Waterman (only 30-miles up the ACH) opens, that's a very special occasion because they really only get to open for skiing once every 3 to 5 years because of a wide variety of factors; they do not make any snow and rely fully on mother nature, the winter can be very harsh on the mountain roads, which cuts them off a lot of times, one year a forest fire took out their phone lines, etc etc etc... it's always something. Therefore, you can't plan to go to Mt. Waterman, you just have to be ready to run when they do open! This resort may not share the polish of the other local resorts, but the entire staff is a class act and they're all just ON IT when it comes time to opening with very little notice. The people who come out are all so appreciate of the staff and you can hear everyone telling the staff thank you, etc all day, as well as chatter amongst themselves. People are generally very, very happy to be there and don't worry about the minor inconveniences that they might bitch about at the other resorts. Everyone has to get there and enjoyment while they're there because you really never know when you might be there again. The chairs are older and slower, but extremely well maintained and they get you up the slopes! Come and enjoy it anytime you can. As far as summer, the hiking trails and views are awesome and they have summer recreational sports as well, but winter is the special time to visit.

I've been playing disc golf for a little over a year and heard a lot of things about Chavez Ridge,…read moreand most of it warning that it's not beginner-friendly, nor is it for the faint of heart, and I mean that literally because you'll get some really good cardio in just playing this course. Most of the course is on the ridge so you're rarely playing level ground. Wear good shoes. This course favors left-handed and forearm throwers. If you curve too far off to the left on most holes, you'll pay a very steep, and I mean steep price for it. I made sure to bring discs that can be easily replaced because you do have a chance of losing one or two. I'm surprised in a good way by the condition of the course. The tee-pads are rubber and long enough to make a good run-up while you throw, the baskets were all in great shape and there wasn't too much tagging. Really good players could easily play this entire course with mid-ranges and putters. I used my driver quite a bit, but I don't have much arm speed. I did OK. A few birdies, a few pars, and more bogies than I care to admit! It's very easy to get, "Chavezed," which means if your disc doesn't land flat it might decide to roll all the way down a steep hill and into the thick brush. Consider yourself forewarned! (; It's a dry and dusty course, but some of it is in the shade. Don't forget to carry some water. I was there on a Friday morning, with a few players around but not bad. I hear it gets really crowded on weekends. It's a little tricky to navigate. You'll need UDisk to find your way around, and even then it's a bit confusing. I was fortunate enough to join up with a group that knew the course so that made it a lot more fun. I used Google Maps directions: Chavez Ridge Disc Golf Course, Solano Canyon Dr &, Park Row Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90012. It put me really close to the first hole. You pull off the road and park head in. Be sure and use your parking brake! There's no water or restroom on the course. Too bad the city can't pony up for a porta-potty. I'm really glad I played here and I'm glad I waited to play it until I was somewhat ready. I'll be back. It's a great course and there are some spectacular views of LA and Dodger Stadium. This place is one of LA's gems!

If you've haven't been "Chavezed", you ain't livin'!…read more CRDGC plays along the ridge and steep slopes of Chavez Ravine. I'm mostly throwing putters off the tee and the occasional Roc3 or Atlas. That facilitates the tight lines and sticky landings needed here. I've watched many a' card-mate throw too many a faster-speed disc, only to watch it land, edge up and do The Chavez (that inevitable 100'-200' roll aaaaaalllllll the way down the hill). Similarly, 30' putts can bounce off the cage and suffer this fate...that's how steep the slopes are. Throwing mids and putters also helps avoid errant kicks off the trees which, with a higher speed disc will result in disaster here. So, the course is a real workout for your upshot/short game accuracy. I shot -5 (6 birds/1 bog') yesterday afternoon utilizing the above disc mix. Sadly, idiotic vandals have bruised this course pretty badly; Holes #15-18 are completely gone. And many tee signs throughout the course have been graffitti'd over. Abhorrent. On a happier note, new holes have been added; after you finish up the western slope, head up across the intersection to 4 newly added holes. They play up...then down, taking you back to the spot where we've always dropped down to hit the eastern slope's holes. These new holes are challenging - offering the first real chances to throw a faster speed disc and air it out a bit. Many trees have been removed recently due to blight and fire precautions. The pre-blight course was, IMO, more difficult but this newly updated track presents a variety of risk-reward options that still equal a ton of fun. I had a blast. this was my first time trying disc golf but i had so much fun! with an ultimate frisbee background,…read moreit was an adjustment since the discs are smaller and thrown at a diff angle than with the big discs. the guy up front was super helpful and knowledgeable in helping my friend and i choose discs. it was only $3 to play on weekdays for an 18-hole course !!! such a steal. most holes were par 3 and we did par 4 on most so don't be intimidated if you're a beginner like me in disc golf. it's a nice stroll in the park with a frisbee twist, scenery is beautiful (esp the lake) and locals are so encouraging! i would definitely come back 10/10 experience all around

