To say that this was a disappointment is an understatement. Let me list off the problems and one…read morepositive. 1. Driving range is horrible. $12.00 for medium bucket! Looks like it has never been maintained. Just udderly bad! 2. Place of play. Took us (as a 3 someone) 5.5 hours to play a round of golf. The marshalls out there not sure what they are doing. The two group ahead of us looked like they never played golf before in their life. We waited on each hole for at least 5 to 10 mins as we watch the group ahead of us hit their balls maybe 15 yards each time. 3. Fairways. What fairways. Can we say dirt with a sprinkle of grass? Have they not heard of water? You know the H2O stuff? I hear that it really makes stuff grow! 4. The greens. Super slow. I mean how slow can you possibly make them? 5. The plaques on each tee box where worning and old. You could hardly tell how what the yardage was from black down to red. 6. The carts had no GPS and looked old and worn. Now the positive... the food at the turn. Got a 1/2 sandwich (ham, cheese, lettuce, and tomato). It was pretty good and they didnt price gouge you. Oh and the lady running the bar was fantasic. The club house empolyees could use some training on being more friendly. Needless to say that this was my first and last time playing Cottonwood. I thought Castle creek was in bad shape but this is right up there!!!! Save your 75 dollars and play somewhere else. You have been warned!

Very disappointing experience with the starter and customer service…read more My friends and I came to enjoy a casual round of golf and were respectful throughout our visit. After we had already paid, the starter, Jim, stopped our group and told us that a friend who was accompanying us on foot would need to pay the full green fee as well as additional fees for a cart and clubs. This was particularly frustrating because he was recovering from a broken back and only intended to walk the course. Jim then approached other members of our group and informed them that each player needed to have a full set of clubs or they would not be allowed to play. These requirements were not communicated before payment and felt unnecessarily rigid. Overall, the experience left us with the impression that the staff was more focused on maximizing charges than providing a welcoming customer experience. We were simply looking for an enjoyable and affordable round of golf, but the way these issues were handled made the experience very disappointing.

Played at Sea N Air and had one of the worst starter interactions I've experienced. Our tee time…read morewas 9:04, and by 9:06--while our last player (all women, by the way) was still on the tee box--the starter came up rushing us and telling people in our group to hurry up. Meanwhile, the group ahead of us had already started late and was still halfway down the fairway. So instead of addressing the actual delay, he chose to come after a group of women who were right on time and still in the process of teeing off. Completely unnecessary and not a great look. He even told us we couldn't take practice swings. At that point, it stops being about pace of play and starts feeling like we're just being singled out and rushed for no reason. It felt targeted, unprofessional, and honestly pretty disrespectful. Being rushed before you've even started sets the tone for the entire round--and not in a good way. To top it off, every green had just been freshly aerated. That's understandable for maintenance, but it absolutely affects play, and there was zero heads-up about it. Paying to putt on punched greens while also being rushed off the first tee? Not exactly a great experience. The irony is that when we finished, he told us we kept a great pace of play. So clearly his snap judgment was wrong--and he couldn't even acknowledge it or apologize. If you're going to manage pace, do it fairly and accurately. And if the course conditions aren't great, be upfront about it. This felt like poor management all around.

The moment you step into the clubhouse you realize the vast history of the location. For example, some parts are in need of major repair, but there are also nearly 100 years of player trophies and accomplishments on display in a large lobby time has not touched (nor cleaners, painters, renovators...but I digress). Don't miss the unbeatable hilltop views out the back of hole 1 and hole 18 side-by-side with the cityscape in the background. The same view can be seen from the restrooms, giving this place the best view from the loo award. I played the regulation 18 (they also have a nine hole executive course). The course was in good to very good condition. It's a fun, unique track and there are some very narrow holes, but fair enough because they are shorter. Accuracy off the tee is favored over length on most of the holes. There are also a few challenging elevation changes, but not many blind approach shots, which I don't think anyone enjoys. It's a fun track that keeps you on your toes. Many holes are lined by canyons so errant shots on those will be lost. Another unique aspect is that Balboa Park sits under the landing path of the airport. I tried to catch an airplane in my photos and it was pretty easy to in most all of them. Pace of play was fine at 4.5 hours on a weekday afternoon. Staff was friendly, but they deal with a lot of people so I could see how things could go sideways as some reviews have mentioned. Just exercise the golden rule. If you play golf and live in San Diego, I say this is a must play at least once. I'll be back again when I'm in the right mood.
