I sent an email asking if I could launder some Oxford shirts to understand the shrinkage (very common with custom shirts ex: proper cloth where they actually ask you to launder to understand fit) Nothing in the return policy and no response so I had them washed and pressed professionally. I purchased a shetland heritage quality sweater 3 weeks ago. I spot cleaned my sweater with cold water and wool wash and the dye from the sweater came right out leaving a clearly lightened spot. I'm a long time knitter and understand how to clean wool and know that this should not happen. I'm not sure how a sweater is supposed to be heritage quality if it can't be cleaned. I called the company to ask about this quality issue and they basically blew me off. Couldn't be less impressed and won't be making any future purcahses. read more

Remember when there were University Shops that sold fine, classic woolens, college regalia, and broadcloth shirts . . . they were staples for anyone drawn to classic clothing. It's not fair to wrap that up in the term preppy. Rather, these places stood for quality and something special that stood one apart from the pack. It use to be that "clothes made the man," an old expression. This store harkens back and it's stock includes European brands that date back decades or more--rain gear, trachten/loden, crew necks, fair isles, merino, cashmere fr Scotland. It is important to have great footwear. It is amazing how many times you see someone who has attempted to put themselves together but the whole thing is detracted by poor quality and poorly maintained shoes. At O'Connell's they have many great footwear lines but this review relates to a recent purchase of a pair of Alden's to pair with my British Tan Chinos. The people at the store take great pride in being sure that you look polished and well put together. I recommend them and the products they sell. You can't do better. read more

Finding this real, traditional men's store was a miracle. First, they have a huge selection of high quality clothes sensible arranged (unlike the men's section in department stores-the places should just die!). The staff are knowledgeable and helpful without being pushy. Luckily, I'm fairly frequently in Buffalo, so this will become my "go to" store for quality men's wear. I grew up in Buffalo when the store was O'Connell, Lucas & Chelf. My dad would shop there and I did later too, as a preppy high schooler. The store was a Buffalo institution, known for its high quality, exclusive brands and top notch tailoring. Fast forward some 40 years later, and I am living now in California. My latest pair of madras, patchwork shorts were wearing thin and I thought... where could I buy a higher quality pair? I remembered as a kid getting them at O'Connells... After some web searching, bingo. O'Connells showed up, with the Main St. address in Buffalo, and their line of menswear looked ever so familiar (though don't think they carry Sero shirts anymore?) I ordered the shorts, they arrived... were a bit small... easily returned/exchanged, and love them. The high quality is unmistakable. No cheap imports. I have since bought a Buffalo logo polo shirt; afterall it was my hometown. And my wife bought me a gorgeous Viyella shirt for my birthday. Three stars because the pricing is a little higher than it should be. Four stars for the actual merchandise. They have a terrific selection of men's clothing and accessories. Mostly higher end. Great ties to choose from. Nice selection of belts. The employees here tend to know their business which makes for easy shopping for men. I've never been into O'Connell's but I can tell you that they're great to deal with. I ordered a pair of Quoddy boat shoes and they had my weird size (12.5) and they were at my place within a few days. I'm sure I'll be ordering from them in the future. It was very nice to deal with such nice folks on the phone. If I'm ever in Buffalo I'll be sure to stop in a see what they've got in person. I was able to find an American made pair of Quoddy boat shoes in my size (14) that wasn't even available on the Quoddy website. Fast delivery and no problems. I've only ever done business with O'Connell's online or over the phone, but I've had nothing but good experiences with them. They have a large variety of high quality, traditional menswear, made mostly in North America or Europe. It's unfortunate that there aren't more stores like this left around the US. read more

I love the store. I wish I could make a pilgrimage to Buffalo just to visit. Incredible selection (although the common sizes can quickly go). They sent me the wrong trousers, when I emailed to ask if I hadn't gotten the wrong weight, they immediately admitted the mistake, sent me the right pair Express Overnight with a prepaid return box. Even better, I love the pants! My absolute faves. I only found them 6 months or so ago, and have purchased a couple pair of Bill's khakis and own label flannels. My only other complaint, I purchased a fedora they sold as, "O'Connell's" but when it arrived, the hat had a Bailey's label, which is not my favorite brand. A mixed bag I went there one afternoon. Being darker skin and in my 20s, naturally they gave me the suspicious look and literally followed me around the store- made me very uncomfortable. Mind you, I was wearing a high end suit so i cant imagine if I dressed casually. ended up buying a few hundered worth of stuff I think the positive reviews are either from people used to shopping at JC Penny since buffalo isn't exactly full of high end stores On to the goods- there was some neat stuff- but only the mens stuff was any good. Vegtable dyed madras shorts. Vineyard vines belts and ties customized for buffalo. Also some new old stock (but be careful colors can be worn out on some stuff i assume they may have been subject to extreme temperatures in attics or basements--i didn't discover this until i unpackaged what i bought and found fade lines over where the shirts were folded) Much of their stuff was labeled by their house brand. My opinion is that is was quite overpriced. For example I bought a bunch of shirts from gitman brothers (made in USA for $65 each) they were selling the exact same shirts with their brand (even confirmed they were made by gitman) for nearly DOUBLE the price. Also the store is a messy disaster haphazardly stocked floor to ceiling. It makes marshals look like a hermes boutique in comparison. They have several season old items they not only sell at full price, but i noticed some were even marked up past MSRP . For the prices you'd expect good customer service, but the few employees were too busy taking photos of the stuff to sell it online than help you find what you need. And even though the return policy on the website says they do refunds, in store they would only do store credit--so be sure before you buy In buffalo i much prefer Napoli's on transit rd for a more modern style. But Overall, if you want high end mens boutique clothes my recommendation is save your money and go to toronto/nyc/cleveland/pittsburgh read more

