They NEVER answer their phones. God forbid you call twice in a row, then they really NEVER pick up and flag you so that you are on permanent ignore. They forget there is always the City Manager's Office and the office of the Mayor. Oh, and there are also City Council Meetings open to the public as well as weekly Community meetings on Tuesdays. After having left my cell phone in a cab last night, I was pretty sure I'd never see it again. Luckily, the cab driver was an ANGEL and turned it in at the 17th Precinct for me. Officer Veras had the foresight to send my Dad a text message about where I could pick up my phone at 4:00 am. Today I went to retrieve my phone and was asked to provide my phone's serial number and sim card number, and after a short negotiation of how to get that information from the AT&T website, I told them the battery was still charged, and they allowed me to call my phone from their phone and answer questions about the background of my phone and the most recent text messages that were sent on it. I now have my phone back AND the contact information for the cab driver who turned it in so that I can send him a thank you card and some money. There are still honest people in New York! I left some stuff in a yellow cab last night and was advised to call this precinct to see if anyone had turned it in. I have called a dozen times throughout the day starting around 10am and most recently at 6:30. No one has even answered the phone! On one of my calls someone did briefly pick up and put me on hold, but then no one ever picked up after that. Every other time I've called, it just rings forever and eventually tells me no one is available. How is that even possible?? Very frustrating to deal with such poor service when all I want to know is if they have my stuff. read more

My already low opinion of the NYPD has sunk even lower after having to visit this place. Had to file a police report for my bicycle that had been stolen, while I was there I witnessed a man come in with some woman's lost purse that they wanted to turn in. Beyond all belief, the fine officers of the 17th Precinct REFUSED to take the purse, and made the man leave! Conveniently, after calling to follow up about my stolen item report, the fine precinct had lost all record of having filed any report. They also don't answer their phone, and if they do hang up on you when they realize you want them to actually do work. read more

Don't know if anyone has ever yelped a particular police precinct, and hopefully none of you will ever have to. And if you do, let it not be in the 17th precinct where you fall victim to a crime. After being pick-pocketed this week (I swore that would NEVER happen to me, but guess I was distracted enough and also shielded the dirty thief with the big ole shopping bag I was carrying), I went to file a police report as I was fairly certain that it happened while I was standing on the southbound E platform at 53rd and Lex. Seriously, why bother with this step? If it hadn't been for the fact that EVERYTHING was in my checkbook wallet, including my checks, id (both work and license), credit cards, ATM card, gift cards...etc., and I am now afraid of identity theft, I wouldn't have bothered. All I got for it was a long wait, served with an extra helping of attitude, a raised "talk to the hand" gesture when the woman taking my statement had heard enough, an INACCURATE written statement (maybe she should have listened - West 4th bitch not W44th!!) that bounced to another precinct because they claimed to not have jurisdiction because I "discovered" it when I got off the train downtown; over 13 follow-up calls from different officers asking me the same questions (including a 6:15am call when my complaint was transferred back up to the 17th), and a surly reminder that next time I should make sure to close my purse and be more cautious. Thanks, because otherwise I walk around asking low lives to rob me. Now two precincts are volleying my complaint (discovery v. where I believed it occurred)...Pfffttt...what a waste of time and resources... read more

Police officers that refuse to allow a victim to file a report! Got harrsssed by a taxi driver to the point he was yelling at me and locked me into the taxi and kept on driving past my destination. Called 911 and the 17th precinct sent officer Arenas (badge 5916) to the location. He repeated multiple times that I should call the NYC TLC and he would not let me press charges against the driver since according to him "no crime, felony or misdemeanor" had been committed. He even gave an example that I wasn't raped or assaulted. Did not realize that a woman would have to have physical proof of being harassed or assaulted even when scared out of her wits for the police to let her file charges. In the mean time this unstable taxi driver keeps on driving around NYC and law abiding tax-payers like myself spend the night at home shaken and traumatized. read more

I dont think they know what is written on their cars . CPR (courtesy, professionalism, respect). I thought nowadays agents were nice people. I guess i was wrong, especially at precinct 17th. Attidude, rude, arrogance. Way to go guys. I live in this precinct and am not surprised by some of the negative comments. I find them particularly ineffective when it comes to community affairs. This is a midtown neighborhood with a lot happening, especially protests and the like due to presence of UN and many diplomatic missions. Not to mention street fairs, etc. The 17th precinct is very scattershot and slow when it comes to notifying residents of upcoming events that may result in inconvenience and annoyance, like closed streets and lots of noise. Furthermore, when these events happen, officers on the street generally know nothing about what is going on, when it's going to end, alternate routes of travel & bus routes, etc. My street is closed during UN General Assembly opening meetings for about a week each fall. The official notice from the 17th usually comes only a day or two before the closing (we get info from other sources way before that). They give advance notice of some events (Nigerian national day celebration, that has local residents fleeing), but not others (ongoing noisy anti-Egypt demonstrations, street fairs, etc.) Today we had warning of Nigeria day events (albeit only one day's notice) so were looking forward to spending some quiet time at home after that, but unknown to us police had granted a permit for another ear-splitting anti-Egypt demonstration directly following Nigeria parade (at corner of 44th and Second), so had to leave home again. Community Affairs officer sounds like a cushy job to me. And keep in mind for every $100k in salary NYPD offficers get, I am told the city pays another $105k for benefits. Plus they get overtime for just about everything, and that counts in their defined benefit pension calculation. For money like that, don't we have a right to expect a bit more? read more

