The queues are quickly serviced so you don't have to wait long. The butchers were friendly enough and the price was very good I go there whenever I want a good BBQ selection. The best cuts are always available so if you want it just ask, they'll come back with a great steak. I had 8 1/4 pounders and 12 sausages for just over £5 that's great value for money.

There'd be…read morea monumental trek up Cathedral Road that would seem to take weeks, but knowing my grandmother's hatred for physical exertion, probably only took an hour or so. We'd maybe stop into a cafe for egg and chips and my nan would, of course, know the owner. We'd go to a couple of pound shops. Not to look about, mind you. But because my nan wanted very specific things from there. And then, before heading to the bus stop, we'd go to the butchers "to pick up something for our tea". That was the routine. And now that I'm an adult myself, I can't help but smile whenever I dive in to grab a steak "for my tea". Of course, that smile also comes from the fact that in this particular butcher, it's not uncommon to see the meat cut right in front of you if you go at the right time of the day. There's something visceral and satisfying about watching your food being sliced up right in front of you. It's like being primal by proxy. And the prices on top of this... they're just the greatest thing ever. Buying a steak big enough to beat a man to death with for pocket change gives an immense amount of satisfaction. And then heading back to the cave with a hunk of meat over your shoulder? You feel like a hunter. What's not to love?

From the green and white awning , to the little painted pig holding the open sign and the delivery boy's bike with the wicker basket out front, Young's is as picture card perfect as butchers could possibly be. This continues inside as well with a vast array of old-style instruments and utensils that could be the props department if they ever get round to making Saw XIII: Victorian Punishment 3D. Specialising in pork, the friendly guy behind the meat counter will happily talk you through what's on offer and what to do with it. If you walk in and no one's around ring the bell, as he's probably outback chopping up stuff. It's a tad pricey but you get what you pay for. Four rashers of bacon set me back £2.20 but unlike the rubbish you get from supermarkets, it isn't plumped up with water and doesn't shrivel in the pan to size of a postage stamp. It was also delicious. Young's is a really nice, friendly shop and worth a visit if you ever pop to Llantwit for the day.

The level of service that you receive at this butchers is second to none, and acts as a real sweetener considering that the price tags are slightly higher than you would see in lesser establishments. Advice is liberally provided including how to select the right cut of meat for your needs, as well as recommendations on how to cook it. They will even suggest the best ways to store the meat, and get the most out of your purchase for your money... using the bones to make stock etc... This is a great family business!

Their gammon and cooked meats are second to none. Having a specialist independent pork butcher on my doorstep is a real privilege. I have lived in London and travelled all over the world but I think the quality of the food served here is comparable with anywhere in the country. When i first visited the floors were wooden and had sawdust on them. Clifton Street was a thriving shopping area then too. A lot has changed but Todd's has managed to stay reassuringly the same. All the produce is freshly made or cooked on the premises and includes ham,pork, gammon, sausages,faggots, dripping,chitlings pork pies, brawn and polony. They also sell cooked chicken, and my personal favourites tongue and salt beef. Perhaps someone should give Jamie Oliver a call...?

The shop can get filled quickly and at times it is hard to move with trolleys everywhere. The staff are polite and helpful and there is a good sized carpark where you will find a burger bar.

But there is something homely and traditional about the food and experience that a good butcher can provide. And here, of course, I'm talking about David Lush. The quality of produce here is unsurpassable. The cut of meat and freshness is always to a high standard. They do a great range of sausages and burgers, including gluten-free options. Notably, their bacon is to die for; none of that thin supermarket stuff we're unfortunately used to. Yes, David Lush is more expensive than the supermarket. Yes, you have to get their quickly in the day before they sell out (they're just that good). But none of that really matters, does it?

Needless to say, it was delicious. Venison from the Vale produce Prime Park venison which is lean and highly nutritious. It comes in a variety of family size cuts and can be bought directly from the Park or from farmers markets including; Cowbridge, Penarth and Mumbles. It's a seasonal meat, available between the months of September to April. (I used to buy fantastic venison sausages from the butchers in Cowbridge... I have a feeling that these are made by Venison from the Vale also... Mmmmmmm!)
