Severely downgrading my rating following my third and most recent experience with OC McDonald. I do not want to recommend their services due to some extremely questionable billing policies. We had a steady leak coming from the gasket of our hydronic heater. The technician arrived bright and early, just past 8 am, which was greatly appreciated. Upon looking at the leak for a few minutes, he determined that he had to obtain some parts back at the shop. The round trip took him about an hour and a half. We live a good distance from the shop, and he went for parts during the height of the Bay Area morning commute. Upon his return, he successfully fixed the leak. I calculated his total work time at approximately 1.5 hours. When I received the invoice, I was shocked to see that they had billed me for 3 hours of labor. I called the shop to ask if it was indeed their policy to charge the customer for the technician's drive time. It seems ridiculous that the shop billed me $150/hour while the technician sat in morning traffic. The billing department only knocked off $50, which is semi insulting. I am still extremely disappointed that I have to pay for 3 hours of labor when the technician was only performing actual work for half of that time!This policy seems to gouge the customer way beyond my comfort level. smh. Scheduled an appointment today for an O.C. McDonald representative ("James") to come to our home to discuss adding a new heating and AC system. We have an older home, and this likely would entail both ducting as well as AC and heating units. The appointment was for between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. "James" was a no show. I called the company at about 1 p.m. I was told that "James" had an "emergency" and that they had called me and left a message that they needed to reschedule. It is now 7:30 p.m. and still there is no message on my phone. I always try to do business with established, local companies. O.C. McDonald is one of those local companies in San Jose. OC McDonald came over to our house on July 25, 2019 to trouble shoot our air conditioning unit. I agreed to do a refill of the liquid coolant as I was hoping the technician actually found the leak but about 3 weeks later, our A/C unit was not blowing out cold air again. I called Debbie and requested an estimate for a new condenser unit and upflow A-coil ( the tech already noted what unit I would need for a replacement if the recharge of the liquid coolant didn't fix the problem). After 2 more calls to this company, no reply yet and it is now September 30, 2019. I guess they are too busy for my $10,000+ replacement project. We suspected a behind-the-wall pipe leak and called O.C. McDonald for an estimate. Jason arrived within 5-10 minutes of the appointed time and was professional throughout. He found the source of the leak and recommended accessing the pipe from an adjacent bathroom to avoid having to remove tiles. Jason estimated a few hours for the fix & we hired him on the spot. He did a great job -- even reinforcing the newly installed pipe to reduce the force on it from a somewhat heavy showerhead. Though he doesn't patch walls, he put back the portion of the wallboard that was removed in a way that makes it a straighforward patch & paint followup job. Cost was a few hours plus parts, but well worth the savings in potential damage to the house. Even though I'd never called O.C. McDonald before, I had some confidence from both the reviews and the fact that they do both residential and commercial work. Debbie, James and the whole staff are great. Our A/C pooped out this late Spring. We wanted to try a fix as we were not sure if we were going to be moving. Finally we decided to look at 3 options which they offered. We selected best one for us. What they quoted was exactly what we were charged. (You don't see that happening too often these days.) They had things up and running quickly, even in this crazy year of product/equipment shortages and delays. We were even trained on proper use of our thermostat and they buttoned up everything clean and neat. We even received some great preventative maintenance tips. I just have to say that O.C. McDonald saved the day this week during the heat wave. An AC unit went out in an office building that I manage in Los Altos and O.C. was able to make it out the next day to repair the unit. I called three other companies and they were booked out for weeks due to the heat wave but O.C. made it work to get out there the next day and fix the unit. Also, Larry took his time to find the breaker box for the unit when no one knew where it was. I have been communicating with Debbie in the office and she is very responsive and takes immediate action. Debbie has been able to schedule the technician the next day each time I have called. My wife and I have been using O C McDonald for at least the last 15 years, but a recent experience reminded me of how responsive, concerned and professional the company and their team are. Last Thursday our gardener called my attention to a spot next to our water meter where the water was bubbling up out of the ground and pouring out onto the lawn. Called the SJ Water Company who came out Friday morning and informed me that we had a very bad leak and that he was turning off the water to our house immediately. And that the leak was our responsibility - not that of the water company. :-( In somewhat of a panic (no water all weekend?!?!) I called O C McDonald and they had James out that afternoon. He isolated the leak, replaced the broken pipes and was able to turn the water back on to our house in time for us to have water to cook dinner. One of the things that I love about this company is that they are very family oriented, and consider all of their employees to be part of that family. Also, just came to mind, the technician never wrote what time he left my parents house only what time he arrived. That way his maybe 10 minute of time looking at the water heater at my elderly parents house charging for one hour and the problem was never fixed. The owner stated this technician has been with him for many years and one of his best. If this was his best I would hate to see his worst. I don't enjoy making negative reviews, but so sad when this could've been so easily handle. He did the work quickly and cleanly, and we now have a very warm home. Another company quoted us on a much more expensive furnace, and Greg explained why that was not required in our situation. This other company also quoted us on hazardous material removal to the tune of $600 - also a cost that Greg said was not required and he explained why. We knew we were going to have to bite the bullet and make this rather expensive purchase, but Greg made the whole thing quick and painless, and we felt confident in our decision. I did that the other day and was really disappointed; the problem was un-fixed and the reason not well-explained. I called scheduling at OCM and got Debbie, who, in spite of their usual full schedule, was able to schedule me with master plumber, Jason, who appear at my door the next morning, very early in my assigned time slot. I had problems with a toilet for 6 months. Two licensed guys could do nothing but replace wax ring. "Don" came out and went the extra mile to pull toilet, put it up on saw horse and test the bowl. Don't rely on this company. Our kitchen sink broke last Thursday. It was after-hours, so we left a message with their service. No one bothered to call us back, so at 10:30, we proactively called them. They had no record of the message we left the night before. They said they could have someone out between 1pm and 4pm, so we made sure that someone was at our home in that window. At 2pm, their dispatch department called us to let us know they don't service our condo complex, so they won't be coming. Of course, at that late hour, it was impossible to find another plumber unless we paid after-hours fees. They then just called me to find out if anyone ever returned our phone call from Thursday night. Are you kidding me? We've been without a kitchen sink all weekend. These guys have no clue what customer service is. Don't trust them in your home, if they bother to show up. read more