This is the kind of men's store that I forgot existed. It is a classic old school store with a deep inventory and a variety of brands that are difficult to find elsewhere. It is the only store I have found that carries Magee Irish tweed, except for J Press and J Press typically carries only one or two pieces in their stores. It's been many years since I've been to a store like this and it couldn't be different from mall stores or dumbed down self-consciously upscale competitors like Brooks Brothers. The customer service is excellent both by phone and in person. There is convenient street parking and the store is not difficult to find. If you're in the area, it is worth a visit. read more

Their merchandise is premium in cost, but the customer service is purely second rate: it has been on the decline of late, with an undercurrent of apathy and cynicism very much evident. Not the most equitable arrangement for the customer, as you'll see. My latest - and last - experience is as follows: I paid nearly $600.00 for a couple pairs of trousers and the alterations were incorrect (I requested 2 inch cuffs - I received 1 5/8 inch). Okay, mistakes happen, but what happened next turned the tide and lost them a loyal customer. The associate on the phone tried to limit THEIR liability for THEIR mistake by telling me that the ONLY option was to send in the trousers to extend the cuff as originally ordered (there is NOT enough material left to do that - an experienced professional would not even have had to see them to know that). I then countered with the correct option: I return this pair in exchange for a new pair, correctly altered. No can do, said the associate: they were (conveniently) all out of stock without a clue as to when or if they'll replenish their supply. I then wanted to return them for a full refund, insisting that he e-mail me a return UPS label as there is no reason why I should have to pay for their error. He agreed to do so. I never received it. With experiences like this, you know it's time to bail. Apparently, O'Connell's is coasting on their former reputation and, like many "name" companies in today's economic climate, that will only get you so far. O'Connell's has lost my business. read more

Generally have had good service ordering by phone. On my second order this month I specified at the time of my order a different address to the salesperson. When notified by UPS later that day that the order was being sent to the wrong address, I contacted the salesperson immediately to correct the mistake. The package still went to the wrong city days later. Response by salesperson was "mistakes happen". No offer was made that they would contact UPS to get the delivery rushed to me before I left town the following week. Great products but their attitude when they make an error is indifference at best. read more

This is a vindictive store with the worst customer service. In October I ordered two belts the same size. When they arrived one belt was two inches longer than the other. They said one belt (elastic) grew longer while on display. Really - I have the email to prove it. It any event they sent me a new belt the right size and charged me for shipping the new one and charged me for returning the old one. When I complained they were surly but finally acquiesced. Two days ago I ordered items 2nd day air because I was going on vacation. They accepted my order. When two days later I inquired of the order status the same surly person emailed me cancelling my order and stating that they did not want my business. Although I am disappointed to vacation without these items I can take solace in the fact that I will have a couple hundred dollars more to spend that O'Connell's will not. As to the surly company service guy. I will be in the Caribbean on a cruise with someone else's product and he will be in Buffalo losing money for his company! read more

With respect to their clothing, especially their ties, I would give O'Connell's four stars. However, their website/online shopping is most user unfriendly. It requires a person to create an account or shop via their account. I set up an account years ago and have forgotten my password. However, when I try to reset the PW, using my correct email address the site tells me it is incorrect. As such, I cannot shop online. STOP requiring the use of an account and let people shop as a guest. Now I have to wait to place my order via phone, which is less convenient than online shopping. Make it easier, not harder. Once you stop the account requirement, your rating will easily go to a 4-star rating read more

This shop (web site) has the most beautiful men's clothing of any site - anywhere. Granted, the shop may not be for everyone. I'm 54 years old, have been blessed with a wonderful profession & have maintained a preppy (if you will) style my ENTIRE life. I currently have a "wish list" with O'Connells worth about $30,000.00 It's NO JOKE. I certainly won't spend that on my next purchase but I sure as heck could if I threw caution & good reason to the wind LOL. My point is, this shop WILL have my business for 100% of my attire purchases for as long as I live. ordered a lambs wool cardigan sweater -made in Scotland- as online purchase- this is a hard to find item- cardigans being old school- but im old school- the quality and fit were as good as might be hoped for and better- and the price was acceptable for the garment . the $8.00 flat rate shipping fair as fair can be-I have looked near and far for years for the real deal classic mens sweaters -thanx o'connells - I have now ordered a oxford shirt and am eager for same quality as above! read more
