To shoot good here (meaning under par, par, or 1-4 strokes over) takes a lot determination and a bit of luck too. The variance of pin positions, elevation changes, and obstacles will force you to change things up quite a bit when it comes to your game. The course plays out along the north part of the lake, next to the Coyote Point Launch area and adjacent campgrounds in the Coyote Point area of the lake. Hole 1 is located just off the large parking lot area, where the course sign and bulletin board is. The front nine features most of the elevation shots. Hole 1 shoots across a ravine to the basket located on the hillside across. Hole 5 is a blind downhill with the basket to the right. This makes us RHBH'ers either throw side arm or an extremely flippy disc that will turn over and glide right. Left handed players will LOVE this hole. Hole 9 once again has the player shoot across the ravine, this time headed back across the opposite direction. The basket is buried in the trees on the side of the hill. It's pretty much a blind shot that hopefully doesn't get caught in a tree or rolls down the hill. One of the most challenging holes on this course in my opinion is Hole 3 which forces the player to drive past a low hanging tree branch that is blocking most of your view. The basket is blocked by a large tree and bush straight out and to the left, which is extremely hard to get out of once you're under / in it. Best thing to do is throw something low and to the right, flexing back left at the end (RHBH). The back nine features the signature down hill shot on Hole 16 , a shot that one of my buddies called "Sylmar's Hole 11 On Steroids" (see my review of Veterans Park DGC). This 450 plus foot monster has 3 or 4 pin positions, two of which I have seen being located in the ravine past the dirt road (I believe the longest position) or perched up on a boulder to the left side. Best way to play this hole is to throw hard and to the right, having the disc fade back to the left. Winds in the afternoon can make your disc over-stable, so you might want to try throwing something under-stable. The back nine also features some tight tunnel shots that force you to keep it low and straight. Hole 18 comes across like a slap in the face with it's up hill fairway. Hole 10 is an odd downhill putter shot coming in at 150 feet...makes for an interesting start to the back 9. A few other things about Coyote Point DGC... - This is definitely a destination course. What I mean by that is that this is not a course you want to hit up on a whim. It's located in a state park, meaning you will need to pay $10-$15 to enter. If you're coming up from the LA / OC area, the drive will take at least an hour and a half. So be sure to leave early (especially after the fall time change, park closes at 5 PM). - There are some picnic tables located near Hole 18, perfect spot to camp out for the day. I would highly suggest splitting your round(s) up into two, taking a break between 9 holes. Enjoy a few beers...kick back...after all, you are playing in an amazingly beautiful place. - Summers can be brutal out here, so if you are playing during the summer months, be sure to have lots of water and sunscreen. - All holes have cement tee pads and signs. - Apparently when the lake is high, Holes 1,9, and 17 involve water hazards. The two times I've been here I have not witnessed this. - The course tends to be crowded during the mid to late afternoon hours with nearby campers. They also tend to run in groups greater than 5 and usually are novices. The earlier, the better when getting your round(s) in.

Even using UDisc could not tell us where the next t pad was and at any moment you could lose a disc due to the foliage. It's one of those courses where wow it's beautiful, so happy I did it, but man I never need to experience it again. I wish there was clarity on where the next t pad was or something that helped but otherwise just bring big thick socks and get ready for an unforgiving course.

Alumni park is on the Pepperdine University Campus. This is a beautiful park that over looks the…read morepacific ocean with amazing views. This is also where the graduation ceremonies are held. There is a lot of free parking up the hill on the street, the landscaping, flowers and trees are so beautiful. The park sits on 30 acre's and is surrounded by scenic coral trees, trails, hills and cliffs. There are two duck ponds there as well with a few benches but no restrooms are available. This is a great place to come and chill, bring a picnic and to relax and take in the sights of the city plus the low flying aircraft...Oh btw it's very windy up there.

Alumni Park is on the Pepperdine University campus in Malibu. It overlooks the Pacific and has…read moregorgeous sweeping views of the coastline. It is also the setting for graduation; however, for our visit we were forced inside due to the rare possibility of rain. And as you can see from the pictures on the day of, it didn't rain. Oh well. It's a great open space where I'm sure many a Frisbee are thrown or a football tossed. I know if I went to school here and lived on campus, finding my way to Alumni Park for study groups would be a regular occurrence.