I had to get a 40-gallon water heater replaced and had my home warranty plumber come out to give me an estimate. They said tops $700 for labor (not including the water heater) and a friend suggested OCM. I should have asked for an estimate before because if I knew before hand what it would cost, I would not have used them, but instead I trusted that they would be fair. Instead a month later I receive a bill that is at least 2 times the cost for the install. I spoke with their billing department and they could not see that they were grossly overcharging for labor. Worst than lawyers. To be fair, the quality of work was very good so if you want to pay twice the price, be my guest. read more

Daniel Voss was knowledgeable and honest. Found the problem with our toilet and fixed it quickly. The water shut-off wasn't shutting off, so he fixed that too. He also fixed our bathtub spout (which was incorrectly installed by another plumber)! I won't hesitate to call them for any other plumbing issues! Good people and reasonable prices. OC McDonald installed my AC unit 3 years ago. I found out today it was not to code. I asked them to help me fix this and was told by me white that it "is not their problem and they do not have to do work to code". When selling me my $20+ k unit they stressed 98% of their installs are without a permit. I stressed it still needed to be to code. They said "of course". Now it is a different story. City of San Jose wants to take OUT my AC. OC McDonald per me white doesn't even employ a person who can help me get a permit or make this right. GO ANYWHERE BUT HERE!!!!!!!!!! I have used O.C. McDonald for several years now. After a few bad experiences with other plumbing companies, I remembered that my father liked O.C. McDonald, so I turned to them and haven't looked back. Each time I've had to call them, the technician has been very nice, very professional and knew what he was doing. The job has always been done correctly and at a decent and fair price. I've never had any problems contacting the office or setting up an appointment. My latest experience was this past weekend. I had an "emergency" with my toilet and wasn't going to be able to take time off work for them to come during regular business hours, nor did I think the toilet would last that long. The dispatcher contacted the technician on call who called me back within seconds. We discussed the problem and he gave me an estimated arrival time, which he met. I might add here, that not only was it a weekend, but it was Super Bowl Sunday! I hadn't realized that when I called, though in reality, I would have still needed someone to come out as the toilet float assembly was gushing water and the valve to shut the water off wouldn't shut it off completely. Greg was my technician. He was VERY gracious for having to come out on a Super Bowl weekend. He was prompt, professional, kept me informed of what he was doing all along the way, was patient with me which I always appreciate, and he explained the pricing and explained the work he did. And, as I said above, I've had that same experience with each of the technicians I've had. I'll be needing my furnace replaced soon, and I know who to call. read more

Hired them to fix problems with our 1940's floor heaters. They came out the next day for an estimate. James our tech, arrived at the scheduled time and even called 10 min. before his arrival. What a concept lol. He gave us several options, some that they weren't able to do, so that was nice. James was very professional, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with. We were thinking about getting air conditioning, and decided to get estimates. After 2 totally outrageous estimates, and getting the run around on top of it, we decided to try OC McDonald. They had installed the heater 4 yrs ago. Greg came and went to work getting what he would need for the estimate. The heater is in the attic and I knew it was going to be a harder job to accomplish since the attic is small with not alot of clearance. The estimate came back over $2000.00 less than our last one! I called O C McDonald for an estimate for work on two old furnaces at two homes. The technician called me back within 5 minutes and went out to the property that very day. He called me and explained what the possible fixes could be but also said they would be very expensive. Both of the furnaces work fine but are not up to present day code. He even made a trip to the local building department to see what it would take to bring them up to code. He gave me the options and told me that since they are working fine and have been for 40 years, to leave them alone and save the money to replace them down the road. He could have given me an estimate for thousands of dollars of work but didn't. I appreciate his honesty and O C McDonald is my "go to " furnace repair/replacement company from now on! read more
