Social Security Administration has my FIVE BIG STARS. If I didn't pay into Social Security all my working years I wouldn't be able to live here in Manhattan! What I paid from my paycheck is a fraction of what I have gained in income since I was eligible to receive Social Security Benefits. Social Security has really tightened up the online website. If you are not tech savvy I feel sorry for you. I've learned a lot about my benefits and get my annual income statement. I definitely pay taxes on my Social Security you know! My sister, who lives in Queens, NY had a terrible experience with SSA yesterday 10/17/23 with a customer service representative on the telephone. She was trying to get information on how she could receive information regarding adding Part B to her husband's Medicare insurance. He was disrespectful, unhelpful and impatient with her as she was trying to tell her husband to answer the questions so that she would be able to speak with the representative on his behalf. The SSA should not have anyone who is behaving in this manner or is not happy doing their job, especially in customer service. read more

I walked in to update my information. Upon arrival you'll take a ticket via a machine and then wait for your number to be called. The place was extremely clean, comfortable and I was in and out within 30mins at 3pm on a Friday. The lady at Counter #14 greeted me with a smile and was both helpful and patient. I had the best experience and if only all civil servants were like her, the world would definitely be a better place! read more

The experience wasn't good. I submitted a SSA1724 form back in April of 2024. The representative that assisted me did not go over whether or not I qualified for a payment or not. Once I didn't hear anything by mail from Social Security I called them a few times. Once you call you are on hold for long periods of time which is ridiculous. Although it was confirmed the document was received still no one informed me that I didn't qualify. Finally in December of 2024 I spoke to another representative who finally went over the criteria for the payment and it was discovered that I didn't qualify. So basically I wasted my time waiting to receive a payment that I was never going to get which is crazy to me. read more

I was very very pleasantly surprised by my experience here! I am recently married and needed to change my name, and I decided to walk in after seeing that the next available appointment was about a month away. I thought it was going to be like the DMV where I would take a ticket and be waiting for hours (I even brought a book to kill time)-- but I was taken basically immediately! I had pre-filled out all my paperwork, so my time at the window took me a total of 8 minutes start to finish. The man that helped me was super nice. The extremely lengthy wait for a senior citizen to speak with someone to help get data about their benefits, is horrible. it takes hours. I saw someone waited for over 3 hours. That's shameful. These senior citizens do not know how to use a computer or smartphone. Just hire more staff or find ways to streamline the process. read more

Few things to start: 1. They open at 7am - Google & MAPs have it wrong 2. They don't take appointments so you need to commit to coming & waiting 3. You can do a lot of things completely online so check to make sure you NEED to come to an office I arrived ~8am and waited maybe 30 min. I needed to update my information on my card so it required a physical appointment. The building is beautiful & is run well. The process was clear & everyone gave clear directions throughout. I had a really smooth experience and am pleasantly surprised with how simple it was. Highly recommend this location for any social security card needs! read more

