Welp. Some low life stole my iPhone wallet with my license and cards in it. I had to go down to the precinct to file a complaint. Luckily the place wasn't crowded that evening so the process was rather quick. The officers were polite and very helpful. Detective Stewart took me through the step by step process and thoroughly explained what would happen and followed up with me thereafter. The person was apprehended and I just needed to give this precinct and Detective Stewart a big shout out. I know that there is a love hate relationship with the PD but they put their lives on the line every single day and witness unfathomable things on a daily basis. These officers at this precinct treated everyone with dignity from the homeless person filing a report to me and another person. There was absolutely no difference in quality of care or etiquette. I applaud them. It isn't easy being in a field where you are the every day heroes doing great things for people every single day but you get condemn for the actions of some bad apples and have to suffer the consequences. Avoid reporting larceny cases here. They simply don't care (or maybe don't want on their precinct's record). I came in during a quiet morning to report that my rent checks were stolen and altered after being dropped in a USPS mailbox within their district. I wasn't expecting a full investigation -- I just wanted the incident on record, thinking it might help prevent future cases. While the sergeant I initially spoke with when I walked in was polite, the rest of the experience was disappointing. I waited for over an hour while being told they were "busy" by the booking officer who set there doing other things, effectively ignored, yet I could clearly hear joking around and saw multiple officers and detectives walking back and forth. I was the only person there trying to report a crime, and eventually I just left. Maybe the response is different if you've been physically assaulted, but for larceny crimes, don't expect much to anything. As someone who has always supported law enforcement, this experience genuinely made me lose some respect especially for my neighborhood precinct. read more

Surprisingly, I've had another brush with the law; actually, I'm still on the right side of it. I was sitting waiting for the M8 bus yesterday and clearing some text messages off my phone when a teenage thug-in-training swooped in, grabbed my phone, hit me in the chest, and ran west toward the river. He rounded the corner and disappeared. I was like, "Wha...? [Expletive] you!" The man waiting for the bus with me let me use his phone to call 911 ("You gotta report this," he said) and some officers from the 6th Precinct picked me up. I hadn't seen the guy's face, only the back of his T-shirt (pink,) but we cruised around the park before we gave up. It's crazy; I don't understand what the kid wanted with my phone, but I guess they were taking anything they could get their hands on in hopes it was an iPhone. (Supposedly there's been a rash of robberies like this lately in the West Village.) As soon as I got the chance, I reported it stolen to my phone company and it was blocked--stupid kid. The Sixth Precinct has been great in all of this--efficient and professional. Wonder what they're like when a real crime occurs--but I don't wanna go there. If that's as bad as it gets, I'll live with it; I wasn't hurt, and the single item taken was totally replaceable. read more

My bar was hit by a burglar early Tuesday morning. I just happened to check the cameras moments after he left and called 911 immediately. The 6th Precinct got there so fast he wasn't able to come back to collect the safe he'd left outside. All the officers were truly lovely to work with, and Officer Dan Park, in a show of impressive strength, even managed to get the safe back where it belonged. Detective Ryan Glas was calm and helpful, and I was left feeling very confident he would do his best to get this guy off the streets. I called requesting information and the woman who answered was incredibly patient and lovely to speak with. She encouraged me to come down to the station to speak with an officer. Upon arrival I spoke to another woman behind the front desk and she too was trying to help me and was very kind. The sergeant however was not. He was rude to me and to his staff. I hope I never have ANOTHER crime committed AGAINST me because he was horrible to interact with and made me feel like the criminal when I was the victim. Horrible. That being said both woman were lovely and I am thankful for their service and assistance. read more

After getting mugged and thwarting the mugger, the officers from this precinct took me to the station to get my account of the incident. The officers were very nice to me, making sure I got back my much needed money that I had just retrieved from the ATM before I got mugged. I got my wallet back without anything missing. They were kind enough to let me use their facilities and making sure I was safe especially since I am still using my cane. They let me used the desk phone at the front to call my mother to let her know why I was three hours late. Thankfully the mugger was caught and arrested thanks to eyewitnesses. read more

