. The rest of us opted for the buffet, which was great value for the price of 15! There is also a cute country store at the entrance with local wine, lots of snacks and handmade goods that would make great gifts. Went to visit some friends in Katy Texas and on our way back to San Antonio we stopped in Schulenburg Texas and decided to try out the Oakridge smokehouse. They had a Buffet that we decided to try. Pretty good food overall which included fried chicken, barbecue ribs, roast beef, and some pretty tasty sides in a very fresh salad. Some of the desserts were also very good in particular the bread pudding. Waitress was great and people were friendly! read more

Truck driver eating alone sat at a table for 8 in the very back room even though several smaller tables were available. Had to wait awhile to get greeted and get my drink order and to order buffet. My first trip to the buffet I got salad which was ok just not a lot of options for toppings and dressings. My second trip I got veggies pork chop and fried chicken. But when I got back to my seat my table was cleared off, drink silverware and everything. So I went and tried find long employee to get my drink and silverware and they brought me a to go pack with a little plastic silverware which in no way was going to cut up a pork chop. So again I went hunting for a different employee and asked if I could get real silverware so I could and they brought me just a fork, no knife and we're touching the fork all over. This experience had me just find the manager I tell her I was leaving because they obviously didn't want my business. Worst service read more

The beef brisket was about 70% fat. Yuck! Enjoyed the salad bar. My wife had chicken fried steak and it was meh.

Fried catfish served piping hot. Loved the coleslaw and fried squash. My boyfriend raved over the homemade sauerkraut. Friendly service too.

I enjoy their barbecue. It's right out of the 60's and like the places we had in my childhood.

We ate the buffet; not worth the amount they charged; the food was cold; you could tell the food had been sitting out for a while; flies around the buffet; and only 2 items for dessert choice. I had to asked if they are going to refill one dessert; never did within the hour we were there. So NO; we will not eat there again. It's a tourist trap at a high cost. They have a completely menu, however the prices were outrageous. They probably don't want to cook other food, so you have to eat the buffet. Because the buffet was about $2-3 more than items on the menu. Eat there at your owe risk. Go ahead throw your money down the drain. The workers were very friendly. What happened to this place ... went to eat here the other weekend and it wasn't the same from a few years back. I had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes. I kept adding salt to the potatoes to give it some flavor... I went ahead and asked for gravy because they were that bland, the gravy tasted like packet gravy I buy from the store. I also ordered my daughter chicken strips with Mac n cheese to go. The strips were thin I was shocked.. I was expecting hand battered like other restaurants, but no they were fake. We have stopped in twice to this little hole in the wall place. The first time was several months ago when the world was still turning. Unfortunately, somehow I missed leaving a review. I definitely didn't want to neglect them again. We came in on Monday after calling when leaving San Antonio headed to Galveston to make sure they were open. Of course, I was pleasantly told they were. Upon arriving I went in alone to let them know we had a party of 6 and 2 high chairs. I told them right away we didn't mind placing the kids at a separate table as we had read the guidelines for social distancing and figured it would have to be done. Sure 'nuff. They promptly sat us and took our drink orders. Got our drinks and ordered our food and I suddenly had an urge for some coffee as it was still before noonish. Our server gladly made a fresh pot. And yes. The coffee is good. We decided on the lunch buffet. They had to serve us as that was the deal these days. It was no problem tho as every single time one of us needed a fresh plate made there was always someone ready to serve it. We didn't have to wait on our own server to get what we needed. Our server was pretty exceptional, but there was also a young man there, I didn't catch his name. He was always helping other tables and his fellow employees even tho he had his own guests to care for. Just wanted to point out how polite and pleasant he is. He seems like a jewel. Hold on to that one for sure! It's rare these days for young ones to be so great with the public. But then again he has some pretty good role models surrounding him at work so... My honest opinion of this place is the service is great. The prices are fair. The food, both menu and buffet, are wonderful. It all seems homemade and makes me feel a little less guilty for not always wanting to give my family that home cooked experience. The little gift/shop area is pretty neat too. We only ordered the buffet. The breads were all stale (cornbread and rolls), not edible. All the meat options were hard and not tasty at all. The hostess was not friendly.
