Bronx Family Court has been one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. The system is disorganized, poorly supervised, and consistently understaffed. After years of litigation, multiple judge changes, and repeated exposure to ongoing abuse dynamics, I have experienced a level of instability and lack of accountability that no parent should ever have to endure. Instead of creating safety and structure, this court process has often felt enabling and retraumatizing. I came to the court seeking protection and support, but the lack of enforcement and meaningful intervention has allowed harmful dynamics to continue. It has been emotionally exhausting, financially draining, and deeply discouraging. Recommend? Well, if you are a criminal or a menace to society I highly recommend you barge in her and act like the idiot you truly are. It's a courthouse. If you need to go here, you go here. Just make sure you dress like you're flying out of JFK; no belt, empty pockets, leave your weapons (nail file, nail clippers, etc) at home and if you are a bracelet freak like me, leave all 32 of your jingly jangles in your bag or just be prepared to remove them. Unlike TSA, these guys are NYPD and a lot friendlier (at least to me). Anyway, if ya gotta come to the courthouse, come to the courthouse, but it not a destination. NOTE: if you are showing up for jury duty and need to report to room 212, bring a book, a tablet, a battery pack and something inconspicuous to snack on (cuz no eating) and sit at the front because at some point you will be asked to line up to turn in part of your summons. read more

A movie is being filmed somewhere in the area and there are tons of trucks (what Americans call lorries) parked out front the court house and continuing for many blocks. 4:15pm and a bit of Friday traffic passing by. The Epitome of Justice. Part A court dates: Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A large building that sits nearby the famous Yankee Stadium one block away. Expedite security when displaying any NYC agency identification card can bypass the long line but all are subject to the standard X-Ray machines, belts removed from pants, but not as problematic or hassle as airport style security (shoes removed, finger prints, scanning the eye, taking photos). Bronx County Courthouse is mainly for civil law cases (family court, housing court and jury duty). My suggestions: * Be prepared to wait and wait an eternity for your name to be called in any form of law (family court, housing court and jury duty). Clear your morning or afternoon schedules. * Bring a sweater as the a/c maybe blasting in the hot summer months or insufficient heat in winter months can be chilly * Power of observation for whom is in the court room (judge, court officers, county clerks (yes, there are more than one county clerk), court admission clerks to prepare the folder to be presented to the judge, language interpreter all to segue the legal proceedings * Allow extra time to situate your assigned courtroom, floor, index number, calendar number, locating the building takes time, slow elevators and long security lines will stress you out and blockage your destination * Have a positive and open mindset of the law. It is easier to get through the process with an understanding. Negative feeds on negativity. * No loud chattering inside courtrooms as you will be evicted by court officers-- take your cell phone and in-person conversations in the corridor and put your cell phone on vibrate or silent * Local convenience stores and some cafes are in the vicinity powered by courthouse officials, attorneys, and avid baseball patrons available for lunch * Bronx County Courthouse may be closed for lunch 1 pm to 2 pm, Mondays to Fridays The stone facade is architecturally beautiful to withhold the judicial system and equality for all. I called today for direction on a summons I received and the woman that I spoke with was disgusting. Extremely rude, argumentative, demeaning and dismissive, she actually hung up the phone after I asked her name because she was well aware of how horribly she handled the call . My inquiry was not answered and imagine I'll bare the repercussions when I made the effort to resolve and their employees were vile and useless. read more

