While in the area I found someone's ID on the ground and returned it here. The officer I spoke with inside was courteous and thanked me for dropping it off. Hopefully, that person's ID was returned to them. The 19th Precinct serves the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The precinct is one of the most densely populated residential areas in Manhattan. The southern part of the precinct has a large commercial area and features Madison, Lexington, and 3rd Avenues, which are well known for their shopping and assorted businesses. There's definitely multi resident in apartments or you couldn't afford the two bedroom. With the current economy crime may be on the rise but the data shows it's way down in NYC. I'm not sure about my neighborhood so I'm glad NYPD is showing their presence. read more

Circa 3:55pm on Sunday, May 18th, 2025 I was nearly run over by a Precinct 19 car while walking with right of way in the middle of the intersection of 65th and Third Avenue. I was walking from the NE side to the NW intersection and the police car was making a left turn onto 3rd. I had close to 20 seconds left on the walking signal, was walking briskly and was very visible in bright colors. At an accelerated speed the police car came barreling into the intersection like it was actively trying to run me over. The driver appeared to have no patience and actually sped up as it was turning in the intersection (with me in the middle of it). After nearly missing me the car managed to drive only about 20 feet onto 3rd Avenue before it got stuck in traffic that was backed up from the red light at 66th down to nearly 65th. I'm writing this review because I am so disappointed in the local police. On Saturday, July sixth, I was walking back home and saw a police car outside the Duane Reade near my apartment. I noticed because I planned to go there a few minutes later, after I had first gone home. And indeed I did. The police car was still there. After I was inside for perhaps 10 minutes, I saw a man and woman, I think in their early 50s, literally stuffing slim Jims-a processed meat- and some other items into a huge Fresh Direct bag -and maybe another bag. I was perhaps 5 feet away from them, but one was turned away from me. As I was leaving the store, the police car was still there. At about 6:05pm I tapped on the window on the driver side, standing in the street. I said something like: "I don't know why you're here, but if it's to protect the store, you should know there are two people inside stealing a lot of items including slim Jims and putting them into a Fresh Direct bag." When I tapped on the window, the two officers were very nice. But when I told them this, the officer in the passenger seat said something to the effect that they had to go on a call right then, and could not investigate. I was surprised. How often do you have someone willing to be witness who can point out someone stealing? A moment later, the window was rolled back up and, as I crossed the street, they sped away with their lights on. Maybe, but I have a hard time believing it, since they didn't seem in a rush until after I told them what I'd seen. So then a few minutes later at 6:13pm, I called the 19th Precinct -somewhat bummed out and upset. I spoke to the officer answering the general number. I told him about this incident, the thievery I'd watched, and that the officers in a police car with a plate that read 4773 had sped off rather than investigate. He told me, as they had, they probably were called to someplace important to go to. I told him that it seemed odd given the timing. At some point he told me he didn't like my way of characterizing this event. I'm sure I did at least suggest that I believed they had deliberately left upon my informing what I had seen. He then related that I could not file a police report because I was not the manager of the store. I then asked whether that prevented the police from investigating to begin with (?). I gave an example: if I saw someone breaking into a jewelry store from the outside, couldn't I call that in or would I have to be the owner or manager? He seemed at a loss for that. I suspect this was a minor example of the so-called blue wall. But of course I could be all together wrong, and perhaps those officers were at that moment called to handle some important criminal activity. Have you noticed all the stories in the newspapers about shoplifting and petty thievery? I have. I have also noticed that many stores have empty shelves and not as good a selection as in the past -often items I want (recently, for example, flavored Red Bull). A lot of quality food items are missing even on the Upper East Side from supermarkets. (For example, across the street is a D'agostino's that has gone precipitously down market over the last five or six years.) Prices for goods are up incredibly, everywhere. I've had conversations with employees at that Duane Reade and other stores where they explain how this is the result, at least in part, of people coming in with big bags and just running away with items. This time I saw it. Employees have been told not to try to stop them, and that's understandable. But the police? I really didn't believe it when a Duane Reade employee said they (the police) really don't want to deal with this kind of petty larceny. But now I do. I've lived on the Upper East Side for more than 25 years. Over the years, I think I had one occasion to contact the police, and they responded at my building and did a good job. But this incident that I am writing about, above, is profoundly disturbing. Perhaps such criminals don't deserve jail time -at least for the first few times- but they certainly need to be detained, go through the criminal court system and perhaps given meaningful community service(?). Most dangerous precinct for pedestrians (mostly older) and I never see cops on the street here. Walking in the Upper East side is like the Wild West. The few times I have seen cops in the hood they were blocking the bike lane or blowing through red lights. One time I dared to ask them about it (blocking bike lane) they insulted me and implied they wouldn't help me in an emergency. I've seen these cops driving while texting, parked in front of fire hydrants (empty car) for weeks!! As someone who has just moved here, I have to say I am not impressed at all. Think I'm just some malcontent? Google "NYPD Moving Violations" for this precinct's pitiful ticketing record (2 speeding tickets in August??). Meanwhile five pedestrians are dead already this year, twice what the next dangerous precincts see. No charges files against the drivers, of course. Do these cops ever leave the station house? I was trying to make a police report today and a cop standing in front of the building asked what I needed. I briefly talked about the situation and don't want to waste my time with him while it was raining and there is leaking under the hall. He said I can't make a report and then asked me to leave. I tell him more details and he said I was changing the story and can't make a report. I asked to speak with someone in the front desk and he asked me to leave very rude. I live in the neighborhood for many years and walked in the police office several times. No one deny my entry like that, it was so rude and disrespectful. I wish they could use the same attitude to the criminals! read more