I love how Griffith Park is a natural oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. There are so many trails within the park that it becomes a choose your own adventure on how easy or difficult you want to make the journey. I came this time with a friend, and we decided to walk off some calories after noshing at a local delicatessen. We parked in a small lot at the end of a cul de sac that doubled as the Brush Canyon Trailhead. It was along the southern end of Griffith Park which was a shorter but steeper distance to the sign at Mt. Lee Summit. The initial mile was an ascent that took us to the junction with Mulholland Trail. From there, it was a series of fairly flat switchbacks that provided a nice overlook of the mansions below. The path was wide enough to allow lots of foot and horse traffic. A drawback was the landmines (i.e. dung) you had to dodge from the horses. When we reached Mt. Lee Drive, it was a junction in which you could continue around the bend towards Tyrolian Tank. That was a plateau which we visited on our way back with a beautiful view of the sign as a backdrop. Our decision was to continue another mile up a service drive that would lead us to the back of the sign. I think many people underestimate the additional winding slopes before reaching the endpoint. There must have been an increase of 500 feet in elevation during this final climb. The peak provided a nice view of Lake Hollywood in the distance to the south and the smoggy blanket that hovered over the valley to the north. The back of the sign was rather boring as you could see the scaffolding that held up the letters. We took a break and then descended to Tyrolian Tank for more photos. By the time we arrived back at the parking lot, it was a three-hour round trip that covered over seven miles. The weather could not have been better as there were few clouds, and the temperature was in the low 70s.

So, let me start out by saying that we get that local pros like Mike Byrne, Steve Rico and Wally Moore can play the standard 18 here (Yellow & Blue baskets) and come home around 14 or 15 under on a bad day, okay? But, for us mere mortals, it's slightly trickier. And that's because of two things; the LAKE/ISLAND hole and the potential for roll-offs. Yep, the joy of being "chavezed" right here T.O.. As of my most recent playing here in early December 2020, the grounds are immaculate and that dreaded, awful, disc-hungry palm tree populated creek on the north side of the course has been completely declawed, exposing the creek. This was always my biggest complaint about this course; if you pulled your drive in that creek on 5, 6, 14 or 15, you could be searching for your disc for literally half an hour (especially when the Westerly crosswind is blowing) Now, no more. Sure, the disc might still end up there, but now it's very easy to find. Holes 5 and 14 (playing up from the pit following the LAKE/ISLAND hole) should have an OB line demarcating the north side of that little trail ascending to the baskets, but it's been removed - so we cannot know the exact marking of the OB there at the moment. Ditto for the OB line continuing over the hill on that Yellow Basket position. But if I know these guys and their OCD propensity for keeping this course beautiful, those lines will be reinstalled very soon now that the major brush clearing project is complete. Some diatribe-lite on that LAKE/ISLAND hole (4 = lake / 13 = island). I've heard this explained to me a dozen times before, teeing up the Rabbit Flats / ProAM but, no matter how many times it's been dissected, it never fails that a disc lands somewhere ON the rock ring and opens new queries. This hole features a boulder-and-rock "ring" and, if you're "inside the ring" on 4 / or "outside the ring" on 13, you're OB and play your lie with a stroke added. BUT...there's no absolutely clear marking within and between those rocks themselves so, when a disc lands leaning on one of them, potentially outside or inside or who knows, sometimes the call can be tricky leaving you to make up your own ruling or getting a consensus from the other cats on your card. (If you're alone, and there's even the HINT of a question....Rico's Rule says it's always OB, lol) This ring could benefit from a very definitive rope line - or beer-cap-line - ANYTHING that clearly defines what's in and what's out. I would be more than happy to supply some of those beer caps. And, if this is too pedestrian for you cats, let's agree on champagne corks or something. Moving on... You'll find the "flats" (up top) in perfect condish' now. Everything's been raked, plowed, pruned, mulched and flattened to a disc golfers' heart's content. OH, AND THE ADDED JOY; there's a giant grassy soccer field to the east of holes 1 and 2 that provides ample space to air out your biggest drives and rollers after the round. (something you will not get an opportunity to do during the course of play thanks to the shorter nature of this course)