I'm not sure what they do in this precinct. They don't answer phones, that's for sure. I was the victim of a job training scam, and it seems like it would be easier to track down the perpetrators myself than to find one cop at the 17th Precinct willing to even talk to me. The only time I talked to a human being there, over the phone, it was the operator, who hung up on me seemingly accidentally, and when I called back and got her a second time and asked why she hung up, she slammed the phone down and the line was never answered again. I guess if you are a billionaire or a diplomat they might treat you a little better. Interesting the only positive reviews here are tourists or former employees. If you are a New Yorker of ordinary means, these cops do not work for you. It's just a gang that steals your tax dollars and then laughs at you when you need their help. read more

Such an embarrassment to say i live in New York City. I left my cell phone in a cab and tried calling this precinct. No exaggerating at all. I called for an hour straight. No one answers at all. I tried every extension at least 5 to 6 times and after repeated ringing they just abruptly hang up on you. Not once did i have a chance to speak to anyone at this precinct. This is just an embarrassment. Am i to believe that the precinct is closed for the day, impossible. Every single department i called, not one answer. I am only trying this review now because the last 5 times i called all of a sudden there is a busy signal. Which leads me to believe someone was tired of hearing the phone ring and instead of answering it, which i am sure is apart of their job they just leave the phone off the hook so they can get back to not working or whatever it is that is preventing them from taking my call. Just got back from the police station after trying to file a police report for my stolen iphone. I waited an hour to file the report because the woman in charge of police reports was informed by her co-worker that she would have to do some work and instead opted to go get a bag of bagels (this collusion happened right in front of my eyes, so they either really don't care what I think or they consider me extremely ignorant). After waiting, they refused to let me file it as stolen property. I had to fill out an entirely new police report to file the item as lost. I wanted to hold onto the original police report for my records to show my intent to file it as stolen, but the woman told me that was a crime and that I was "stealing police property" and would be "locked up" if I didn't give the original report back. The woman immediately ripped up the paper in front of me. She went on to inform her co-workers and anyone in earshot that her 15 year old son had more sense than "this idiot" (referring to me). After being harassed and threatened by these two women who work at the 17th precinct (not officers, mind you), they "allowed me" to file the report as lost. I can't believe this just happened. But the reality is it takes far too much time money and effort, when all you have to do is connect the two parties at hand, the owner and the finder. Very disappointed in this precinct. I left a very important article of property in a taxi last night. I was frantic looking for it. I called the precinct and was informed that no property whad been returned for days. The representative seemed helpful over the phone. What a lie. I search online for the driver via his medallion number and was able to locate his place of employment. I was SO lucky to run into him before he left for his shift!! He appeared relieved to see me. The driver stated that he went to the 17th TWICE and was turned away both times!!! The "helpful" person claimed to be too busy. He planned to drive around to all of the precincts until someone would log my item. I will forever be grateful for this driver. TLC workers are indolent as well. The driver also stated that TLC can certainly track ALL taxis - whether privately owned or commissioned by the state. Here's a tip: ALWAYS ask for a receipt from the taxi driver. And, if you loose something, do some detective work online to attempt to contact the driver yourself. Don't rely on the people who are PAID to assist us. read more

from what i have heard on the street and nypd message boards, nypd will do everything in its power to not submit a pickpocket report in its preceint. crime stat , it looks bad on the commanders report and it id much easier to report in as lost property, which is not a reputable crime stat crime. it means you were inattentive or drunk and lost it, So this si the typical pickpocket nypd either refusal to take a report or as in your case change the address to someplace out of the preceint., so it it so much of a hassle and so many hours of your time spent, with obligatory follow ups that you just give up. That is what hey want you to do , remember crime-stat=promotions The real news would be a properly filled pickpocket report for that preceint, with a trackable number so that in a week if you call up with the number , the report actually exist and you can get a copy and compare it to the original. this way you will see if any nypd shenanigans have occurred, such as the infamous "lost property" that they fill in when you leave the house. it is also proper procedure to forward the claim not the claimant. if the public is going o get proper nypd courtesy a secondary reporting procedure needs to be established for checks and balances, cops hate that. dont give up always give these improper police conduct to wnyc and ask them about setting up a secondary tracking system for a crime-stat crimes. i have heard from the victim where the police used the same tactics oi not record a theft on the east side bike path in a high price UES neighborhood. Fight back, pickpockets do happen, grand central station, Bryant park are some hot spots. read more