Lived in Manhattan for over 40 years. In the rare occasions that I've had to deal with 19th. pct., I've been sorely disappointed. Their communication skills need improvement as do their courteousness. Today I've tried to reach them by phone no less then eight (8) times. I've tried every extension and I keep getting the 'same recording.' Is anyone there? What is going on? I worked in East Harlem for over a decade in a public school. Unfortunately we, the staff at the school on occasion called the precinct there. They were ALWAYS COURTEOUS and RESPONSIVE!! But in the neighborhood where I've lived for decades I CAN'T even REACH THEM!! AND there are no shortages of calls from Police Associations asking for donations. At one point I even donated. As I'm writing this I'm still trying to phone them and I'm still getting recording after recording. read more

Yessir, I'm reviewing a police station. They didn't serve me delicious vegetarian food or pour me any wine, but they were efficient and just plain nice in helping me file a report for my stolen wallet yesterday. There are some jobs where it's extra-hard to maintain a pleasant attitude, and I'd imagine this is one on the top of the list. So, unless they prove otherwise in some future experience, 5 stars. read more

This is by far one of the worst precincts in New York City. I've had my car broken in to. Spoke to officers to get them come to the scene and file a report. They never showed up, ignored the phone calls from my number and I never got to file a report. I've seen them harass residents and arrest one to appease local business owners that give them free food. I don't think all cops are bad but some of the officers here are lazy and dishonest. read more

In person, I reported a theft to this precinct. My 4-page typewritten report contained dates, times, locations, the serial number, police report numbers from sister jurisdictions, contact information, and analysis sufficient to commence a promising investigation. The precinct promised not to investigate the crime. The precinct kept its promise. Over the phone, I later reported extremely useful information (the name and phone numbers of the suspect, etc.) related to the crime and other crimes. The precinct refused to take any information over the phone. In person, I brought that information and more (a license plate, etc.) in writing to the precinct. The precinct refuse to investigate the crimes. In an Orwellian twist, one of its excuses for failing to write down a report during this second meeting was that it had already taken down an earlier report, notwithstanding that (1) it had instead *refused* to take down a report in the earlier meeting and (2) regardless of whether any new writing be styled a "new report" or an update to an old report, it is imprudent for a police department to refuse to take relevant *new* information in a crime merely because it already possesses older, less helpful information. This precinct is rude. This precinct evinces overconfidence about New York's criminal code, in light of the fact that its understanding of the statutes is incorrect. There is no lower esteem in which a precinct could be held. read more

On 10-10-19 I, a 65 yrs. old permanently Disabled female, was being Assaulted by a car service driver. He pretended he only spoke Chinese, but during the struggle to free myself from the Attacked he spoke English just fine. While being Assaulted a man passing by gave me his cell phone to call 911, "who listened while I was being Assaulted". The man passing by came to my Rescue, provided assistance better than the cops. I gave the 911 operator my location and "was screaming send someone please"; the gentleman and I waited for 24 minutes, but "no officer ever arrived" (???) so i went on inside the building to my doctor's appointment. The driver left the scene. After reading some of the posts I agree "some" cops should not be allowed to be cops. Some of them to try to uphold the Law and perform in the best interest of Victims, and others just think of how they can benefit from their position. There is "irrefutable proof" that at least NINE judges in the Housing and Civil Courts on Sutphin Blvd. are CORRUPT. Reporting the fact results in you being Blackballed and placed on a "Blacklist" which makes it extremely difficult to find another apartment. The City gains Hundreds of Thousands and maybe Millions from selling the list of names to landlords - Senator Liz Krueger has proven the list exists and asked that it STOP being sold because it causes the Victims Unjustifiable problems. So when City Officials LIES about Funds aren't available to help the less fortunate, simply ask "What is all that money from the list being sold used for". It is claimed the U.S is the land of Freedom and opportunity, but it treats it Citizens worse than stray dogs. I will only respect a cop when he or she has EARNED such. read more