On the Saturday before last, 2/24/18, I had to go to the 6th Precinct with much needed help. I can't say enough about the officers that were soo kind, patient and understanding. We're talking from the boss on duty that day, sergeants, two police officers, and even the civilian help. The officers even followed-up on my claim. I've never had a problem with the law, and was taught they are the first ones you go to when you need help. I can't say enough about the 6th Precinct. God Bless them all. Mary M. Came in to file a police report over some Bank card fraud (I recommend you all btw get a card with a chip), was a brown partitian separating the waiting area from the officers/support staff. I had to wait 5 minutes before an office came out and took down a report from me. I felt they handled it very professionally. I had to call the next day to get the police report number, and got it easily on the phone. Ultimately, I used that report to help me get the money back and am happy going to the Police station as a victim went as smooth as it did. read more

Name calling e.g. 'a.hole' by officer about his sargeant observed mayors office + citizens review board aware rude not courteous nor professional overall unprofessional disregarding the actual law abounds word to the wise. read more

Bravo NYPD for handing out traffic tickets like hot cakes! Got a driving while texting ticket last Friday while sitting stuck in traffic. I got a call and had the phone in my hands and not near my head BUT I wasn't moving. PERIOD! He said even a slight movement with phone in hand is considered "texting". LOL There were three cars in front of me getting the same texting ticket by a walking nypd (walking lol) ...on the way to the Holland tunnel during a Friday evening RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC! Yesterday in the pre-dawn, our frail 95 year old mother with end stage dementia, who lived with us passed away in her sleep. We had been caring for her at home for two years. We were unable to afford to place her in a nursing home - having been refused any help from Medicaid. The NYPD personnel who showed up: also the detectives, EMT, Medical Examiners, Coroner, the FDNY, in fact all concerned behaved with the utmost sensitivity, offering comfort as they dotted the i's, crossed the t's and got on with the tasks required.Their compassion was deeply appreciated by my exhausted sister and I. They, likewise were impressed by the way we had looked after dear mom. And, right here I want to give a shout out to Officer Bukowski who sat with me quietly talking, once everyone had left. She helped me remain steady and calm during that heartbreakingly tough last hour while we waited for the funeral director to enter our home, "bag and tag" and take mom's remains away: for always. Officer Bukowski was nothing less than wonderful. When the funeral director left, I turned to her, asking one of New York's Kindest, "may I hug you?" I embraced her warmly. As I did so, I could feel the bullet proof shields she was wearing on her chest and back, under the blue uniform. Reminding me that while this incident would be written up as a sad, but peaceful visit - the men and women of NYPD risk their lives every day for fellow New Yorkers. We will never forget June 1st. Nor will we forget Officer Bukowski. My sister and I thank her, from the bottom of our hearts. read more

I attended the preicnt to receive some information as a visitor of the city. The uniformed officer couldn't get off her phone for long enough to acknowledge my existence. And it took me walking in and interrupting the non-uniformed staff members conversation about what she was doing in her weekend to get her to talk to me. I wasn't wasting their time, but I certainly felt terrible afterwards. read more

I came to file a report after my cell phone was stolen. I met first with the woman at the front desk who was helpful and listened to my entire story while taking notes for the report. They then directed me to the detective, who took additional notes. The next day, a very help sergeant called to follow up and close out the report. I appreciated the fact that even though it was a very minor crime, they completed all the applicable paperwork and made me feel as though my case would get attention. read more

the cops/detectives here are virtually useless if you're dealing with any kind of petty larceny. save yourself the time and the headache and just resign yourself to the fact that no one will do anything to help. they won't investigate, but they will waste about an hour of your time. and depending on who you encounter, they might also be rude and distracted. read more
