If you need to go here, you go here. Just make sure you dress like you're flying out of JFK; no belt, empty pockets, leave your weapons (nail file, nail clippers, etc) at home and if you are a bracelet freak like me, leave all 32 of your jingly jangles in your bag or just be prepared to remove them. Unlike TSA, these guys are NYPD and a lot friendlier (at least to me). Anyway, if ya gotta come to the courthouse, come to the courthouse, but it not a destination. NOTE: if you are showing up for jury duty and need to report to room 212, bring a book, a tablet, a battery pack and something inconspicuous to snack on (cuz no eating) and sit at the front because at some point you will be asked to line up to turn in part of your summons.

The line to be checked in was concert long. Once they checked our bags we were asked to walk through a metal dector, collect our belongings, and have a seat in the processing room. While you're waiting to be called you're given specific instructions that you must follow. You go over the jury summons and fill it out accordingly, then you are asked to call your employer if you're unsure if you'll be paid by your job while serving as a grand juror. Once you are called up you are asked whether you have anything that'll prevent you from serving jury duty. Oh I forgot the most important thing, serving as a grand juror for grand jury duty is a minimum of 20 DAYS. That's right an entire month not including weekends. My employer and I overlooked that part and thought the jury summons was for a trial jury duty where I'd be asked questions and then dismissed based on my responses. I thought my life had ended when we were told the amount of time we'll be serving. Little did I know that serving my 20 day bid would change my life for the better. My group of jurors were funny, witty, and cool. Officer Brenda was assigned to our group and she is one of the coolest officers I know. She was so down to earth, hilarious, and over all just had a positive aura. I'm going to miss everyone it was like a family. We laughed, cried, and made fun of each other. It's funny how complete strangers can become extended family. Serving helped me to see things in a different light. I believe that I don't take life or things for granted and serving reinforced that. Some days we barely had any questions and other days we had back to back cases. Some were pointless and some were extremely hard to stomach and listen to.

Grand Jury Duty is different from Trail Jury Duty and it seems to be virtually no way to escape it if you're called, unless you have a felony conviction on your record. No judgement here just giving you a heads up. So be prepared to forfeit 4 weeks of your regular routine for a new one 4 days a week. If I'm honest I was kick'n & screaming like many of us do, when we are called to serve but it wasn't exactly that bad. I mean it can be boring as heck with all the down time. It is like watching paint dry or plucking every hair on your body one by one. Alright, that may be a little extreme but be prepared nonetheless. I used the opportunity to catch up on some much needed reading to help stimulate some brain cells. For the 4 wks you are required to report @ 9am and stay to the close of business which doesn't necessarily mean 5pm. It is until you are dismissed which means it could be before 5 or some times after. You are required to go thru security every time you enter the building and as a Juror you are allowed to enter with food and beverages. If you are serving as a Grand Juror you have access to a refrigerator and microwave. Security moves pretty quickly with the exception of Mondays & Wednesdays when the line can be out the door so arrive early. Everyone including the Court Officers are generally polite and actually nice. When it finally comes to an end you realize it is not actually that bad and you provided some input in our Judicial system. Just A Note: They provide $7 parking vouchers to park at the shopping center across the street which reduces the cost from $25 to $18. My suggestion is 4 days a week for 4 weeks, $18 adds up so only drive if necessary.

Today was my day at the Bergen County Courthouse located in Hackensack, where I was able to see its interior beauty. Designed by architect James Reilly Gordon ca. 1911, this courthouse is a fine example of the Beaux Arts style, reflecting monuments of classical Rome and the Italian Renaissance. The building is capped by a copper-coated dome with a cupola and surmounted by a statue. The interior dome of the rotunda area of the courthouse is modeled after the Pantheon in Rome and topped with Tiffany-stained glass. Since this building is rich with history, if you get a chance to be inside, go to the 2nd floor and follow the sign to the rotunda.

Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building, Louis J. Lefkowitz State Office Building, US Court of International Trade, Jacob K. Javits Federal Building and Surrogate's Court of New York County. The Supreme Court building is just like you may have seen on TV or in movies*, tall Corinthian columns with a short flight of stairs leading up to the front entrance. Architect Guy Lowell won the contest for design on the building in 1913, its exterior modeled after a Roman temple, and work started 1919, with initial intent to be a circular building. Due to WWI, the plans downsized to a smaller hexagonal structure with a rotunda, and completed in 1927. The court is open to the public 9am-5pm when there are cases proceeding and you are able to sit in, though I have not personally done this before. A security scan/metal detector is required when entering the building. Free tours are available to those interested in learning more about the judicial system, more info available here: https://ww2.nycourts.gov/courts/1jd/supctmanh/Court_tours2.shtml A main point of interest inside is the circular wall mural "Law Through the Ages" in the rotunda, designed by Italian artist Attilio Pusterla and painted between 1934 and 1936. It's divided into six sections depicting pairs of historical figures important to the history of Western law: Assyrian / Egyptian, Hebraic / Persian, Greek / Roman, Byzantine / Frankish, English / early colonial, with the final section portraying George Washington / Abraham Lincoln. Above the seated figures are portraits of six lawgivers: Hammurabi, Moses, Solon, Justinian, Blackstone and John Marshall. *These include most famously: - Miracle on 34th Street (1947) - 12 Angry Men (1957) - The Godfather (1972) - Goodfellas (1990) - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - Night Court, television series - Law & Order and its many spinoffs - Cagney & Lacey - Damages - Blue Bloods - Suits, television series

God help you if you're appearing as a per diem attorney & you have never been here. First off, it's not the easiest building to find. It's BEHIND the Citibank building. Second, finding the ladies room is a pain in the behind. The court security was friendly enough but to find the courtroom you have to be at, you have to actually go to the clerk's office. They don't post a board or have their security person instantly ask you where you're going as it is in other courthouses I've been to. I felt like I was entering some small town courthouse; it definitely has that feel to it. Then at the proceeding I was at, the judge's interns wanted us to do something that neither party was interested in and that as a per diem attorney, came out of left field. We also could have had our matter resolved before the calling of lunch but it wasn't & I had a prior engagement to deal with. That was extremely annoying. Also, is there actually ANYTHING in the way of good food to eat around here? Where would the attorneys going here often hang out for lunch? My ex worked in this area at one time & I remember that being an issue for him.