Mother of my child had me arrested after an argument. When they sent me downtown they forced me to leave my iPhone, earphones and charger. When I returned the next day my almost new charger had obviously been swapped for an old ratty one. I brought it up to the front desk and she just shrugged her shoulders. To step on people when they are down is fucking disposable. The NYPD and this precinct in particular is full of scummy shitbags who wouldn't last 2 seconds in the private sector. I photographed an officer this morning in car #4232 pull into a fire hydrant space so he could go into a store to purchase a coffee. I also have a picture of the officer coming out of the store with his coffee. If a public citizen did this the police would be all over us and probably issue a ticket. The worst precinct ever. I went to report suspicious activity by the FDR (I'm a runner) and the officer who I believe his name was Domenico treated me like I was being annoying. Police turned 4 hours after I called 911. My wallet with credit/debit cards & driving license & SSN card was stolen. The cops were very nice. But now (after two days) I have been calling for last two hours to get my report # and nobody picks up any phone number at the precinct. I was told by police cops call & get report # before I visited precinct to get a copy of my report. NOBODY picks up the phone. So I went to the location. I had to wait for 15 minutes, but then I was very politely asked about my problem and taken to a detective. Detective was very polite and meticulously took all the information from me. The 19th precinct serves a densely populated area and its wonderful officers are overworked, stretched. They limit the problems they deal with to the extremely onerous (terrorism, murder) at one end, and the minor (a lost wallet, a noise complaint) at the other. There are problems between these extremes. The most serious ongoing violations in this area of pricey real estate is harassment of rent-stabilized or rent-controlled residents. No action or investigation will be done for even the most serious aggravations, unless it goes to the extreme of say, murder, theft (with sufficient evidence), etc. But a large percent of people in this district suffer daily with threats, intimidation, harm to pets, and ongoing deficiencies that make life difficult. The police insist these are "civil matters" even when that is questionable: i.e., an attack with obvious evidence (bricks and other objects thrown, etc.) but no black-and-blue marks; harassers employed to slander and track the movements of the victim, etc. Usually, people of limited means, or the disabled or elderly, wouldn't have the ability - or financial resources - to fight powerful organizations behind such methods. Civil courts want more evidence than a person can provide without police help. The police need to add these violations to the work they do. Or a new police agency needs to be established to investigate these crimes. Addressing the issues would make the city more enjoyable for all. What, dear reader, did you say you are not sympathetic with the rent-stabilized? There has been a PR effort to mis-portray these as wealthy people cheating the system. Don't believe it. Overwhelmingly, these are elderly or disabled people. The city long ago agreed to allow rent-stabilized buildings to be cooped or condoed without first deciding what to do with rent stabilization. The city thereby left rent stabilized people to be harassed by investors desiring to profit and little reason to be kind or obey the (unenforced) laws that (fail to) protect. Rental buildings obey the law, so do many coops; but in many, many coops people are suffering. Wake up 19th Precinct, or someone in charge in NYPD. Please. read more

i disagree and agree with the caller about no one picks up the phone. yesterday, i called about a friend with a life critical situation and someone picked up the phone and said they would send the police. today, i called to find out what happened and called twice with no one answering the phone. i called a 3rd time and finally spoke to the detective section who then connected me to the "desk" . very bad response system. read more

Wow, I have always been a big supporter of the police but all I needed was one visit to the 19th Precinct to change my mind. When I got to the front desk, I was initially treated well, but when the officer came over to take my report you might as well have thought I was the criminal. I now understand why crime statistics are so low. They make a concerted effort to intimidate you and make you feel as if what you are reporting is not important enough for their time. The officer actually said "What, so you want me to fill out a report?". Uh, Yes, that's why I came down there, after all. I had a statement already written up for him and he moved it aside and actually said "I don't have time to look at this" After years of vocally supporting the police I can now see clearly why they are so disliked. In the end it took him a total of 5 minutes to file the report, but in that whole 15 minutes of his poor behavior he changed my opinion of the whole police force forever.
