Looked for a couple massage spots, and came across Tong Zhang. I've always been intrigued by needle therapy and the skills of the Chinese so I had to give it a try, I trusted that I couldn't go wrong. The massage was painful, but dam, if felt the muscle being loosened up if that makes sense. The needle therapy was uneventful. First time ive tried it. I was a little scared, but didn't even notice it from a comfort perspective. I definitely felt one tingle a nerve as it went in. Walked out of there with some relief. Maybe 50% improvement. Woke up the next morning feeling better. A little sore in the massaged area, but definitely better from a stiff neck perspective. Definetly a place to check out.

I had been experiencing persistent back discomfort and related symptoms that were impacting my day-to-day well-being. Her acupuncture treatment really hit the spot and eased a lot of tension. Each session feels tailored to what my body needs in the moment, and she always takes time to explain what she's doing and why. I deeply appreciate her ability to combine technical expertise with genuine care and attentiveness. Beyond the treatments themselves, Candise creates such a warm and supportive environment. She listens closely, is easy to talk to, and makes sure you feel comfortable throughout the process. She used acupuncture to release the muscles in the entire surrounding area, and the relief was almost immediate. Both Evelyn and Sarah are great. I feel well taken care of. Every time, I walk in with a new ailment lol because tennis takes a toll on the whole body! They are always there to listen and take special attention to my concerns. Sarah has even given additional recommendations of what to do outside of acupuncture based on the issues I'm describing, and I truly appreciate it! Cash or check is preferred; credit card is also an option but with an additional fee and an online form? (I've never paid credit card haha). You can also do a 5 or 10 prepaid treatment card. I love the sliding scale, as it works for those on a tight budget - but please give more if you can! Booking an appointment online is easy. This location is convenient for me, but there is also the Grand location available with more practitioners and more seating! I'm impressed that only two people run the show here at Laurel location. I believe there are 8 chairs here, of various inclines; you can grab community pillows to get yourself in a comfortable position to stay about 30 minutes up to 1 hour! I always want to maximize and do 1 hour haha. I've come with a lot of forearm/wrist/hand issues, so it's basically a requirement for me to prop my arms up on pillows - otherwise, they fall asleep during the treatment! It's a nice 1 hour out of the day to just listen to podcasts; I usually just fall asleep attempting to listen to podcasts lol. I do think that acupuncture has been a big part of my injury healing journey (of course, in addition to rest and rehab exercises) and I'll happily continue coming here.

The studio is a very calming place to walk into, and Deanna was very warm and put me at ease. I really appreciate the calmness there, and always looked forward to my sessions. She was extremely knowledgable and competent in forging a plan for me to help in each stage of the IVF process. I felt in very safe hands, and though I don't really know how the magic of acupuncture works, it made all the difference for me. I got pregnant, and have had a very comfortable, mobile, sane, easy experience that I am so grateful to have had given the high risks of my pregnancy. I am now a week away from delivering my baby, and would recommend Tao to anyone struggling with health or fertility issues.

The approach to talking about my injury was "accessible" to my "western medicine" upbringing. And most importantly: my third visit was like turning the switch off for my pain. I probably had a pinched nerve in my neck, but due to delays seeing a pain specialist through my primary care, I was trying anything. I ultimately was seeing a "western medicine" doctor and Tao to Wellness at the same time. But the timing of my pain shutting off is strongly suggestive that acupuncture played a big part in shortening the duration (which my "western medicine" pain specialist had suggested would be possible). Deanna was my acupuncturist.

Dr. Tang is a gem in Oakland Chinatown - he's the latest in a long line of traumatologists (in…read moreCantonese "Tiet-Dah") who learned how to treat injuries from his father, who learned it from his father, back a couple of generations! Turns out his dad has his own clinic a few doors down! Simon trained in Hong Kong, lived here for a couple decades and thus speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, and English pretty fluently. He is great at what he does and charges reasonably for what he can accomplish. Today's visit for my chronic neck injuries lasted about 30-40 minutes (I didn't keep track of time but it was less than an hour) and involved some history taking, examination, education on specific exercises I could do for wrist and shoulder injuries, then a focused deep tissue massage, and application of a heated herbal poultice. Dr. Tang has a great bedside manner and is focused (he massages each tenderpoint for 1-3 minutes, on a timer). All this for $80. He's much better than the Tiet-Da doctors I went to in Hong Kong. In general, daily treatment for acute injuries can get you better within a few treatments (depending on severity) and longstanding chronic injuries typically resolve with daily treatment for about three weeks. I've had some promising results, I will be back tomorrow!