I dread taking the subway sometimes. Often I see the NYPD stopping random people for a bag search and I vehemently feel apprehensive because I know I'm going to be selected for this unwanted lottery. I automatically feel guilty as my NorthFace backpack is full with school books, gym clothes and lunch (some dinner leftovers over a few nights, mixed into a pig's trough and prepared in Tupperware). I plan on making smalltalk with the officer, asking about career paths and exciting job design. Bomb or not, I am always guilty. I get stopped every time but I am used to it. Jury duty automatically conjures illicit feelings of indignation. Why me? How dare they? Don't "they" know: a) I have an important job! b) I have better things to do - Maury is on! c) I bought tickets to Spamalot! d) some other bullsh-t complaint you can think of. There are several courthouses in the Bronx. Today the New York State Supreme Court of Bronx County handles civil cases only (there is a new building for criminal proceedings). It is located at Grand Concourse and 161st St. This past June, I served jury duty for the 3rd time, serving two days this week in the Boogie D. Near Yankee Stadium, I was jealous of the folks who went to the day game on Monday. It ruined my plans for grabbing a beer at lunch. Upon arrival, you have to empty your pockets and walk through metal detectors. Not as bad as the TSA, since you get to keep your shoes on and you can bring in beverages. Cameras and recording devices are not allowed, but cell phones with cameras are ok; don't be smart and take pictures, even if you see hot chicks. Within the juror selection room, aka room 212, you sit and hear the general orientation spiel and watch a video. If you are not called, then guess what, you will be playing the "waiting game" as your jury duty service. The "smoking room" which I enjoyed in 2001 is now a computer room, with about 40+ decrepit Dell laptops. Strangely only 5 of them operate with internet access. The bathroom stalls have the one-ply sandpaper-like toilet paper. There is one mirror and the sinks have those rusty faucets that require one hand to get the water out. In terms of jury duty advice, here goes: * As far as appearance, a t-shirt and jeans work. I did see "no shorts" explicitly on the juror summons. * Bring a book or a video game system or something that will keep you busy for at least 5 hours a day. You'll thank me later. * For lunch possibilities, anything on the strip ie, pizza, McDonalds, and Burger King are poor choices. It's up to the type of case and lawyers. Do lawyers want folks to be sympathetic and get the best possibly jury to decide in their favor? I think so. In three stints I've been in voir dire only four times and have been excused. I went undrafted like Priest Holmes. Most of my experience here involved sitting on my hands, reading and playing a little Nintendo DS. One of my fond experiences was taking a break, going to the TV room and watching Maury. In a peanut gallery of 3 elderly women, I overheard lovely conversations discussing the good old days when "there was no remote control. Children were the remotes and changed the channel." In addition, I sat in horror as these oldies discussed their aspirations of being strippers and dominatrices (thanks to Mr Springer's televised circus). Double barf, but it was memorable. Each time I walk through the metal detectors, I think aloud: a) Who is going commando today? b) How many people here have nothing better to do? c) The five losers hogging up the laptops can't be on myspace all day, can they? d) I imagine that this is the closest I will get to experiencing prison. e) I wish I was at work. f) The dude who picked 'e' is under the influence. It's much easier to get here than I thought it was. Staff is friendly & it definitely has the feel of an older courthouse i.e. there's history here. Grand entrance, easy to navigate check in process and a little less intimidating than some of the other courthouses. Lots of people I know have familiarity with this court and are regulars as attorneys with cases here. read more

I have been here for school competitions and all the experiences have been positive. The security is tight and everything is well maintained. The courthouse is beautiful from the outside and the inner hall is quite a sight. Great for photos. The issue is parking. Finding a spot on the street is very difficult. Being a block away from Yankee Stadium makes it even harder to park. read more

This review is for the clerks office. I went to have my son's passport processed. I went on a Tuesday with all the paperwork. Short redhead Spanish lady with glasses asks me where my son was at, I gave her the look of ,"what for" she tells me that he had to be present. Ok, well I wasn't aware. She then takes the paperwork, staples some papers together, folds them and tells me to come back with my son and the check for the processing fee of $25 and a copy of my state state ID front & back. . I go back on Thursday of the same week,, I left work early and picked up my son early from school so I wouldn't miss the closing time. Same short redhead. Doesn't greet me at all, has a skank face and takes my paperwork and begins going on rampage. "Why are your papers folded"?, I was here 2 days ago, you folded them. "No I didn't". Ok, ma'am you actually did, you took my paperwork, stapled itm folded it and told me to come back with my son. "I absolutely did not. Now I won't be able to scan them. I would never do that.(rolls eyes) Ok, you did but I am not going to continue to debate about that. And you need to relax, and change that tone because I am not the one. "Where's your social security card"? Why? "Because this is not a driver's license". I know, it's a state ID which you told me to copy and bring in."No I didn't, you need a driver's license and if you don't have one you need your SS along with an ID". Ummm ok you didn't say that, but ok I actually have my SS and will make a copy right now. Anything else? "Where's your $25 processing fee money order"? I have my checkbook or cash. "No, we don't take none of that. It states it on our wall". Yes, it states right here that you accept checks and cash. "No we don't that's for another window" (lol she's really this ridiculous and continues with her nasty attitude) Ok, ma'am your attitude is out of hand. Your bad day is yours not mines. I then went back outside to purchase a money order. I return and this time went to the Indian lady. I hand her my paperwork. She processes it, not once asked for my son. Meanwhile the angry gremlin is at the next window being bitchy with a mom and daughter. What an experience. That lady was completely unprofessional and obnoxious, I get it we all have bad days, especially when you're a government employee pushing paper all day long. But it is not the customer's fault and your crap shouldn't be projected onto others. I am just glad that I remained calm. read more