I just want to bring to the attention to whom it may concern I was at the Social Security office at 123 Williams St. On July 3. Which is the Social Security office in Manhattan one of many, that I had been to on the same day. but I have to say that this one stand out to me the most the representative that helped me. His name was Mr. TEIXEIRA, whom I have to say was extremely patient. Great customer service skills and really understanding. He did not know that I was a disabled veteran with a liver and kidney transplant and was very weak on this day from running around with my dad. In which I care for now. All he knew was that I was a daughter caring for her father. With this being said, I do believe that Mr. TEIXEIRA should be recognized for his impeccable customer service. Helpful security guard who told me where to go and fill out the application, and after getting my number it was only a few minutes before I was called to one of the representatives to take care of it. In the past, if you phoned 1-800-772-1213, you had to listen to a laid back man's voice app asking you many questions irrelevant to the reason for your call. As of today when I called, the voice has changed, and only one question was asked of me: "Do you want to speak to an agent?" I did, and, by calling after 5pm, I was in queue with many others. An agent didn't respond until after 6pm. Her name is Kim, and she is the new, friendlier face of the Social Security Administration. I asked her if she was working overtime, and she said her shift doesn't begin until 4pm. In the past, living on the West Coast, the federal phones were only open from 8am till 5. I explained that I had to change my Direct Deposit, but had been unable to contact my local office. She explained that a fraud block had been placed on my account. I told her I was having surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2 days, and that Banner Bank had closed my existing account without warning me, and they had kept the money in the account. I had opened a new account at a credit union, and if I didn't survive the surgery, I wanted my check to be available to my husband. Kim went to my local SSA branch's website, and she told them what was happening to me, gave them the information for the new credit union, and she did it all with a smile in her voice. I believe she went above and beyond her call of duty, but maybe the SSA is now hiring people with pleasant personalities. She was the nicest, most informative and helpful agent with whom I have spoken in 40 years of dealing with the Administration. I told her I was so impressed by her performance that I was going to Yelp her, but I didn't realize I needed her location so she could look up what I have written about her. If you need to call the federal number for assistance, and if you have the pleasure of speaking with someone as nice and well-trained as Kim, give them credit for it. If Kim is the only one of her kind, at least the SSA has made a step in the right direction. Being nice never hurts, and I am sure all agents for the SSA encounter unhappy clients. Usually, it isn't the agents who have caused the stressful problem that has caused you to call them. If you don't have to, don't worsen their day, as well. This office over books appointments given to Social Security applicants. My husband had a 3:00 appointment booked over 3 week's ago. He called the office at about 3:45 and was put on hold for 10 minutes to have an employee pick the phone and say they close in 2 minutes. He explained to her that he had an appointment at 3:00 PM and no one had called him . She goes into their system and finds out who was the representative who was going to call him at 3:00 and says she may call you back. At 4:30 the employee calls and says he has to reschedule the appointment and that the only thing she could do for him was try to call him the next day at 8:00 Am as a courtesy,(hahaha) . My husband said he couldn't wait for her to call the next day because he had an appointment at 8:00 that he couldn't miss for a CT scan . She then says well you have to call back and speak to a supervisor meanwhile no apologies for making him wait and going crazy looking for numbers to call because on the appointment letter there isn't a phone number to reach the office at 302 West 126 Street . I then ask her why do you guys schedule an appointment with people and then don't even call them to say they are behind schedule??? Her quick response was I don't control how long we stay with people who come into the office . They could come in at 10:00 Am and be done 2 to 3 hours later . Unbelievable, the amount of people that work in that office this shouldn't be happening and this is not the first time this happens to my husband at this location. I have a video recording of the employee who was very rude and unprofessional and when questioned she rudely hung up the phone, now this is a federal job who employees are always going to training and it seems to me like the training is going out the door . These people think that because they are the ones behind the desk they think they can intimidate people . We will not be going into that Social Security office at 302 West 126 Street and will be calling other locations for assistance. I know that my sick husband doesn't need to be dealing with nonsense, and especially from employees that are rude and unprofessional. They were incredibly efficient, especially considering how many people come in everyday to get their SS stuff squared away. Sad this office does not respect the people it is supposed to serve. I attempted to help an american citizen who arrived in NYC with a US passport and who had lived abroad since he was an infant. The poor fellow arrived in this country after being told he needed to come to the US to get a social security card in order work in the USA. Well, to make a long story short they kept him on the phone for over 15 hours looping him around pressing numbers on the phone... And when someone would answer they would ask him to hold and then hang up. This poor fellow came with his US passport and birth certificate to NYC. What a cruel and horrific game this office plays! To make matters worse the fellow had run out of money and could not begin work without a social security number. So at the end he had to basically start begging and sleeping in the street and that is where I met him, a highly educated American with a university degree reduced to begging because of the bureaucratic madness and utmost disrespect of Americans reigning in 123 William St. Eventually after establishing that the fellow was indeed speaking the truth I decided to take him into to my apartment and offered him the livingroom couch. He is still after 2 weeks attempting to get an appointment to see an agent and without success. Shame on America! read more