I've been playing disc golf for a little over a year and heard a lot of things about Chavez Ridge,…read moreand most of it warning that it's not beginner-friendly, nor is it for the faint of heart, and I mean that literally because you'll get some really good cardio in just playing this course. Most of the course is on the ridge so you're rarely playing level ground. Wear good shoes. This course favors left-handed and forearm throwers. If you curve too far off to the left on most holes, you'll pay a very steep, and I mean steep price for it. I made sure to bring discs that can be easily replaced because you do have a chance of losing one or two. I'm surprised in a good way by the condition of the course. The tee-pads are rubber and long enough to make a good run-up while you throw, the baskets were all in great shape and there wasn't too much tagging. Really good players could easily play this entire course with mid-ranges and putters. I used my driver quite a bit, but I don't have much arm speed. I did OK. A few birdies, a few pars, and more bogies than I care to admit! It's very easy to get, "Chavezed," which means if your disc doesn't land flat it might decide to roll all the way down a steep hill and into the thick brush. Consider yourself forewarned! (; It's a dry and dusty course, but some of it is in the shade. Don't forget to carry some water. I was there on a Friday morning, with a few players around but not bad. I hear it gets really crowded on weekends. It's a little tricky to navigate. You'll need UDisk to find your way around, and even then it's a bit confusing. I was fortunate enough to join up with a group that knew the course so that made it a lot more fun. I used Google Maps directions: Chavez Ridge Disc Golf Course, Solano Canyon Dr &, Park Row Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90012. It put me really close to the first hole. You pull off the road and park head in. Be sure and use your parking brake! There's no water or restroom on the course. Too bad the city can't pony up for a porta-potty. I'm really glad I played here and I'm glad I waited to play it until I was somewhat ready. I'll be back. It's a great course and there are some spectacular views of LA and Dodger Stadium. This place is one of LA's gems!

If you've haven't been "Chavezed", you ain't livin'!…read more CRDGC plays along the ridge and steep slopes of Chavez Ravine. I'm mostly throwing putters off the tee and the occasional Roc3 or Atlas. That facilitates the tight lines and sticky landings needed here. I've watched many a' card-mate throw too many a faster-speed disc, only to watch it land, edge up and do The Chavez (that inevitable 100'-200' roll aaaaaalllllll the way down the hill). Similarly, 30' putts can bounce off the cage and suffer this fate...that's how steep the slopes are. Throwing mids and putters also helps avoid errant kicks off the trees which, with a higher speed disc will result in disaster here. So, the course is a real workout for your upshot/short game accuracy. I shot -5 (6 birds/1 bog') yesterday afternoon utilizing the above disc mix. Sadly, idiotic vandals have bruised this course pretty badly; Holes #15-18 are completely gone. And many tee signs throughout the course have been graffitti'd over. Abhorrent. On a happier note, new holes have been added; after you finish up the western slope, head up across the intersection to 4 newly added holes. They play up...then down, taking you back to the spot where we've always dropped down to hit the eastern slope's holes. These new holes are challenging - offering the first real chances to throw a faster speed disc and air it out a bit. Many trees have been removed recently due to blight and fire precautions. The pre-blight course was, IMO, more difficult but this newly updated track presents a variety of risk-reward options that still equal a ton of fun. I had a blast. Shout out to the course curators - great work and thank you!

The park is clean and the play area is situated well away from the street, so for safety I love that. It's not the most shaded, so on a hot summer day I'd say you definitely have to plan your visit so you don't scorch. They also have a lovely walking trail around the length of the park. The downside would be no restrooms (boo!) but the good outweighs the bad here. Lovely park, quiet neighborhood, I can't wait to visit again!

Perhaps the greatest concentration of Bros and frisbees you'll find anywhere in the United States…read more This was a really nice setup, and despite the concentration of Bros, our group with both males and females/adults and kids, felt welcome. A lot of fun, even for beginners. There is a website with etiquette tips and a map of the course that you should check out before heading out. Some of tees aren't that well marked for first timers, but we found that others playing the course were very happy to help us out. Bro-tastic!
