This was especially important, she thought, since I had recovered from a torn retina and really should seek specialists when it comes to my eyes. She was completely right, of course. I found Dr. Lam via positive Yelp and Google reviews. I'm so thankful that I did! He was personable and very thorough in his exam. He explained that the blurred vision in my post-surgical eye (from the pneumatic retinopexy/retina surgery) was in fact cataracts. He indicated that I was overdue for surgery since my vision was so negatively impacted. Dr. Lam did my cataract surgery about a month later. It was deemed a success with at least 20/20 vision. Unfortunately, there was blurring over my lens. Dr. Lam explained that I'd need a follow-up laser procedure. Dr. Lam did this laser surgery, a capsulotomy, a few days ago. After resting/napping later that afternoon, I opened my eyes and had clear, unencumbered vision out of my 2x surgery eye! This is the first time I've had at least 20/20 since 1st grade! It's been a long 13 month journey with two eye surgeries and 1 minor procedure, but thankfully, my vision is even better than it was. Dr. Lam is very experienced. In my opinion, he uses tools to accurately and fully assess one's eyes. I felt 100% comfortable with him at all times (a little less with some Medical Technicians if I'm being honest..). He's answered all questions, often fully explaining/anticipating questions even before I have a chance to ask. He also approached treatment more conservatively; for example, he recommended waiting several months post-cataract surgery before having the capsulotomy since lasering too early could re-tear my retina. My capsulotomy was nearly 13 months after my retinal surgery. I'm thankful to Dr. Lam and have great confidence in his abilities! I'm so happy to have found such a capable opthalmologist.

However, I will say, never before had an MD spent time with me, explaining why they are testing my eyes for glaucoma and why they were "watching" rather than doing anything. All testing was done in-house and results returned on the same day. No need to reschedule for a "testing day" as was the policy with my previous ophthalmologists. Dr. Gupta's commitment to me, as a patient was impressive AND his office staff was professional, kind and helpful, as well. I don't say this very often, but this is a place I would enjoy working. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. I have already scheduled my 2022 annual appointment. I have finally secured a place for my eye care!

Headed home on Sunday and had a local Toronto AM talk radio station on and they were doing a show on LASIK. Being myopic I was interested in the technology for possible use on me. They had this doctor on who was so interesting and so knowledgable. The fact is he practically invented modern Ophthalmic surgery. As the show went on I was stunned to find out this man had his office in Hinsdale and hell's bells I lived in Oak Brook. I made the appointments to get it done. Dr. Foulkes was even more engaging in person and we talked shop and also talked about an array of topics all of which he was seriously prepared for discourse. This is one smart man. I told him after the exam that if he could get me to 20/40 I was in. He fixed me with a penetrating gaze and said: "If I can't get you to 20/20 I won't take you." Well he looked at my tests snd said he could 20/20 me. I did the procedure and went home, napped for four hours and KAZAAAM! I could see again. It was a religious experience. Then I found out Dr Foulkes failed to get me to 20/20. I tested at 20/15. An in the park Grand Slam. My vision is still 20/15 and I'm 64 years of age. Of course I wear readers, but nothing prescription. Just Dollar Store magnifiers. Dr. Foulkes is a bespoke health care provider and you will pay a small premium to see an industry legend. Pay the two dollars. Get your Lasik from the best, or go blind like the rest. That's a little hyperbole. Are you seeing like looking through runny egg yolks? I was looking for a practice that uses advanced technology (has optomap retinal scanning) and a good selection of frames, and isn't run by old people afraid of technology. Enter Dr. Franceschini's practice. I was so glad I found them. Easy to book an appointment as a new patient back when I found this office in 2016. I was super pregnant at the time so wanted to get my new glasses before the baby was due, and his folks were great about working with the lab to get them done and to me before baby got here. When I came in for this year's eye exam, I was pleasantly (read: extremely) suprised and happy to see that the office had moved to an electronic lens system for the eye exam. Meaning, Dr. Franceschini switches between "1" and "2" with a cool remote-like thing. It means he's less in your face (not that it was an issue) and you can compare the exam letters more easily. I love the embracing of technology. Moving along to Dr. Franceschini's staff - they are a friendly, amazing, helpful group. Gina is my technician and she's been great in helping me find frames, order frames, debate frames...I seriously think she's amazing. She also helped me with my contact fittings this year. In an era where customer service seems to be dead, Dr. Franceschini's office and Oakbrook Optical seriously take great care of their patients/customers. I can't imagine going anywhere else to have my eyes taken care of. Seriously - great service, advanced eyecare technology, great people. That's my takehome message. However, my experience with the staff, particularly Collette, was disappointing. After my exam, I worked with Collette to try on frames for my low prescription. I found a pair I liked but decided to hold off until I felt better and could return with a second opinion. Collette made a subtle remark under her breath about hoping the frames would still be there, which struck me as unnecessary. Two days later, she called to ask if I was coming back for the frames. When I explained that I was still deciding and had requested a copy of my prescription, her tone noticeably shifted. She sounded curt and dismissive, and told me getting my prescription wasn't her department, even though the front desk is only steps away. When I later called back for an update, she answered again and was just as dismissive. I didn't feel confident my request would be followed through, and asked to speak with someone else. Her response made it clear that helping me was a burden. Ultimately, I had to make a third contact and visit the office in person to get my prescription. Even then, it wasn't signed by the doctor, and no one, including Collette, acknowledged the confusion or offered an apology. I've worked in customer service and wouldn't speak to any customer the way I was spoken to. I expected more from an office with such strong reviews and designer branding.