I have to agree with the other Yelpers. Suprisingly simple and pleasant for a government office. Very happy with my experience here. Came here to change the name on my SS card and request a new one. I got in at about 8:30am - didn't want to chance it at a later time. Took a number and was called up in less than 5 minutes. The lady was very pleasant. I was out of there in less than 10-15 minutes. There is a bathroom in the office as well, clean and spacious. Not sure if it gets busier during a later time - possibly. If you can, go earlier to not risk it. I had to change my name after marriage but was dreading it bc my original SS card had my name misspelled. And these types of offices always have long lines etc. But the reviews said it was actually never too packed. I went in peak afternoon and literally only had an hour to get it done. They were amazing. Super organised! They had guys at the entrance guiding ppl on what forms and documents they needed and exactly how to have a seat to make sure everyone was in line in order. I got everything done in an hour even though I went in at the most packed time. Plus everyone was nice! That almost never happens. The woman I got especially really worked with me. When a Government service office can efficiently get you in and out their office with a pleasant smile in the morning, they deserve 5-stars! First, the office is open at 7am for the early birds. I was aiming for 7:30 but didn't arrive until 8am [sigh]. I was prepared for a crazed waiting room but there were only 25 people in queue. The helpful security guards directed me to to print my waiting ticket at the touch screen kiosk and fill out the application and the waiting game began. The waiting room is clean and quiet. Conversations were at a minimum as it was relatively early. Note: Cell phones are not permitted at the window (how disrespectful that would be); nor pics as I attempted to take one of the waiting room and was lightly reprimanded (didn't know that tidbit). Within thirty minutes, I was serviced and out the door. TIP: It's beneficial to have ALL your paperwork filled out in advance and required documents at hand. Kudos to me. Now if only the US Postal system could work this effortlessly..... read more

They actually looked like they weren't miserable with existence, and wouldn't be brusque with any visitor, however hopeless and bumbling lol. I was dreading going because I avoid spending any time in any governmental building in the city but the process was super easy and everyone was very clear and helpful. I made sure to have my application filled out beforehand and all my IDs were ready to go - I was in and out in less than 20 minutes. It was honestly amazing. NEVER in a million years did I ever think I would write a review like this about a governmental agency! I went this AM to get a replacement Social Security Card. I completed the paperwork found on line, brought my ID with me. I went to the 3rd floor. I sat down. Within NINE (9)....YES....9 minutes I was out. Omar was the clerk who helped me. Super kind, very personable and totally competent. Let me ask you this, why can't all agencies operate in the manner? I am so tired of waiting and waiting in lines. No explanations. People in line who are telling their life's stories, etc. This was a miracle if I ever saw one. A lot of people were processed in very little time. My only suggestion is that those who are standing guard by the door should be a little more helpful in making sure that people who come in complete the needed forms as this can cause a bit of a back log. Major shout out to the crew on the 3rd floor of 123 William street. They keep it moving. Thanks to them, you can actually get stuff done here. Its not a nightmare. It doesn't take all day just to replace a lost card to change a name. I'm not saying its a joy to go there. Its not perfect. It can be really hard to hear in there - especially the personnel on the other side of the bullet proof glass. The sign-in kiosks were so slow to respond I thought they were broken. The screen that tells you which window to go to was mostly wrong. The security personnel can give too much or too little information. My advice - just roll with it and know that progress will be made. I'm giving 5 stars because I know how hard it can be to work in a gov't bldg - and how bad it can all go wrong. The 123 William Street Social Security office is a million times better than the angry horror show at their Jamaica office. (Seriously - WHAT IS WRONG with those people?) read more

WOW THAT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!!!! I never thought going to the social security office to fix a missing middle initial on my SS card would be so easy and painless! Upon entering a nice, clean and friendly building we were seen within a whole 2 minutes! I had a very warm and friendly gentleman help me and my wife had a sweet and friendly lady (to assist with after marriage name change). The process was painless and took an entire 5 minutes!!! The staff are all really so friendly, calm and nice. They really deserve recognition on what an amazing job they do. They don't rush you etc. So great! NOTE: We got here at 745 am so, I don't know how it is later on in the am/afternoon. SO glad we did not go to the Jamaica location.
